the file cabinet coffee table

First of all, I want to announce the winners of the giveaways I held last week.  Drum roll, please…

The winner of the Antique Farmhouse giveaway is Becky Yaddis!

And the winner of the Miss Mustard Seed in a Box giveaway is Melanie Milburn!

As I was making the major push to get ready for Lucketts earlier this year, I found a very cool part of an old, oak file cabinet at one of my favorite antique shops.  It was a good price ($65), because it was only one piece of a larger unit.  It was missing a top and had awkward strips on top of it, so another unit could be stacked on top.

Well, I found a random old top for $10 and Kriste found some great wheels ($12, I think) and bingo

…it becomes a coffee table.

Kriste’s coffee table to be more specific.  She snaked it before anyone else had a crack at it.

So, we started by prying off the strips on the top, so we had a flat surface for the new top.

I sweet-talked Jeff into cutting the wood top down for me.  I’m good with power tools, but I find the table saw a little intimidating.

The top had a routed edge on one side, so we left that and made it the front.  The other sides are cut straight and fit flush.

I attached it with a few wood screws from the inside of the cabinet.

Kriste stripped and stained the top to match and finished it in Hemp Oil.

And I screwed the wheels onto the bottom side of the table…

It’s such a neat, functional piece, now.  You could fill it with card games, magazines, books and remote controls.

Perfect for a coffee table.

And I thought I would show the progress on the dresser that was being such a jerk last week.

We had words.

He jumped off the hand truck onto my toe.

In return, I was abrasive.  A little 40 grit showed him what’s what.

But we worked up to 220 and he was mellowing out.  Finally seeing things my way.

And I rewarded him with a coat of Hemp Oil to bring out his best.

And, when it came time for the first coat of paint, MMS Milk Paint in Marzipan, we were finally on the same page.

  1. Congratulations to both very lucky winners! The coffee table looks fabulous…Kriste must be so excited to see how it will look in her new home. The transformation on the dresser is amazing already and I am looking forward to seeing the final result. Thanks for sharing such great projects.

  2. The dresser painted the unfortunate shade of brown is looking fabulous! Do you take the original hardware and pop it in a crockpot (like Nicole on Rehab Addict does?) to get it all clean?

  3. Congrats to the very lucky winners. The dresser looks amazing and love the file cabinet makeover. MMS rules!!

  4. So it’s morning and as usual, my mind is going 10,000mph. I wondered to myself, who named the coffee table, “coffee table.” Why not magazine table or remote table or mail table or toy table…. That’s my mind in the morning! So happy for the winners of the lovely giveaways! And to Kriste, that coffee table is the biggest winner of all and I’m sure will be a special piece in your home for many years to come.

    1. I would’ve sanded it if it was glossy, but it wasn’t, so I just painted straight over it and didn’t add the Bonding Agent to the milk paint. It stuck to this piece beautifully.

  5. I absolutely love this coffee table !!!!! Great score and a fabulous idea,Kristie !!!!
I’m curious, did you build a base and attach the drawers to it and did you screw the wheels into the base?
    Thanks for sharing with us.

  6. I’m all heart eyes and jealous face for Kriste’s coffee table, which is no surprise since I check craigslist for card catalog’s every other day. Excited for you Kriste!! Now I want a craftsman bungalow to play with!

  7. Two great pieces! So, all you did ( though it cost you your toe!) was sand and oil the top of the dresser? Will you add a topcoat? Hmmmm, I can see some new projects in my future :).

    Congratulations to the winners!

  8. Becky and Melanie are such lucky ducks! Congrats ladies…

I love oak and the coffee table/file is gorgeous. Thanks for the giveaway Marian, so sweet!

  9. Congratulations to Becky & Melanie! Have fun with your treasures.
I like oak and card file cabinets and wheels; that is a beautiful, one-of-a-kind, piece. Gives me an idea for an old, oak headboard that is languishing in the garage…
The dresser is going to be so handsome! I think someone, in a comment from an old post, called you “The Furniture Whisperer”.

  10. Is it the picture. Or does the coffee table look a little weak in the middle (sagging) i would add a center caster.

  11. That’s such a cool coffee table, and I’m a sucker for organization in a piece like that. I’m glad the dresser finally submitted. He’ll be handsome when you’re done with him.

  12. That is perfect. I love it. Refurbish things is such awesome to do. I love that. She will really enjoy it in her new home.

  13. I’m thinking of removing the paint I put on a washstand top and doing it like your dresser. I really like the look with the hemp oil.

  14. I love the File cabinet table !! My Mother use a card file box but she always had a small hammer and screwdrivers in it. My Grandfather used on his tool bench for years. She said she just loved the memories of her Dad when she used his tools.

  15. High five to the lucky winners! Hope you share your creations with us with that paint, glitter, hemp sheet etc…. How exciting!!!!! Dresser looking good, Miss Marian.

  16. That dresser is looking good!

    Can you put milk paint on top of hemp oil if you want to “feed” the wood first? {or change your mind later on?}

  17. You are hilarious! Loved the coffee table. Score, Kriste! Dresser is coming along. Like a husband…you were right to tag it “he.” ?

  18. Well, what can I say that hasn’t been said? I”m happy for Kriste with her so cool coffee table. What do you think that it or something similar would sell for if you bought it at one of the trendy furniture places? I”m going to guess around $4-500. if not more. SO, what a steal, Kriste! Good job.

I’m also happy-although green with envy–for the winners of the give-aways. Hope to see some projects from them soon!

Leave it to you, Marian, to tame an obstinate piece of furniture and turn it into a gem against it’s will! You are a persistent and unrelenting lady when you set upon a task! And funny, too! I wish you were my neighbor!

  19. Everything looks great – some of my favorite posts are your furniture building/repurposing/turn-this-into-that ones. I love how the coffee table came together.

  20. Hello all and Marian,

I was wondering if a piece of antique wood furniture finished w/a glossy type of dark stain and/or varnish/coat- must be stripped? Also, when I say stripped, I mean w/a chemical/agent of sorts (less toxic is best).

*OR, can you just sand it? The goal is to either put hemp oil, milk paint or another stain on it. Also, interesting you and Kristie literally pulled pieces off/strips by hand~ is that what you meant by “stripped” it? In researching online, there isn’t enough info. on how to deal w/antiques (stripping w/an agent versus just sanding, etc.)!

Thank you so much in advance for sharing all of your knowledge and work with all of us! Congrats to the winners and this piece is *just exquisite*! TGIF! 🙂

  21. Can you please let us know where the totally cool wheels came from??? I love them and have an old rack that now has home depot type wheels. Those would be a fabulous change out. TIA
