Weighty Decor

I love antique scales and balances. I’m not really sure why I am drawn to these, but I seem to gravitate towards the items that were functional or used daily in their prime. There’s something so soulful to me about antique fans, ironstone dishes, grain sacks, and old baskets that have been mended. Scales offer that kind of beauty in the functional.

I love how the green paint peaks through the rust on this scale and the numbers on the face are so classic.
This old grocery scale was a bit of a splurge for me, but I have always wanted one. It was $45 at an antique store in North Carolina and I picked it up as soon as I saw it. I figured I would rather have one item I really wanted instead of 3-4 items I liked, but didn’t HAVE to have. I HAD to have this!

This balance was another antique store splurge (I think around $50), but it is made of cast iron and the plates are milk glass. It’s a very interesting piece.

I really like the contrasting finishes on this piece. Who says you can’t mix metals. Here cast iron, brass, and steel working in harmony.

I think this is the very first scale I ever purchased. It was $14.00 at an antique store and something I’ve held onto for many years.
This balance is my most recent purchase. It was $20.00 at a yard sale. How could I pass that up? The blue/gray color of the cast iron is so beautiful and fits perfectly in my mostly blue & white home.

  1. I agree with buying one thing you really like instead of several you're just fond of, for I've done that sooo many times! I love your pieces here. They are timeless and therefore priceless!

  2. I just love all of your old scales. I'm drawn to them as well. I have one and it is from an old hardware company in my hometown. I love displaying it and changing it out for the season.
    Have a great weekend.

  3. Lurrrrve those, especially with the adorable nesty add-ons. I'm checkin out my local 50% Goodwill day today, I'll cross my fingers for something equally awesome!

  4. I totally agree. I love the profile of scales anyway, but those metal time worn elements complete with typography win me everytime. You have a wonderful collection!

LOVE the last addition as well.

    Thanks for linking up!

  5. While antique shopping the other day, I found a vintage baby/nursery scale. I had never seen anything like it! I scooped it up! I don't have a baby so I don't know what to do with it… but it was just too cool to pass up!

  6. I love old scales too! Your white one is especially lovely. I had an antique scale years ago, when it broke I threw it away. Now I am kicking myself because I realize I could have repaired it with some epoxy. Oh well, I just have to keep my eyes out for a new (old) beauty now.

  7. I love the beauty of the metals and clean, classic designs. You have a excellent collection of scales. Thanks for sharing… Dee Dee

  8. I collect old scales too. Mine are displayed on top of my kitchen cabinets along with some crocks, old blue Ball jars and old milk bottles. I just can't pass them up when I come across one 🙂

  9. Love these! I have several, but a few years ago I found this amazing grocery store "Springless" Ohio scale in the most gorgeous chippy pale blue paint. It must weigh 75 pounds. I fell in love, but it doesn't match any thing I have, so it's downstairs on our bar. I just can't part with it! You have some wonderfully unique examples! Thanks for sharing them.

This week started with the loss of power from a storm.  It wasn’t really the storm that knocked out the power, but the wall of wind that came right before the rain.  It took out trees, limbs, power poles, and made a general mess of our yard and pool.  Jeff
