Night Stand Makeover

I am in a mad dash to refill my space at Lucketts.  I was basically wiped clean last weekend, but I’m really energized and on a creative high because of it.  I’m a strange bird, but I guess I’m in the right business!
Here’s my latest project…
In my flurry, I didn’t take a before picture, but it was a part of a set, so it looked like the dresser below.
I painted it in Graphite chalk paint with Old White details, distressed, followed by a coat of clear wax mixed with dark brown.

It’s a little different for me and I think it’s really striking.  (Yes, I realize the top handle is a little askew.  I just put the original hardware back on in the original holes…)

It looked very cool with the fan and theatre seat that are going to the space as well.

I’m filling up the booth early Saturday morning, so come on Saturday if you want first pick!
While my kids were in school this morning, I worked on this dresser.  I just put the final coat of wax on and it may be one of my favorites, now.  I’ll try to snap some after pictures before it goes to the shop.
…and I started work on this chair.  I know it wasn’t bad at all, but it just wasn’t me.

Pulling all of the tacks and staples out of this upholstery was brutal and took me the better part of the day.  Let me just say, to the person who decided to put nail head trim on this chair and the person who carried out that idea…
“A pox on both your houses.”

  1. Love the finished piece..You really do have a gift when it comes to refinishing furniture..Too funny on the "pox" ya put on the houses..Can't wait to see your space with the new items in it..Wishing ya another sell out..

  2. You work so fast — making the rest of us (or me) feel bad. I have a chair that also has to have nails removed & I keep walking by it thinking — tomorrow! Everything looks great. Jan

  3. So striking! I love the color combo on the new piece — is the dark grey slightly blueish or does it just seem that way in the photo? Either way, it's just stunning. Can't wait to see how the other pieces turn out, either!

    Best,

    ~Angela~

  4. Genius!! Flat out gorgeous. I keep coming back to peek…I do believe you have tipped me over the edge to get the chalk paint 🙂 Enabler…

  5. Love it! I can't wait to see the dresser with the peeling veneer.

Where do you find your accessories for your shop? They're so cool!

  6. Ok – I can't look at one more pic of chalk paint results without getting some! Love the color. That nightstand is beautiful and I have a similar one that's going to get a transformation. Thanks for the inspiration.

  7. Love it! And can't wait to see how the chair and chest turn out. One quick question for you… are you finding that you are somewhat less productive now that you're back to hand painting with the chalk paint as opposed to using your sprayer?

  8. I just picked up a dresser like the "before" shot of the nightstand you refinished (love it, btw!). Mine is as wide as the dresser, same hardware, but for some reason the top two drawers (side by side) are inset like 3/4 inch. The person I bought it from hot-glued strips of bamboo in the insets. Gotta dig it all out, and then figure what I'm going to replace it with.

I'll be posting pictures once I actually get back to the piece… Would love some advice!

And can't wait to see what you're doing with the veneered piece!

  9. That really turned out great.. you never cease to amaze me! I love that color.. I want to order some to redo a china cabinet that was from the family.. can't decide on the color.. I have off white cabinets and black painted chairs at the table.. hmmm..

  10. You are brilliant, you should be in this business! You turned something I wouldn't have even noticed into a wonderful piece.

I have a chair I found in the street that I want to turn into something else, I need to read some tutorials, getting to work on it next week. Wish me luck!

  11. Love these – awesome – just bought a chair like this one, and the fabric and trimmings, and nails. And now they just sit there, because I have a feeling I will destroy the chair (it's pretty as it is, but could be awesome) – so maybe I will muster up some courage and get working on the beaut.
    A xx

  12. Oh dear, so all of those nailheads were INDIVIDUALLY attached, eh? Wow, you are persistent — I doubt I would've had the stick-to-it ability to remove every. single. one. of those things! I get bored really easily. Can only imagine how awesome the "after" is going to be.

The nightstand is totally cool. Really great paint color combination. I've got two nightstands and a long, 9-drawer dresser with similar hardware, was thinking of doing an off-white distressed finish with mirror-fronted drawers (got that idea from you!) and silver leafing the hardware, but not sure how leaf would hold up on the hardware. May just give it a shot as an experiment.

