latest furniture haul

First of all, thank you so much for the amazing feedback on our latest video project!  Just like the “yellow dress and the dresser” video, it literally popped in my head and then happened so organically.  I am very much someone who does their best work out of inspiration, not on demand!  I imagine most of us are that way and we don’t feel as proud of things we created just because necessity or obligation dictated.

Anyway, as I shared yesterday, I needed a piece of furniture to paint for the video.  For the first time in a really long time, I was fresh out.

So, my mom and I went to a few local antique and used furniture stores to find a piece.

We found this pretty little dresser.  It really was gorgeous and not one I would usually buy to paint, but I was on a time crunch, so I bought it.  (So, those of you who were in the “you should’ve left it unpainted” camp, I get it.)

At that antique store, I also found some ironstone and smalls that I picked up for the online shop.

My mom and I completed our mission so quickly that we decided to hit another store.  I mean, why buy one piece of furniture when you can fill a van (and call your dad to bring his truck)?

I also bought this beautiful dresser.  The style of it is so unique.  I borrowed the pulls off of it to use on the reveal of the dresser above, but I ordered simpler pulls for it and will put the fancy hardware back on this piece.

Sorry for the horrible picture of this little pine chest!  I picked it up for a song and I loved the simplicity of it.  It’s definitely a “landscape candidate”.

And I bought this jelly cabinet…

I may actually paint this one Tricycle (red)!  I haven’t done anything red in a long time and, well, it’s about time.

I bought this piece from one of my favorite furniture/junk shops and furniture is packed in there so tightly that you can’t see the sides.  I was surprised to find an outlet on the side of this piece!

What’s funny about it is that it made me think of my Opa.  He was always doing random handy, but clever, things like this.  “You want an outlet there?  I’ll put an outlet there.”

Obviously, the outlet has to and will go, but it did make me smile.

Another piece with surprises on the side was this gorgeous antique hutch…

It has the prettiest detail on the shelves and is so well made.

The surprise was these vents on the side, so the inside could be used to store food.  I have never seen anything like that.  Have you?

The last piece I bought was a galvanized double wash basin.   With the response over the last wash basin I bought, I couldn’t pass this one up.

I’m going to paint the rusted parts in Farmhouse White, which will frame out the galvanized metal nicely.

Oh, that top!  And the inside is just as awesome.

In addition to these furniture finds, one of my “pickers” brought a few pieces to me.

This settee…

…this amazing chair that I can’t wait to get my hands on…

And an almost matching pair of wash stands…

I’m planning to sell the current cabinets we’re using as side tables in our master bedroom and use these.  Once they are painted, of course!

With new furniture pieces coming in and new projects going on in the studio, I need to sell a few pieces that were leftover from Lucketts.  I’ll list the details in the online shop, but you can e-mail me directly if you’re interested as well.

***All of the furniture has been spoken for.  Thanks!***

I still have this pretty hutch, which is now priced to sell at $150…

The “legless buffet“, which is priced at $100…

…the “man-made shelf“, which is ($50)…

…and, since I bought another wash basin, I am now selling the green one for $325.

Speaking of listing things in the online shop, another sale will go live tomorrow (Thursday, July 7, 2016), at 8:00 pm EST.  I have a new shipment of French soaps, some ironstone, and other goodies.

Shipments of German brushes and antique hemp sheets are also on their way!

  1. I am so excited to read about your latest furniture haul and can’t wait to see the magic! I wish my dad had a truck to help us move our furniture… My husband is still picking one piece at a time on the roof of our small Toyota Yaris!

  2. I just love these furniture haul posts – it is so fun to see the before and afters!

  3. I hope you are adding jute trim to the store, I’m in the middle of a project it would be perfect for..

  4. I have always loved the side tables in your master bedroom, and would love to buy them.

  5. You are so inspiring! I love every piece of furniture from your picking trip! Those galvanized washtubs have been getting pretty pricey in my area. I love your vision for all of your pieces. Your $150 hutch is a great price! I’m sure someone will snatch it up. I just love your style and the way you beautifully mix things. Sure wish I had your talent for doing upholstery! That looks way too complicated for me!

  6. Would love to see a piece finished the way you used to with distressing and antiquing wax. It’s been a while since you posted a rubbed wax finish. Seems like since you got busier more pieces are left unsealed or with just topcoat or hemp oil. I miss those beautiful, buttery finishes.

  7. I wish I lived closer. Would love to come and see your shop and buy some of your pieces! 🙁

  8. Thank you for the creative inspiration today. Your finds remind me that when we let things go, even when they’re good, we open the door to NEW things, which many times are even better!

I love everything you bought. Such great lines!

  9. Your “antique hutch” is a pie safe. The pierced rounds on the side are for ventilation, as is common in pie safes. When one puts a hot pie, fresh from the oven, in a pie safe (which is what they were used for, after all) it emits steam, and that steam must be able to escape. The oldest ones have large, pierced (in a design) tin panels on the doors AND on the sides. These panels rust easily. This pie safe is not that old, and someone obviously decided these circular vents were a better idea. I own several — one, with tin-paneled doors/sides, stores my table linens; another, with glass doors at the top (wood doors on the bottom) stores crystal stemware. They make convenient storage pieces, being relatively.

  10. I would love to purchase a sweet landscape painted dresser.Seriously. I love your work. It would be for a special reason, but you go ahead a.d work your magic,
I have 2 of your French Chairs that get compliments all the time.

  11. I am interested in the white hutch. Could you email me a pic of the bottom. I’m assuming it opens and there are two shelves there? Thanks!

  12. If I could find the types od furniture you find…I would be thrilled beyond measure.

  13. Great pieces!!!
Marian, have you made a video or written tutorial for milk paint as related to painting the fabric on sofas or chairs? I just picked up a side chair with similiar fabric as the settee that you recently purchased. The fabric is in great condition, but I’m not smitten with the floral tapestry pattern; I really would like to paint the fabric a solid neutral color and attempt the grain sack appearance. I’m looking for directions to use your milk paint on fabric. Thank you for offering any suggestions!

  14. Oh Marian! I have an almost-twin (the top drawer on mine is just one single drawer instead of two) to that second little dresser. My grandmother used it for many years to store her sewing thread.

  15. Good Morning. Starting my day with a fresh cup of toasted coconut coffee and reading your blog. It’s fun to see what you buy and then see what you do with it. I love your painting style and also that you share everything with your readers. That’s my philosophy too and it does make you feel good! I think your painted furniture murals are fabulous and hope to see more. I also love, love that old french chair. May I be added to the “would be interested to buy after it is done” I’m sure that list is loooong by now! Enjoy the day. Barb T.
PS I purchased one of your painted cupboards from Signature Finishes in Grafton, MA. Love it.

  16. I’ve never seen a cabinet with pie safe style vents built in. So unique and quite stunning! Lots of great pieces to work your magic on. Can’t wait to see how they come out.

  17. I have a china cabinet very similar to the one you have. I was my mom’s “picker” and bought it probably 20 years ago for her. She has since passed away and I’m now blessed to have it. Mine still has the original oak finish, so I’ll be interested in seeing what you do to yours. It just might inspire me! Please post pics when you work your magic on yours. 🙂

  18. I live in a little town in Southwest Riverside County, CA, but I wish I lived closer to you. I’d be buyiing furniturre from you like crazy!
