When shopping for a retail space or event, I used to just buy whatever I liked and felt I could make a profit on. A few years ago, I learned that it was easier to focus my shopping/making/painting efforts around a loose theme. This year, in homage to our new MMS Milk Paint Color, the theme for Lucketts will be “Farmhouse White.”
Kriste and I have been developing the idea a little further, since it’s fairly generic (in the world of antique markets) and also not all that distinct from other booths I’ve done.
As we’ve talked through the theme, some more focused ideas floated to the top. Obviously we’re going to have lots of white and plenty of pieces that have a more humble, farmhouse feel. We want to balance that out with bucolic landscape scenes that we’re going to introduce to the space in a few different ways.
We’ll balance the white with lots of warm woods and texture along with some hints of colors.

I found an awesome dry sink (that can be plumbed) for a great price, because the bottom is a little sketchy and needs to be reinforced. It’s a pretty easy fix and this piece is going to be a stunner!
And we’ve already started gathering and painting furniture. Get ready for lots of Farmhouse White milk paint on pieces…

I know you are showcasing Farmhouse White, but I’d love to see more in Tricycle. Maybe a barn red would go with your farmhouse! Red isn’t your thing, but it does look great with white!

Those wooden clothespins you have used to hang the children’s gowns are beautiful. I’ve never seen pins like that. Did you get those recently, or have you used them before and I never noticed?

I have three of those and just learned what they are. They are wooden jar openers, but they make perfect clamps!
Maybe your husband could make reproductions of them in his shop?

Marian, I thought of you today when I found a lovely Spode creamer in blue and white (if course) at my local consignment shop. As I brought it home, I thought, “Marian would love this little treasure.” I wish Luckett’s were not so far away!

Marion, thank you for the link to “Finding the Quiet” from Jeanne Oliver. I’ve followed you and your story from the very beginning and rely on your authentic perspective. Since it’s Lent, I’ve decided to be intentionally mindful of the repercussions of my comments and conversation. Some advice given included the discipline of being completely still and quiet for short periods in the morning and evening so as to be able to be still and listen. Your mention of Jeanne Oliver’s video struck me that this might be time well spent, especially now. Plus being a new shopkeeper, your “Dear Reader” post was especially timely and has been read and re-read. How are you able to speak into our heads and hearts so well? Finally, a new business in town has begun to carry your paint so it can be purchased locally. All good. Peace on your day.

I think you could sell everything you buy for Lucketts online, except for the large pieces. Buy twice as much!
I would like to see colored painted pieces [not white] next to Farmhouse White to see how that works. Also, a little white always sets off color in flowers. So am curious if it works this way in furniture too.
Hi! I too am in love with those blue bowls. Can you give me info so I can hunt for similar ones for myself (no Lucketts trip for me…maybe one of these years!)? I’d also like to find myself something similar to the silver plated cup holder thingy (can’t recall what they’re called at the moment so that would be another piece of info I would like). Thanks in advance!
The blue bowls are antique salt-glazed pottery, which are pretty readily available in antique stores and on Etsy and eBay. I’m not 100% sure what the cup holder thingy was for! I think it had a clear glass liner in it at one point. It’s just one of those things that came be used for a variety of modern purposes and it’s pretty!
