I was the lucky recipient of Valentine’s Day flowers that were given to someone else, but left with me. My mom was visiting and my dad, being the sweet guy he is, sent her flowers to my house. A bouquet of flowers doesn’t travel well on an airplane, so she left them with me.
My husband and I agreed a long time ago (after he, very sweetly, paid about $40 for a bouquet of carnations), that we were not going to do the dinner/flowers/chocolate thing on February 14. We’ll save those things for another day when the restaurants aren’t packed and the price of flowers isn’t jacked up two fold. Nevertheless, the girl and the photographer in me really enjoyed the fresh flowers.
We had a nice little photo shoot together as I arranged them in an ironstone pitcher I bought last week.
And they looked great in my guest room. I took a little flack from someone a few months ago for having a fake bunch of boxwood by the bedside. I love fresh flowers, but I simply can’t afford them on a weekly basis. I can’t wait until my hydrangea bushes are nice and full and can provide an abundant, free supply.
I also purchased these Bakelite pieces from The Old Lucketts Store last week. The knives have amazing detail and I’ve never seen a fork like that. At only a few dollars a piece, I couldn’t pass them by.
Even though it’s dented and worn, this trophy called out to me. Can you imagine winning a cup like this for a relay race? This is definitely made in a different era…the 1920’s to be exact.
Come back tomorrow when I announce the top five finalists in the Copy Me Challenge.

Hey! Fake boxwood is one of my go-to fake flowers! Shame on anyone who doesn't recognize the merits of fake boxwood! Fresh flowers do bring something a little magical to a room though. Nice photos!
Love the trophy– I would have picked that up, too!
Let the record show, I knew exactly who would wind up with the flowers! Love, Dad
I read your blog all the time, but never leave a comment, but today I had to. I just read the comment that your dad left for you and it so touched my heart and made me smile that I had to tell you. What a GREAT daddy! What beautiful flowers!
God bless you abundantly!
Your dad is the sweetest!
the flowers look beautiful! how sweet of your dad 🙂
love your finds too….the trophy is great!
So sweet of your dad. My hubby and I have also decided to forgo the Valentine's Day deal–I'm so glad we're not the only ones! Thank you. Now I don't feel all alone.
Love your (mom's) roses & the photos. That red is so vibrant. I used to buy fresh flowers once a week. It's not in the budget anymore so this year, I'm going to give a go at a flower garden. Every once in while, I'll grab a bundle at the supermarket to split up around the house. Never underestimate your grocery story blooms. 🙂 Love your finds. That trophy is pretty cool. And, how awesome is your dad?! This is like the second comment I've seen from him that choked me up for a sec. lol
Hugs,
Jami
Pretty flowers-
and I see where you get your keen sense of finding a good deal…
your Dad sounds pretty wise- flowers for both his girls enjoyment…sounds like a good deal to me!
I got tulips… aren't flowers pretty?
LOVE that trophy cup!! Beautiful roses too. How sweet of your dad! Who was giving you a hard time about your boxwood? I love boxwood! So to you faux boxwood haters *BLAAAAHHHHHH sticking out tongue at you* Lol! Well at least I feel better.
Like you guys we don't do the whole over priced Valentines thing either. We'll go out bargain shopping and buy for each other whatever treasures strike our fancy. Maybe not so romantic? But I like it like that *winks* Vanna
Lovely flowers and by the looks of it, an even lovelier Dad 🙂 x
I LOVE cut flowers. When shopping for new perennials for my garden, that is the first thing I look for, can I cut them and bring them in. Very few make the cut if I can't. Already looking at seed catalogs to see what I want for this year!! 🙂
I bought some for me this week, yes they probably were overpriced, but I have gotten so much joy out of them on my table, it was worth it.
i too love fresh flowers, wish i could have them all the time! i love your find, i've been looking for an ironstone pitcher and oddly enough some silver pieces too! have a nice day! susan
I cannot wait till spring when my flower supply is plentiful, sometimes I get so many that I make bouquets for friends that visit. Love your photogragh and that trophy is amazing!

We all love fresh flowers…but sometimes it just can't be so!….There are TONS of articles & tv talk about "everlasting" ones!..Their not your momma's! as the saying goes!…..old sad ones form whenever!
Love your guest room…and your new jug!..The trophy…amazing!
Please don't apologize for using fake plants. I loved Donna's post regarding fake plants. I also stopped using real plants when I adopted cats. I have a huge garden outside that I enjoy, but inside it's fake all the way. http://funkyjunkinteriors.blogspot.com/2011/02/fakin-it-with-fake-plants.html
PS: I have been so inspired by your blog and Funky Junk Interiors that I've decided to start my own blog. Loved the Copy Me Challenge.
do you know anyway to speed up the tarnishing….bought a gorgeous trophy but the gal was so proud of how it "polished right up"!!
AHH!! Those roses are gorgeous!!!
Your (plural) roses are beautiful, and your dad is sweet. But I wanted to remind you that when you're decorating your OWN home, it's for YOU, and if you want faux boxwood, USE it! Love your blog!
Blessings,
Marilyn
the trophy….
BE. STILL. MY. HEART!!
I, too, would love fresh flowers every week. Daisies, maybe tulips. But winter in Ohio or Pennsylvania does lend itself well to boxwood!
Love your website and the great ideas and work you do. Very inspiring.
I like this blog…Fresh flowers
Beautiful flowers. Really, your dad is awesome!
