It’s time for another Lucketts Spring Market! Right on cue, the rains have come in just as vendors are setting up, and there is more rain in the forecast. If an area is ever experiencing a drought, they just need Lucketts to set up shop, and the rain will come! As a former vendor who has experienced spring rain at Lucketts, I’m only partially kidding. Fortunately, the Clark County Fairgrounds has good drainage, and most vendors are in covered buildings. I’m hoping for everyone involved that we get some sunshine! No matter, I’m heading to the VIP day on Friday, rain or shine.
Here are a few things on my wish list for this market…
I have almost completed the first draft of my book manuscript, and I’m moving on to work on the photography. The book is about creativity, so I’ll be styling photos of creative tools and materials, hopefully in a way that makes people want to reach through the page and play with them. While I have plenty to work with at home, it’s nice to have some fresh things to photograph and style, so I’ll be looking for creative tools and materials.
I have been looking for a dresser for the guest room since we moved in, and I just haven’t found the right one! It needs to be a particular size and shape due to a baseboard vent, so I’m hoping I’ll find something at Lucketts this year.
This is already the second dining room table and chairs I’ve had in this house, and I think I want to move on to a third! The first one was $40, and this one was $150, both found on Facebook Marketplace, so I haven’t been heavily invested in either of these sets. This one is good in a lot of ways – sturdy chairs, sturdy table, and a style that works, but everything needs to be stripped and refinished (hence the constant usage of tablecloths), and every time I think about working on it, I hesitate. I’ve concluded that I simply don’t love this set enough to put that much work into it.
I’d much rather find a set that makes my heart flutter. I found a great table at Lucketts last year and passed it up. Yes, I’m kicking myself. I’m hoping I’ll find something perfect this year. Of course, I’m just taking my van (I couldn’t secure a rental truck or van this year), so I’ll only be able to fit a dresser or a dining set, not both. If I find two things I really, really, love, then I can always make two trips.
I have found some wonderful frames at the Lucketts store and market, and I hope to find some more this week.
This one is a bit random, but I’d like to find a basket for Sebastian’s toys. I usually keep them in a drawer and have to get them out for him, and, when they are out, he leaves them around the house on the floor. There is nothing quite like stepping on a squeaky bone first thing in the morning. I’d like to find a basket that’ll be the right shape to sit in a corner and hold his toys so he can get them out when he wants, and I can easily pick them up.
And, I’m always keeping an eye out for original art that speaks to me. While I do hang some of my own artwork in my house, my favorite pieces are antique paintings I’ve picked up here and there.
Since I just need a thinning down of some of my collections, I’m going to make an effort to steer clear of knick-knacky things that I really don’t have the display space for. I can admire it, love it, take a picture of it, and leave it for someone else.
Naturally, my mom will be joining me, and we’ll be meeting up with our cousin and one of her friends. We’re already looking forward to our bi-annual Lucketts onion rings…
I can imagine the pre-sale excitement! I am in the midst of getting ready for my yearly neighborhood garage sale myself, and I always enjoy every aspect of it. The best part is all of the conversations with creative-minded people who come to my house to relieve me of my treasures! They are just as much social events as decluttering and treasure hunting events. I hope you will find what you are looking for at Lucketts this year!
Tetris skills come in handy for packing in all the goodies! Maybe even make it possible for a table AND a dresser — just sayin’ 🙂
🙂
Looking forward to seeing what you come home with — and also wishing I was with you and your mom!
You mentioned looking for original art and that brought a question to my mind, I have run across art before in antique stores and the tag might say it is an original oil painting or watercolor but how can I be sure? I don’t know how to tell the difference between a reproduction (mass produced) and an original because the reproductions have gotten so good! If it’s not an original oil painting then I don’t want to pay the price of an original.
Good question! To confuse things even further, the word “original art” can be used in a couple of different ways. When I’m looking for an original piece of art, I mean that it’s painted by an artist and it’s not a print. Original can also mean it’s an original design as opposed to a copy of another, likely a more famous work. I actually don’t mind buying student copies since they will never be exactly like the original, and they are still painted by a human hand. There is a big difference between a copy and a forgery, though. An “original” copy should always be labeled as such and signed by the copyist, not as the original artist.
With paintings, you can usually tell by the texture of the paint. If it’s a watercolor or a fine art print (like lithograph, linocut, etc.), that can be a bit harder to tell. Looking at the back can help, to see if there are any labels, a signature, or if it looks like artist’s paper, etc. I wouldn’t rely solely on the dealer’s description unless they specialize in art. Sometimes they are just guessing, too! I hope that helps a little bit.
Thank you so much! Yes, I think that will help a lot!
You have always seemed so modest/humble about the quality/beauty of your own paintings. I sure hope you are enjoying and sharing your talent on your own walls! I, too, love old original art but your work is amazing and lets us “know” Marion!
I was wondering if you have a maximum FBMP distance you’re willing to drive for something you think you’ll love when you see it in person. I’m searching for a small round kitchen table with leaves and six chairs, two of which are armchairs. And a French country feel. I almost did a nine hour drive but talked myself out of it.
Ha! I rarely drive more than an hour, but it would depend on the piece. 🙂
I’m excited for you.. have fun and good luck hunting. 🙂
I’ve been to the Lucketts store when my daughter was attending college in VA, but never the Spring Market. I so enjoyed the store so the market sounds and looks amazing! I’ll be heading, for my first time, to the Springfield Ohio Antique Extravaganza this weekend! Apparently, it is one of the largest in the nation! I’m excited! I too am looking for frames, art, perhaps a dresser, and anything else that might capture my heart. Enjoy and come rain or shine, I look forward to seeing the treasures you find!
I take my.KIA van, it’s amazing what we can get in there ! I have also had to go back on Saturday for another load, lol. Have a great time !
