Decorating a Tree Without “Ornaments”

When I pulled my Christmas decor out of storage a couple of weeks ago, I found this sad looking table top tree. I purchased it a few years ago on sale at Tuesday morning to use in our 1000 square foot condo that was too small for a full size tree. I wanted to decorate it in a fun way this year, but I didn’t want to spend money on ornaments. I also didn’t want to steal any from my full size tree in our family room. It was already dressed in a berry garland and white lights, so I kept those.

I had some upholstery webbing that I purchased at Wal-Mart a couple of months ago, so I thought that would make a nice garland. It was a little too overwhelming for my little tree, so I cut it in half length-wise and wrapped it around the tree.

I had a vintage Christmas tablecloth that was my grandmother’s, so I pulled it out of the buffet to use it as a tree skirt.

I just wrapped it around the base…easy.

I then thought about what I could use for ornaments… I own A LOT of silver, so I poked around the house to see what would work with the scale of the tree. I collected some baby forks & spoons and my hemp twine.

I tied the twine around the handles to hang them from the branches.

I also picked up all of my vintage baby cups and simply wrapped the end of the branches around the handles to hang them on the tree.

I then tucked my thrift store brass butterflies in the tree. I painted them in a creamy white and had them sitting on my desk for the next step. When I spotted them stacked there, I thought they would find a nice temporary home on my little tree.

I topped the tree with the larger butterfly in the absence of a star, bow or angel. Now, butterflies and sterling silver baby items really have nothing to do with each other. This is not a themed tree, it’s just fun.

If you’re at a loss for what to decorate your tree with, try looking around your house. You may have a lot of perfect “ornaments” that are free and totally unique. Happy hunting & tree trimming!

I love, love, LOVE this idea–and not just because I am a foodie. It's grand! Thanks so much for the inspirational photos and words.

Very cute! I love how you took things you had around the house and blended it all together for a beautifully decorated tree.

Actually, my tree this year is wrapped in non-traditional things, sugar. It will be posted on thursday if you'd like to pop over and see it. I like what you did and actually, I tied a spoon that was given to me as a gift on it just like you did. I won't spoil the surprise but I will say that shabby romantic chicks will love it! I DO love what you did with your tree also. No need to purchase expensive things for a Christmas tree. Just "shop your own home"! Darling…

      xoxo,
      Connie

      That turned out sweet.

We just got a free tree, so I'll be scrounging around for ornaments also.

That looks awesome! I think you and I share the same tablecloth…mine was my mothers…I will never give it up! I also think that tables were totally small, back in the day, because of the 2 vintage tablecloths that I own…they barely fit my table, they are tiny (and my table is not that big!) I still use them though!
      Merry Christmas!

Love that webbing! I am so enjoying the contrast of the rustic and refined with the silver and twine upholstery webbing. Thank you for inspiring us!

How cute is that tree….Love it! I have two trees just like that on my screened in porch with white lights and berry garland and it works for me but I have to say I love how you added the webbing.

Very nice. You have just put together a tree for my kitchen/dining area if I had the room!

Well you sure did turn that puny little tree into something very nice. How fun to have spoons in your tree. Oh and I didn't get around to mentioning how awesome I think your bathroom looks. I am in love with that branchy/spiky wreath. If that was a DIY project as well, could you please do a tutorial?
      Have fun! Marianne

Fabulosity!! I'll just you straight up, I'm totally copying that next year for my dining room tree. I have so many old silverware pieces, and I just love the way you have yours attached to the just strapping. Heck, I may even do that for a garland strung above my buffet. That is the best thing I've seen in a blue moon.

Love, love, love it!!!!! I may even add my little silver teacup and teapot ornaments to it.

I have been looking through some of your old posts. You are so creative. I too have made small silverware trees for my old shop. My favorite small tree was when I hung crystal punch cups from white ribbon and lit the tree with white lights.
