Everyone can relax…I survived shopping on Black Friday. The worst places were Kohl’s & Toys R Us, but everywhere else I walked right up to a register. The silly thing is, I waited in a line wrapped halfway around Kohl’s to get 50% off a pack of play dough and Shake ‘n Go Mater. The sales clerk said, “You waited in that line for this?!” “Yes. Yes, I did.” I found some great toys for my boys and nephew at Toys R Us, but I don’t think I’ll be venturing out again in future years. I really don’t like malls, I hate feeling rushed & pushed, and you can get great sales online in your pjs. So, now that’s done…on to the BJ & PB inspired makeover. (BJ & PB…that almost sounds like a sandwich…or am I alone, here?)
When I was growing up, I always remember having this big, brass candle holder in our living room. We would put a candle ring on it when we brought out the Christmas decorations, but it otherwise sat neglected in a corner. It ended up in the garage for a few years and finally my mom brought it to me to sell in the shop. I guess there are people out there who like 1970’s decor and brass, so I put it in the shop. No takers. No surprise. So, I was going to donate it to Goodwill, but then I saw this picture posted by BJ at Sweet Nothings. 
My Dad left this comment: “Just for the record, that candlestick holder came from a small shop in Dongdu Cheon-ni, Korea where I bought it for your mother. There was a little old Korean man who had a small smelter and who collected spent brass from the US Army range firing to make things to sell back to the GIs. We have several brass figurines around our house including a model of the tank I was on. I might get you to “blacken” that one some day. ” I’m keeping that candle holder for sure, now. 🙂

I enjoy learning from my Southern neighbors just as much. I had no idea there was such a think as oil rubbed bronze spray paint until I read about it on someone's blog a few weeks back.. I actually drove to the US just to pick up a few cans . Now I am looking at everything differently. Love the candle sticks!

Funny you did this post because I found some candleholders in my basement that I had bought for possible use for a client at one time. They are a silver/nickel type color and because they were metal I was afraid my black spray paint wouldn't adhere. They seem to work at the moment with Christmas decor. Did you use regular black spray paint or one for metals? I'm thinking after Christmas I may want to paint them to use in my living room redo.

What a cool back story for those candle holders! I have seen them around the discount stores, too, like TJ Maxx and Marshall's, and I'm pretty sure I saw a box set of three of different heights for like $12.99 at Ross. They were pretty cheap dark wood, but spray paint always helps… and maybe sand or distress? It's really cool to hear what they were originally.
I have painted brass candlesticks as well and they get a whole new look. Very nice 🙂 and Happy Birthday to 'Miss Mustartd Seed'!
