One of the projects we tackled over the holiday was the master bedroom. It’s a room that’s been giving me trouble since the day we moved in. The space is just awkward. So, Mini and I painted the ceiling, walls and trim, my dad drywalled over an unnecessary doorway and then my mom and I put together the accessories. I still have a little more to do, but the bulk of the room is done.
The way this room came together was very organic. I put together things from all over the place and just went with what I liked, trying not to get too caught up with a specific theme or color scheme. It ended up being mostly shades of gray, greenish blue, cream, white and some brown. It’s a very restful, soft pallet that’s a bit of a departure from the high contrast blue and white in the rest of my house. I made new curtains, a bed skirt and a bolster pillow for the bed.
The walls are painted in Benjamin Moore’s Halo mixed at half strength and the ceiling is a slightly darker greenish gray that’s a custom mix. It’s very subtle and I love the color on the ceiling. We plan to put a lot of trim work in this room and I think the bright white will define it even more.
My dad hung a pair of antique shutters on an awkward wall using a kleat. I’ve been hoarding these shutters in my basement for a few months and it’s like I was saving them just for this space.
A $25 Goodwill headboard is standing in until I find something I like better that doesn’t cost a fortune. I hung some ironstone and transferware on the wall above the bed and flanked them with two wall lamps from Home Depot.
The lamps came with plain fabric shades, so I glued on some grosgrain charcoal ribbon in a pleated pattern around the top and bottom of the shades.
Here’s the wall that used to have a doorway smack in the middle of it. Now it’s a great focal wall for my $35 Craig’s List dresser.
The lamps were made by Alice & Jay and I customized the shades with cream linen and the same charcoal ribbon used on the wall lamps.

We also finished the office built-ins today. FINISHED!!! After five years of sketches and envisioning they are finally done and look fabulous. I’ll have a little photo shoot with the space tomorrow. I can’t express how exciting it is to make real progress in my house and I’m loving it more and more each day. I think that’s one of the real joys of DIY…taking a home you settle for and making it something really special.
