More Mustard Seed Creations

I have a ton of projects that are in the works, but none of them are completed for me to show you. I should have new before & after pics in a couple of days. Until then, I wanted to share some pictures of some of my painted furniture with you. I did most of these pieces around the same time and, as you can clearly see, I was in a blue/green/aqua mood. I hope you enjoy…

This was a $5.oo thrift store find. It was dark and dated, but came out lovely in a watery blue with simple white detail.

This cabinet was $17 at a “going out of business” antique booth. It sold the first day I put it in our shop.

This vanity was $35.00 at an antique shop and was rough! It looked like someone had been using it to store cans of paint on…what a sad fate for a vintage vanity. So, I sanded the heck out of it, painted it a gray blue, and added a large scale floral pattern in white. There is a matching mirror that’s not pictured.

When I spotted this 1970’s wooden cake pedestal in a thrift store for $3.00, I thought, “I can paint this.” I never thought I would paint a cake pedestal, but I love how it turned out.

This cubby hole desk was a $15 Craig’s List find. It was painted a beige and white and had stickers on it. After a good cleaning and sanding, I painted it a blue/green with simple white details following the lines of the desk. This piece sold in less than a month. More to come, so keep checking!

  1. As always, gorgeous and inspiring stuff!!! I love that you painted the cake stand!
And that cabinet with a painted scene… WOW girl!!!!

  2. They are all stunning!!! I love the cake pedestal!!!! I wanted to find one to paint and make very vintage Halloween, for cupcakes 🙂
The nightstand is so sweet. Just love the color pallette. I go through color phases too. It all looks amazing!!!

  3. Thanks for the comments, ladies! The longest part of a project is repairing, sanding, priming, and painting. That can take a few days to let the piece dry between coats. The actual decorative paiting generally takes me about 30 min – 2 hours, depending on the complexity. I'm quick! 🙂

I do not link stripping paint. I have tried it in the past and I hate it. However, I have recently found some strip-worthy pieces, so I'm going to give it a shot. There is now a waterbased stripper available, so I'm going to give that a try. I'll let you know how it works! Are you stripping that green counter, Julie?

  4. LOVE your blog! You've definitely inspired me to try updating a few pieces of furniture in my house – and to acquire a few new ones that I can "restore"! I wasn't sure if I could get a finish I'd be happy with, so I started small. I found an adorable child's bench at a garage sale for $5! It was an obnoxious shade of salmon pink, but after applying a white wash and then making it look more aged with some diluted stain, I think it's turning out really nice! Thanks for inspiring me to give it whirl! I know my daughter is going to love it!

  5. Did you coat the pedestal or did you just use plain paint?
Love the colors! And the painting on the white cabinet is amazing!

antique-inspired color charts

I’ve been making and selling color charts on linen for a few years.  My first one was inspired by color charts found at an artist’s estate sale.  I was so smitten with them when I first spotted them online – the colorful squares in oil framed by age-stained fabric –