    Best,

    Kimberly

  13. Nice night stand. I like your vision of white details. The dresser is amazing and I can't wait to see what you do with it.

    The chair is sooo cool!

  14. Dear Marian,
So glad you booth is doing so well. I love Lucketts and it is the perfect place for you.

PS…I ordered my chalk paints, wax and brush. Shipping was pretty cheap…around $9.00 for all!

  15. I'm loving what you are doing with the chalk paints. I hope I can order some really soon. The theater chair was a find! Congratulations on all the awesomeness that is coming your way & thanks for sharing so much. I'm ready to see your bathroom makeover (it's not like you're busy or anything!) love ya girl! JenT

  16. Oh my Gosh! I am actually refinishing the matching desk to your black dresser and night stand. Who knew more pieces existed! Same detailing, same feet, same pulls, same top edge! Love the black. Thanks for sharing. So far I have painted mine cream, plan to stain the top, and antique the paint. Love your work. Kellie B.

  17. That little finished piece is a bit out of the box for you–but lovely nonetheless. Too bad you had to redo the French chair, the nail head trim was pretty cool, but, alas, it was not you… Hugs-I'm so delighted to see your business is booming!

  18. Love it, love it, love it!! I have a mish mash collection of antique and mass produced 1980's furniture in my bedroom that is 4 different colors. I am a huge fan of black furniture and love the mix of black with white accents on this piece. I have been considering buying the chalk paint to refurbish and try to pull this eclectic collection together to form a more harmonious look. You do this so perfectly and with such comfort and charm, in a way that says "this is home". Thanks so much for sharing with us all your tremendous talent and vision. Best wishes for a successful year.

  19. I've already told my husband that I am going on a painting spree this summer because of you! Thanks for posting such great resources and inspiration. And I laughed out loud at your staples comment. I just finished an upholstery project and I think there were 3000+ staples involved. So I feel your pain! It took better than 3 days (on and off) to get the piece of furniture staple free!

  20. Love the new nightstand! (Also, here's a funny little story…while watching an episode of hoarders I saw a dresser just like it, same exact detail, and said to my hubby…"oh, Miss Mustard Seed would love that dresser, she just did one just like it!"…it was pretty funny, to me at least, to see a "treasure" among all that person's trash!

I love all your work and wish I lived closer so I could come buy some of your items. Do you still ship? Or is pick-up only? We're moving into a new place soon and starting a new chapter in our life and I need some new pieces to fill up my new home.

    Blessings!
    -Grace

  21. I am so thrilled your booth is doing so well! That is so fun, and so fulfilling. Why have I not bought chalk paint? Today, today, today. Love what you did with the color.

I learned a good thing about tacks and pulling, when kids, esp. boys are old enough, they LOVE doing this kind of job, and it earns extra money for them too. My son is 9, so I know you have some time to go, but soon enough, you will have some helpers there.

  22. I almost want to weep that you're reupholstering the chair. It could definitely use some paint…but that fabric is amazing. I'm sure it'll turn out great though…ps – what do you do w/ the old fabric?

  23. Miss Seed, You are so amazing I love it 🙂 It is because of you that I'm even on this journey I was google-ling one day and I stumbled across your blog about 2 months ago and now I'm completely obsessed. If all of these creative minds could come together imagine what we could do. Sending you a cyber-hug if you're ever in Ohio let's hit a few flea markets together.

  24. The first dresser you have pictured, do you know anything about who made that dresser? i have one that is very similar design, and it is has the original sticker in the top drawer, and it says Kent Coffey. I looked up this manufacturer and found that his early pieces are pretty rare and that my dresser is from the 1920's and belonged to the "Ablemarle" collection. Check out my dresser on my blog and see what you think http://www.completelyshabby.blogspot.com
I have only been able to locate one other dresser just like in in California and the guy was selling it refinished in the original wood for $500

  25. Outstanding color! To me it looks very vintage and quaint…both wonderful things to look like in my book.

I have to share, the more blogs I read lately the more I see referencing your blog and the chalk paint. Seems to be a big hit!

