design ramblings | transitioning styles

In this episode of Design Ramblings, Kriste and I talked about transitioning decorating styles.  More specifically, we were answering a reader’s e-mail, asking how to transition from primitive to farm house style.

I felt immediately drawn to that e-mail, because I really love primitive pieces and am buying them more often and putting my spin on them.

I think they are very well suited to farm house style, so I thought this was an easy transition that could be made by simple changes like thinning out accessories and changing a wall color.

So, that’s what Kriste and I rambled about today…

I hope you have a wonderful Easter weekend with your families!  I’m going to hit the roller rink with the boys, do some antiquing with my mom, followed by a dinner at a nice restaurant with my family.  A day like that will be a nice break from upholstering and painting!

  1. I went from primitive style to farmhouse style about four years ago. It was pretty easy really, I kept most of my primitive furniture and just painted it. All my accessories I sold and used that money to by replacement decor pieces. I love my home now, since I went from really dark painted rooms and furniture to an antique white on everything, I love that it is much brighter.

  2. This could not be more timely for me. I am getting new dark engineered wide plank hardwood floors for the main floor of my house as well as a complete remodel of my kitchen. In the process of packing up my small items I’ve been inspired to not move everything back into their original space but keep only pieces that I really love. Your design ramblings cemented my thoughts into action. This will be a great opportunity for me to surround myself with the furnishings that will really work for my space and not just let them take up space. Thank you!

  3. since Farmhouse, the new craze, is so similar to primitive, I don’t get the problem? lighter interiors certainly could make a difference, as well as white ironstone instead of colored pottery, in the end, it’s all down to good taste, and that never goes out style.

  4. I love all your Design Ramblings videos!! I always learn so much, and this time was no exception. 🙂 Thank you!!

Quick question…would you maybe consider putting your laptop to the side of the screen instead of front and center? I found it to be a little distracting…it almost looked like you were hidden behind it. Just a thought….

    Thanks again,
    Gail

  5. Hi Marion, I just watched a couple of your Design Ramblings and I enjoyed them a lot. I wonder if you have thought of providing microphones for the panel? I could not hear the guest in either of the Ramblings I watched. Also, having some diagrams or photos to illustrate your discussions would also be helpful to view the concepts you are discussing. Love your blog and look forward to more videos.

This week started with the loss of power from a storm.  It wasn’t really the storm that knocked out the power, but the wall of wind that came right before the rain.  It took out trees, limbs, power poles, and made a general mess of our yard and pool.  Jeff
