Ironstone & Opera Glasses

My mom and I went out shopping on Monday and, while most of the stuff I bought is to sell, I can’t help picking through the ironstone to give myself first dibs!  I’m also starting to hang onto pieces for the Luckett’s Spring Market in May.  I don’t want to sell it all in the online shop and then scramble to find awesome stuff for the shoppers who come to Lucketts.  So, I’ll sell some and I’ll squirrel some away for May.  I didn’t find any spectacular pieces, but I found some really pretty old pieces.  Chunky, super heavy pieces with amazing patina…

Stacks of ironstone makes me happy.

I also bought a pretty antique petticoat…

I sort of hemmed and hawed over it, but then I saw the signature on the waistband…

…and it was only $15.  And my gut tells me this will make a killer sink skirt for my half bath.

Hope H. E. Patridge won’t mind that I’m repurposing her dainties!

And I got some fun mail today…

These were listed on The Mustard Seed Pages by an antique dealer who sells on Etsy and has partnered with me as a sponsor – Carrie of Copper & Tin.  I spotted them and sent her an e-mail letting her know these had my name on them.  I don’t know what it is about opera glasses and binoculars, but I just really like them and these mother of pearl beauties captured my fancy.

And Carrie also sent me a brush.  She knows the way to my heart.  Some girls like shoes.  I like…well, you know…

You can find some of Carrie’s stuff listed on The Mustard Seed Pages or you can shop her Etsy shop, Copper & Tin.  She’s offering a 10% discount to my readers!  Just enter MISSMUSTARDSEED as the coupon code when you purchase something from her shop.

Speaking of the Mustard Seed Pages, it has been so fun for me to watch all of the things listed and sold there!  You should check it out if you haven’t already…

PS – There is a MMS Milk Paint giveaway going on over on the MMSMP blog

  1. Love, Love, Love your ironstone. I was reading your earlier post on it too. I live in MA and it is much harder to find here, so I envy that you can find it so easily. I enjoy your blog, but want you to know I am coming over to relieve you of some of the sweet brushes you have.

  2. Love your products and creativity! I started following you on Pinterest and subscribed. Keeping my fingers crossed. 🙂

  3. Ohhhh… I was really hoping the petticoat was for sale! What a great find! I have been looking for something like that to “dress” a dress form I have. If you find another… I’ll purchase it! 🙂

  4. I love Carrie and her Copper and Tin store ! I bought four really cool mushroom prints from her a while back that are hanging in my kitchen as I type 🙂 The mother of pearl on those binoculars is swoon worthy.

  5. Your opera glasses remind me of some my grandmother had when I was little. We would use them when she took me to see plays. I wonder what ever happened to them. Thanks for the memory.

  6. Marian,
As much as I like the ironstone I love Mother of Pearl opera glasses more.
I have a french pair and they came with the little leather case with a brass closure with a honey bee on it. If I remember correctly Napoleon’s symbol was the honey bee. I think I am due for another pair.

  7. I had my eyes on those opera glasses and wish I had grabbed them! So glad you did, they had your name written all over them. I will look forward to seeing them in your staging…they are just beautiful and so unique.

  8. You’ve got your petticoat and Opera glass, all you need to find is a gown and you’re off to the Opera, or ballet or whichever! Love those binoculars! What a gem of a find. The petticoat for the bathroom sink is such a romantic touch, but being the theater costume person that I am, I don’t know if I could bare to cut into it! But then, that’s what you do in costume design anyway, rip it apart and make something else fabulous! I look forward to seeing it. 😉

  9. Dear Miss Mustard, how can we write each other, because I really want to contact you directly?

  10. Lovely ironstone~~~lovely opera glasses~~~&~~~lovely petticoat!! You had a fabulous shopping trip :0). I just started my ironstone collection with two adorable creamers. Thank you for teaching the signs to look for. Have a good weekend!

  11. I am new to milk and chalk paint and love how each piece looks. Really love your colors and the pieces you have done. Would love to win so that I could use some of the other products. Now I want to paint all of my furniture. The hard part is picking a color, I love them all. Your Opera glass find is great, they are beautiful. Look forward to following you and gaining inspiration from your pieces. Karen

  12. Great looking opera binoculars, Marian! Looking at them makes me remember how I miss going to the opera. It’s been quite a few years now…

Now, you only need an opera length pearl necklace and a pair of tickets to La Boheme. 🙂

  13. Oh my gosh, that petticoat is so insanely wonderful… I’m so glad you grabbed it! It’s such a pretty one, and it even has a name on it… completely awesome…

  14. Had an antique shop for several years found that powdered BIZ mixed to paste and
slathered on linens will remove many of the stains without damage and still leaving
    It mellow. Really enjoy MMS!

  15. Think you could wear the petticoat under a longish skirt with your great boots!
On the lookout for ironstone in RI, I’m on the hunt. Hoping to hang platters and plates
on a wall. Noticed shipping charges on some websites are more than the pieces. Hmm.

  16. My dad inherited a pair of opera glasses similar to yours and I have them now. And I too, simply adore them!! How fun for you!!! I love to use them in vignettes all the time and I’ll be looking forward to seeing them pop up in yours.
    Blessings!
