It’s Easy Being Green

I’m a blue and white kinda gal.  The nice thing about painting furniture to sell is that I can have a little fun with the colors.  I don’t have to have a place for it in my house.  I just have to be proud to put my name on it.
I bought this wooden plant stand at an auction for a couple of dollars.  It didn’t look bad as it was, but it was a little tired and  a little blah.
I can’t think of a better way to make a piece special than paint it in an interesting way.  So, first I sanded and sprayed the piece with bonding primer.  I had some grass green paint on hand, so this is what I went for.  I can’t tell you why, but I just thought it would work.  One of those gut feelings.
This green was pretty bright, so I sanded the heck out of the piece and wiped on some dark walnut stain.  The result is this heavily distressed piece that has a wonderfully warm antique look.
It could’ve been plucked off the back porch of some old farm house…doesn’t it have that look?

I had a few questions about this paint color.  For those who are brave enough to use it, it’s Grasshopper by Sherwin Williams.  I’m warning you, though.  It’s bright.  The walnut stain and distressing really toned it down.

PS – The verdict on Furniture Feature Friday?  It’s a keeper.
I posted this to TDC‘s Before & After party.

  1. I love it!! My grandmother told me when I was a little girl that green was God's favorite color, that's why he made so much of it! She also told me it went with any other color. I love it and surround myself with it and carry my green purse with everything!!

  2. Well, Miss Mustard Seed..this is awesome. I would love to try this sometime but, I know in advance, it sure wouldn't come out looking this fabulous..Great job.

  3. I have seen that green so much in this area of Pennsylvania. It DOES look like you picked it of a farmer's back porch! I love the wonderful finish of the stain over paint.

  4. I love the plant stand but of course I love all you do and congratulations on going over 1400 followers. Love Mom

  5. It looks perfect in grass green, a color I probably would not choose on a paint chip but from now on I'll take a second look! Theresa

  6. This looks so great! I love how you did the green with the stain. Looks wonderful and it's inspiring. I dragged a desk home from the Goodwill this week and it's primed…just waiting for a final color decision.

  7. MMS,

When I rolled to your blog my eyes popped straight out of my head when I saw that little stand!

It did remind me of an old farmhouse piece. It seems that that family of greens was the color of choice. I have over the years picked up pieces of furniture or my dad has and stripped them to find that green underneath.

May I tell you again how gifted you are with your paintbrush?

  8. I love the green and yes, it would look great on a front porch…say mine? Put a beautiful little plant on it or even a better, a vintage white birdhouse I just found that is looking for a base to sit on. Would look lovely.

Glad the link party is a keepter!

  9. I'm inspired. I love the bold color but how you aged it. Forgive me, for I will soon copy your idea entirely 🙂

  10. How fun to experiement with colours you yourself wouldn't use!

You've done true justice to that little plant stand. I'll have to show this one to The Magic Brush. I TOLD her her John Deere green mirror could be saved with a glaze! 🙂

    Beautiful!

Thanks for linking up to SNS!

  11. I'm a blue and white gal too but my husband likes green. I use green as an accent colour mixed in with my blue and white and I really like it.
Your little plant stand is fabulous. You have a real talent at adding just the right amount of distressing and the right amount of stain in the right places. I love it!
