The Dental Cabinet

I shared in my recap of the Chapel Market that I bought this dental cabinet from Urban Farmgirl within minutes of it being unloaded.  Can you tell how happy I am and how much I love it?

Well, now it’s home and in the place it was always meant to be…

…this small and somewhat awkward wall has left me searching for the perfect piece for years.  Most pieces are too wide or look too short or not important enough to be the very first thing you see when you walk in the door.  So, I’ve been playing musical furniture in that spot more than usual….even for me.  I’ve always pictured a tall cabinet with a glass door that I could fill with my favorite thing to collect – white ironstone.  Now, it’s the first thing I see when I walk into the house and I love that.

It has the original white chippy paint and a coat of a very pale blue/gray on the inside.

Don’t worry, everyone.  I’m not going to paint it!  I just gave it a vacuum and a light cleaning and that’s enough.

I love the door hardware and the little number tag on the side…

I cannot express the love I feel for this dental cabinet.  I know it’s a dental cabinet, so it doesn’t rank up there with my love for my family and friends, but it’s probably close to the love I feel for Eulalie.

I also came home with a quilt that belonged to Layla’s uncle.  At the end of the sale, Layla had a few things left that she was giving away for free.  Kevin said they were not coming back into the house.  Now, I had a husband who drew the line at bringing the dental cabinet home, so I declined picking through the pile.  I turned to leave and spotted this quilt…

“No one bought that?!?”  It’s an antique quilt with lovely stitching and lots of blue and white mixed in with warm reds and muted browns.  I asked if I was really okay if I took it and Layla assured me she was happy it was going to a good home.

I still can’t believe it didn’t sell (for only $25, too), but I think it was just meant to be with me.  I love it and am glad I get to have it.

  1. I love the cabinet! I just found a antique French chair on the side of the road today that doesn’t need painted either! It has the prettiest blue chippy paint! Sometimes it’s nice to find things that don’t need any help and are perfect they way they are!

  2. Even though I paint furniture for a living….I still prefer pieces with the original paint. You got a winner there!

  3. Besides lusting after the cabinet (and you’re right – it really is meant to be there WITH all that gorgeous ironstone). I cannot believe a) the quilt was priced at $25 and b) it did not sell! What is wrong with people these days, not appreciating quilts as they should be?? I am seeing that a lot, especially in retail antique mall spaces (translate – my own!) where the prices for the hand worked items are depressed. Your gain! It’s beautiful.

    1. I can’t sell them either Rita. I figure I will have a nice collection one day once I give-up the hope of ever selling one. Interest in them will swing around again.

      1. Katy and Rita C….where is your shop??? I adore old antique quilts and always on the lookout ~ crazy that no one picked up that quilt for $25. If I was there I would have snagged it! 🙂

P.S. Marian ~ I LOVE the cabinet and adore your collection. I have 3 pieces of ironstone and hope to one day have an amazing collection like you!

  4. Hello Marian,
Yes…you did find the perfect piece for that area in your home…it looks perfect there. What an wonderful addition to your charming home…luv all the ironstone displayed in it. Oh silly me…how in the world did I miss Layla’s $25 family quilt? Happy it found a good home with you. I just finished taking some pics of my chapel market treasures and I hope to get them on the blog soon…that’s after I finish painting some items for the shop.

    Blessings,
    Linda

  5. I saw your instagram, and was so jealous! That cabinet is gorgeous, and perfect for that space.

The quilt is lovely, and I love that there is a history attached to it as well. And FREE? Girl, you hit the jackpot!

  6. I love that cabinet so much! I really need to come across more furniture like that! This whole full time job thing is a damper when it comes to awesome furniture finds! Your new addition fits that space perfectly!

  7. That is the perfect spot for the perfect cabinet. I think I may rival you for the love of that piece. I’ve always wanted a vintage lab or medical cabinet. The legs on that one are perfect and so is the hardware and the number tag omg!! How fabulous that it’s perfect as is, no painting required. How often does that happen? Congrats on a great show and for getting that sweet quilt from Layla.

  8. So happy this beautiful old cabinet found its forever home with you! It is the PERFECT piece for that spot and looks amazing filled with ironstone! Funny how things just seem meant to be. :o)

  9. I was thrilled for you when I saw your first picture…and I knew you would put it in the perfect place and display the perfect ironstone in it. And sure enough….you inspired and awed me, as usual! Nothing like something beautiful living in a happy home!

  10. You found a winner! Yes, it looks beautiful in its present form — especially with the chippy paint and rusty hardware. They are the charm you bring into your room.

So lovely!! I need to find some new sources for old pieces that I can transform as I love a mix of new and old in my home. I often turn to Craigslist or Antique Malls. Do you ever do that? I live in the midwest.

  11. Wow what a lucky find! I saw that photo on instagram too! It looks perfect in your home and displayed so well with your ironstone.I would leave it as is too.It is so hard to find cool chippy pieces like that. The patina is pure perfection! That quilt was a steal! I recently found an antique quilt at a goodwill store for….3.98! I was going to part with it but I just can’t.It’s too lovely and I don’t think I will ever find one so beautiful for that price!

