As I’ve shared in past posts about our kitchen renovation, we are working with a contractor and professionals on the “big stuff” and work that requires licenses and special skills, but we are doing a few things ourselves to stretch our budget a bit further. One of the projects we’re taking on is building a range hood. We did it in our Pennsylvania kitchen and, in fact, I wrote an HGTV tutorial sharing how we did it. You can find that tutorial HERE.

Remember the cow head? I actually still have it and I just might find a home for it in this house.
Anyway, the range hood insert we selected is the It’s a range hood that is meant to go into a cabinet, so the controls are on the underside.

Range hoods can certainly be a feature, but I want our range hood to be simple so it doesn’t detract from the range. As a reminder, the range, which is going to be the focal point of our kitchen, is the . It is very similar to this Ilve range, but mine is a little wider and it has windows. It’s an absolute beauty and I can’t wait to see it in the kitchen. It will be like Christmas morning.

Here is the exact range…

Of course, I will share all about the range and other appliances once we get them installed and we start using them.
So, I’ve been looking for ideas for range hoods that Jeff and I can build, and here are a few I saved for inspiration…

I like the simplicity of this one and how it shows a custom range hood installed in a kitchen with lower ceilings. Scale is very important when picking a range hood that is right for a space.

This is another kitchen with ceilings comparable to ours and the simple range hood would work well with other elements in the kitchen.

Again, I like the simplicity of this range hood, but I didn’t feel like the style was right for our kitchen. It’s a good option, though, if you’re building a range hood and want something easy and forgiving.

The trim on this range, as well as the decorative side pieces, are so pretty. Our ceilings are lower, though, so we’re not going to have room for a shelf or to achieve that visual height.

This is the range design that I kept coming back to as one that felt fitting for our kitchen. It’s classic and will be simple to build. I don’t plan on having corbels at this point, but I might change my mind.
The nice thing about this range hood cabinet is that we just need to build a plywood box at this point and then we will trim it out once it’s installed. That means I can make little tweaks to the design as other elements are put in place. We’ll get some materials over the next week, so we can get it built before the cabinets are ready to be installed. We do want the range hood to compliment the cabinets, so I ordered extra crown molding from the cabinet maker to trim out the top of the hood. I also ordered a quart each of vanilla and sage paint along with Waypoint’s topcoat so I can paint the hood to match the cabinets.
I’m already dreaming about what I might hang on the range hood. That’ll be the fun part!
Our hardwood floors are being delivered today, so that’s exciting!

When thinking about the corbels – test drive your largest tallest pot on the back burner(canner?) If hood is range width, they may impede usage of larger pots if your space is tight and you are doing a hood that’s inline. I love how corbels look, but for me function is priority one, then pretty, high end kitchens save them for alcove (where hood is wider than range)installments for this reason.
I love the idea of creating your own range hood. We did the same thing. We have an antique house and used old floorboards we were replacing to make our range hood and open shelves in the new kitchen. With white cabinets and marble quartz and a gray island, the pumpkin really warms the kitchen up and we get lots of compliments on it. I always keep a painting on the range hood, and like season platters (think turkey platter) for holidays. Your kitchen will be absolutely gorgeous, Marian, and I can hardly wait to see it all done!
Kitchen redesign is lots of fun. Can’t wait to see what you come up with. I opted for no range hood at all! I felt having the range hood in my small kitchen would make it feel smaller. So we instead, went for a down draft system. When not in use (which is almost never) the draft is hidden away. It was a bit pricey but I love that the focal point gets to be my things and the beautiful tile and not a big block of wood over the stove. It took me a long time to work this out as it is so out of the ordinary. I had to search hard for examples. But in the end, I’m so happy I did it. Your new kitchen is really beautiful Fran!
It is going to be awesome can’t wait to see. I have been trying to design a range hood for the stove we have in our canning kitchen. We do not have any hood right now and the moisture from canning is an issue. My main stumbling block is there are no upper cabinets near the stove AND the ceiling is sloped. Any thoughts?
WOW you were able to purchase a Gas range I thought the government outlawed them only electric ranges per their mandate ? Very Strange that you are not putting in electric how did you manage buying a gas range ?
Any ban on gas ranges would apply to newly manufactured ranges, not existing ones, but there are no bans in effect (as of yet) that I know of. I’m not too concerned about it at this point…
A really pretty choice for the range hood cover- at the moment I am team “no corbels”; however I would like to reserve the right to change my mind later! That is the joy of DIY – you can design it as you go:-) I also like #1 deVol, esp the trim that was used. Your range is quite fantastic! It is going to be such a lovely kitchen!!!
Those kitchens in the pictures are beautiful and look like many of the choices you made for yours. Can’t wait to see it finished…it will be gorgeous! I’ve wondered about your cow head. I really liked it when you had it years ago in your PA house. Good to know that it might make an appearance again. 🙂
My favorite is the first one, bit they are all nice. I am also on team no corbels.