  26. Stunning. My chalk paint shipped yesterday. I'm assuming on the decals you used a fine brush to add the color. Each piece is more beautiful than the last. Wish I were closer to grab a piece. Smiles…Renee

  27. Other than your Union Jack dresser, this nightstand is one of my favorite pieces you've ever done! Bravo! I love it and if I lived in your neck of the woods (I live in California) I'd be at your shop on Sunday morning to buy it!
Can't wait to see how you re-do the chair.
    karen

  28. Every time you use a new color you make it harder for me to choose another color. I just did a small table in the Old Ochre and love it. It is in my post now. Love the graphite and I love the provence blue you used. Decisions decisions.

  29. Totally feeling your creative high! Congrats on the success and LOVE the detailing on the night stand and the way the white makes it stand out. Keep up the amazing and inspiring work!
    -Amanda

  30. Well of COURSE your stuff sold out! Duh. 😉 It's fabulous goodness, and the folks out there must recognize good stuff when they see it. Or maybe you need to charge a little bit more. Just sayin'. 😉

  31. It's a little different for you but I still see you! Looks great. The darker color is a nice change.

I'm sure those nail head were a huge pain. You mean you didn't take them out gingerly so you could reuse them? 😉

    Happy belated birthday too!

  32. I love the piece that you painted with "Graphite Chalk Paint". In your photos it looks navy blue, but the website (www.chalkpaint.com) states that it is an almost black. I am thinking about trying it out on a dressor for a boys room, but I amn looking for a navy blue. Is this color more navy or black? Have you tried another color of Chalkpaint that is a true navy blue? Let me know. nancypenfold2003@yahoo.com

  33. I just read my comment online and I am so sorry for the spelling errors, apparently I need to slow down before I post comments.

  34. Not only are you one talented lady when it comes to refinishing furniture – I also just LOVE your writing style! You have a great sense of humor and I thoroughly enjoy reading your witty remarks!

  35. This is near and dear to my heart. My father was wonderful restorer of furniture and created some beautiful pieces. Thanks for sharing this.

  36. the nightstand is beyond words! the combo of color and distressing is so unique and original-LOVE it! my parents have this same style of furniture…you have my wheels turning for when mom decides to find it a new home.
please give us a sneak peek at how you did the details with the old white.

  37. Wow! Beautiful work! I know every time I log onto your site I am going to be amazed by your newest creations. You have definitely found your calling!
I just wanted to tell you that thanks to you I had the courage to make my first slipcover. I truly would have never done it without your slipcover tutorials. They were amazing and for my first slipcover I couldn't believe how well it came out AND how much fun I had making it! I've been blogging about the whole process and I gave you a little shout out in this post in case you want to see. http://1060bliss.blogspot.com/2011/04/adventures-in-slipcovering-part-iii.html

Thanks again! You are awesome! 🙂

  38. YOU ARE COMPLETELY AWESOME. PERIOD. (And I'm sorry about your tile issue 🙁 )
I know you were talking about nailheads, and I haven't put this tool to work on real upholstery, but when I'm restretching art canvases, the best tool to remove the damn staples is… a staple puller from my office. Ya know, the ones that look like an alligator.
And while I'm at it, my artist's Gesso is essentially a chalk paint (and suuuuuper cheap) so I'm going to try adding acrylic color to it and see what happens on my next refinishing attempt.

Oh yeah, AND YOU'RE STILL AWESOME!

    Heidi

  39. My sister inroduced me to your blog about a month or so ago, and I was soooo inspired, i've refinished 5 pieces in the last 3 weeks!!! (I think i'm on a roll!!) My work is different then yours, but, nontheless, you are very inspiring, creative, & really neat to read & watch. Still trying to find my niche, maybe when I grow up, I can be like you…;-) Thank you for sharing the great, the good, and everything in between!! Cheers