  12. Oh that dental cabinet is stunning! It is such a perfect piece for that wall. I understand about an awkward wall…I have one when you first walk into our front door. I found the perfect piece a week or so ago. As with you, everything was too big, too awkward looking, too short, and so on. I found my piece at Habitat for Humanity ReStore…so happy I did!

And, a free beautiful quilt? It was meant to be with you!!

  13. How wonderful to see them both. I like old textiles. I think I would have grabbed the quilt, too!
Besides… line drawn or not…You need something to cushion the glass on that cabinet. I’ve been calling it a cupboard. Glad we finally settled on cabinet. I like the sound of it.
It looks charming there too…with it’s dainty little door pull. 🙂
Congrats on being a proud owner!
Keep your eyes on it…if it comes missing. Don’t look at me! Pat

  14. You hit the jackpot! Love the cabinet and the quilt! I’m so glad they are in a good home. Thank you for all the inspiration, you are such a good story teller, and I look forward to getting your email everyday!

  15. i’m with you on the dental cabinet… that is a great piece! looks wonderful in your home. the quilt is lovely as well. God Bless!

  16. I am so glad you found that cabinet, Marian–it is *practically*perfect*in*every*way!* The quilt was meant-to-be, as well. I’m so glad you all had such a great time in AL. (No envy here, ha!) Hugs and Blessings, Kim

  17. It looks like you did paint it.If it had to be painted, I think that’s how you would of painted it.Love the wood doors in the hallway!

  18. That cabinet is perfect! I have a few very narrow walls too. It really is hard to find furniture that is just the right size. And that quilt! Wow! I had one that was red, white, and blue, hand pieced and hand quilted from the 20’s in my booth for almost a year. I finally just brought it home.

  19. Love the dental cabinet but the quilt is making me swoon! If you ever decide to part with it – please let me know and I’ll pay double what Layla was asking for it!

  20. Marian,
That’s one of the prettiest dental cabinets I have seen and it fits like a glove in that space. In fact, all the dental cabinets I have seen were metal which is great if you want an industrial look. Don’t you love it when you least expect it and you find that perfect piece!

  21. There’s no question that certain things wind up exactly where they were supposed to be all along, and you just proved that truth once again! I love both the quilt and the dental cabinet and am so happy for you to have found them for your home when you weren’t even looking just for them! Enjoy!

  22. Marian … Those pieces were just meant for you and they are perfect in your house. Nice to find a piece of furniture that you feel you do not have to make over to suit your style.
    Happy for you.

  23. I swoon! I swoon! I’d see the dentist everyday! LoL. You gals who blog. Can’t get rid of handmade guilts, linens, etc… Ever think of selling them to us!? I’d have paid, MUCH more for that quilt. Just a thought. Loving on you!
    Beth

  24. Dear MMS, That dental cabinet is the sweetest! Your white ironstone is perfect inside it! Hugs, Anne Boykin

  25. MMS,
. Everything that you do, every piece I have seen that you have done just blows my mind!! I am a newbie and am sooooo glad I found your blog as one of my first. This dental cabinet IS exciting…..if EVER its for sale (which by the look on ur face in above pic I assume will not be ANYTIME soon IF ever 🙂 ) I would love the opportunity to purchase it.
. Thank you for sharing your newest find
    Vicki

  26. Oh.My.Heart…I am in love with that cabinet! You were so right to wait for the perfect piece…it was meant to be in that spot and spotlights your ironstone collection beautifully. I am so jealous 🙂
    Cindy

  27. I, too, have collected white ironstone for years, but have never seen anything like the large pieces on the top 2 shelves. What are they called? I have searched tureens and waste pots – no luck. I certainly don’t ‘need’ any more pieces, but those are so gorgeous. Now I am really curious as to the purpose of those pieces. Thanks for any information. Nancy

    1. The two large pieces on the top shelf? One is a soup tureen and the one with the boxwood topiary in it is a punch bowl. The punch bowls are pretty rare and I found that one for a steal at $65!

  28. The dental cabinet is perfect for the spot you had in mind….you are such an inspiration…I bought your book and love it , someday I hope to meet you at one of the markets…it is on my bucket list! Keep up the good work and thank you for sharing!

  29. What a find! That cabinet is perfect for the spot and also beautiful! I know why you are in love with it! I find much inspiration in following your blog! Your are so very talented and I love your home. Look forward to your daily posts!

  30. Love, love, LOVE the cabinet! I too am a big sucker for charming vintage pieces. 🙂 I have a question about lead paint… Do you seal a piece like this in the event it is painted with lead based paint? Thank you so much. I enjoy reading your blog daily, and just so you know I painted my first piece this weekend using your milk paint. I used shutter grey. 🙂

  31. Wow. I can’t believe no one bought that quilt for $25. What a steal! Up here, I never see vintage quilts going for under $100 unless they’re severely damaged. Even ugly old acrylic afghans seem to go for $25 and up. Soooo jealous. Love your style!

(And I love the dental cabinet too. But being a fiber crafter (unfortunately not an artist as I don’t have much of my own creativity, but I happily do other people’s patterns), I felt that someone needed to give that quilt some love!)

  33. I love the dental cabinet!! I would love to find one for my daughter who is a recent dental school graduate. Any ideas of where to look? I found your blog this morning when I googled “how to hand a drapery rod”. What a treat to find your blog!
