An Oar and Another Sign

I’m still cranking things out for Lucketts over here.  I just got my new tags made to start pricing everything (yay!) and I shopped today for some “fillers” (greenery, eggs, fruit, etc) to make my stuff look even prettier.  I’m seriously getting giddy at how everything is coming together in my head.  Man, I haven’t even shown you any of the furniture and larger pieces I’ve been working on, yet!  So much to blog about.  Anyway, here are a few other things I completed over the past couple of days.
Do you remember this oar?
It was blonde and the finish was in pretty bad shape.  It had clearly been sitting in the great outdoors for a good while.  So, I sanded it, stained it in dark walnut by Minwax, hand painted some details on it, and then sealed it with Minwax wipe-on poly in satin.
Quite a transformation, huh?
The numbers and letters are totally random.  I liked the idea of the oar being painted with some sort of serial number…maybe one that matched a boat license number or something.  Who knows!  I was in DIY delirium and I thought it would look cool.
I also painted a “Pharmacie” sign on this wonderfully chippy cabinet door that I found.  It almost looks like someone gnawed on the bottom of this piece, but in the very best possible way.
I thought “Pharmacie” looked better than “Pharmacy.”  Sometimes things just look better in a foreign language.
I think this would look so cool on a small strip of wall in a bathroom.
My blog/web/brand/everything designer and friend, Laura, stopped by for a visit this weekend and she made me a sign to take to Lucketts and use at future shows.  Here’s a little sneak preview of it.  It is absolutely “me” and a perfect representation of my business.
Lucketts is in 2 1/2 weeks and then I need some really good sleep.  Whew!

I also need to say a “thank you” that I forgot to mention a few weeks ago.  Liz from The Brambleberry Cottage passed the Versatile Blogger award along to me, which was so sweet of her.  Thanks, Liz.  It is truly an honor.

You sound really excited, good on you! I dream about doing a show or market like Lucketts but I don't think I am quite there yet, with time or energy, lol, plus we don't have anything like that here! So I'll live vicariously through you and just be excited for you 🙂 Your stuff looks awesome, can't wait to see the big bits (I did note there hasn't been any for a while ;P ) and I wanna see the rest of that sign, you tease 🙂

      xx Karen

You just have the most unique ideas and they seem to be coming together! I have thought about refurbishing furniture and selling it. A little scared that it won't sell but I guess you don't know unless you try!

Ok I can't hear or see the word "oar" without thinking of the joke my father in law loves.

A man is rowing across a lake and accidentally drops an oar. In the scramble to grab it he knocks out the other one, so there he sits in his boat in the middle of the lake with no oars. A man with two women rows by and the first man hollers out to him, "Hey! Can I borrow an oar?" To which the man replies (in a thick scottish accent) "Dems not oars, dems me muther and me sista!".

I'm sorry I just couldn't help myself, it cracks me up everytime.

Anyway I love your oar and the pharmacie sign is just perfect.

Love the Pharmacie sign – any chance you'll do a tutorial?

    22. Christie

I love the oar and the sign! Can I buy both!!?? I am a pharmacist (retired to stay home with my children!) but think this would be super cool in my house! All that chemistry and I have nothing to show for it but dirty diapers and wiping noses! If its not for sale, I hope you will do a tutorial! Come see my old rowing oars above my son's bed at http://threepixielane.blogspot.com/2010/08/guest-retreat.html
when you have time, of course! Good luck at Lucketts! I wish I lived close by!

loving that oar! as a mom of small boys i'm just thinking "hello weapon" if i had this in my house! ah one day I can have something decorative that won't be used as a weapon!

    28. AntiqueChase

I just got a set of oars this past weekend while antiquing in San Diego.. once I brought them home I was a bit disappointed in the color of them.. I'm going to take your lead and do an oar makeover!!

    29. Allison@FabRehab

Lovely!! Can you share with us how you kept the lettering on the oar straight? I'd love to try that on an oar I have for my boys' room, but I'm scared of messing it up!
      GL at Lucketts!
