When we moved from PA to MN, I sold quite a few pieces that I felt wouldn’t likely work in our new potential home, but I took several pieces I loved and tried to make them work. Moving from a 1940s cape code with smaller rooms and low ceilings to a 13-year-old suburban home with large rooms and 9′ ceilings was a change significant enough to require nudging my style and furniture choices in a slightly different direction. The primitive pieces looked dirty and worn instead of charming. The smaller pieces looked dinky and off. So, I learned from that move that even if I love pieces, it’s just worth selling them if I want to go in a different direction in the new destination. The interesting thing is that I don’t know what kind of house we’ll end up in, but I have sort of a sense, an idea of the direction I might want to nudge my style. So, we’re going to sell a lot on this end. It’ll make the move easier and allow me to purchase pieces that are just perfect for our new home on the other end. Which is such fun for me, anyway!
I told Jeff I was going to be brutal in this move, meaning I was going to be willing to get rid of a lot. He thought I meant my attitude would be brutal or that I might be brutal to be around! I can see how his understanding of my declaration would not be something to look forward to.
We have a few weeks before we move, but I’d like to start clearing things out so that I can have a better sense of how much stuff we have to move. It’ll also give me more space for piles of boxes.
I already have buyers for a couple of pine cabinets and chests of drawers and I’m passing my buffet, two dressers, and a couple of rocking wing chairs along to Kismet, my favorite local consignment store. I’m giving my office desk to my good friend, Cheri. So things are already moving out!
I was going to list these on craigslist and Facebook marketplace, but I thought I would share them with my blog readers first in case anyone was within a driveable distance and interested in any of the pieces. Everything comes from a smoke-free home, but we do have two cats and a dog. You might get a few hitch-hiking hairs, but I do keep our things clean.
Here are the pieces that are for sale so far…
*** Everything is now sold or pending pick-up. Thank you! I will be selling more, so keep an eye out! ***

SOLD Antique French daybed with bed crown, like-new twin mattress, and wood foundation – $250. Bedding is not included. The bed is a traditional twin size and the headboard/footboard are 42″ high at the tallest point. The mattress is almost five years old but has never been slept on. The bed crown is made out of blue linen fabric and cotton toile. The bed comes apart for transport and is in good, sturdy condition.
SOLD Antique pine desk/vanity – $25. This is a pretty typical pine desk/vanity that I’ve been using as a sewing desk. It measures 42″ wide x 30″ tall x 22″ deep. All of the drawers are in working order. Hardware is also antique.

SOLD Antique shutters – $50. This is a pair of antique shutters. We attached them together to hang, but they can be used separately. They will come with a cleat to hang them securely if desired. They measure just under 60″ tall and 41″ wide together.

SOLD Wooden rocking horse – $250. This is a solid wood rocking horse by Restoration Hardware that I painted a few years ago with milk paint. The milk paint is a little flaky (but it doesn’t contain lead.) Horse measures 24″ high x 32″ long and is a useable rocking horse as well as decorative.
SOLD Antique melodeon case – $40. This is an antique melodeon case from the 1800s. The inside is empty. The legs fold up so it’s portable. It makes a great side/sofa table. It measures 44″ wide x 29.5″ high x 20″ deep.
SOLD Antique oak dining table – $75. The top of this solid table was refinished and the bottom painted in milk paint. It measures 45″ in diameter x 30″ tall. It does open for leaves, but I do not have any leaves for the table. Chairs are not included.

SOLD Antique step-back cupboard – $400. This has been a favorite piece of mine for a long time, but I’ve decided to let it go and look for something new for our next dining room. It is in good, sturdy shape and does have doors for the upper cabinet. The hutch does come in two pieces for transport. This is an old piece that does have imperfections like chippy paint, scratches in the paint, evidence of previous layers of paint, etc. It is painted in a custom color of milk paint and measures 44″ wide x 19″ deep x 85″ tall.

SOLD Green art supply cabinet – $200. This is a homemade piece I bought, painted, and put new hardware on a few years ago. A couple of the drawers are a little stubborn, but it’s a great piece for paint, craft supplies, paper, office supplies, etc. It has been used in my studio to hold paint, so it does have some paint on it, which I think just adds to its charm. It is on casters, so it can be mobile. It measures 40″ wide x 19″ deep x 42.5″ tall.

SOLD Rolling metal cart – $50. This is a vintage metal rolling cart with a piece of glass cut for the top. I was using it as a rolling palette, but that wasn’t going to work once I got cats! I’ve been using it as a storage cart in my studio, but it would also make a great garden cart or little potting bench. It measures 33″ high x 30″ long x 16″ deep. The length doesn’t include the handle.

SOLD White bookcase from Birchlane – $300. This is a wonderful storage piece in great condition. It comes in two pieces to move or use separately. When the pieces are together, it measures 65″ wide x 87″ high x 16″ deep. Four shelves are adjustable.

SOLD Antique oak hutch – $200. This is an antique oak hutch with bird pulls from Anthropologie and antique hardware. The two pieces can be used separately as well. It’s a solid piece in good order. The shelves are just a little bit wonky but still work great. When together, it measures 42.5″ wide x 18″ deep x 83″ high.

SOLD Media cabinet/console – $50. This is a nice wood piece that we used as a media cabinet in our PA home and had in our playroom/home gym here. It is solid and in good condition. One cabinet catch needs to be repaired or replaced, but it’s in otherwise good condition. It measures 64″ wide x 18″ deep x 30″ high

SOLD La-Z-Boy Gray Corderoy five-piece Collins sectional – $350. This is a wonderful sectional sofa that we designed specifically for this room. It’s over $5,000 new. Very comfortable. In good, condition with normal wear and tear. Great for a family room/hang-out room. It measures approximately 132″ x 116″.

SOLD Round oak coffee table – $10. Just a basic oak pedestal table in good, solid condition. It measures 41″ in diameter x 17″ tall.
SOLD Vintage metal patio set – $25. This is a vintage metal patio table and four chairs that I bought at the Lucketts Antique Market years ago. It’s in fair condition but does need to be repainted. One of the chair legs is a little bent. The chair is still solid but doesn’t sit level. Has a hole for an umbrella. This is just the table and chairs (umbrella, pillows, etc. not included.) It measures 48″ in diameter.

You can send me an e-mail – marian@missmustardseed.com if you’re interested in any of the pieces. Everything is for pick-up in Rochester, MN unless you want to try to arrange shipping. I will mark pieces as sold when they sell or are pending pick-up. Let me know if you have any questions!

I”m interested in the green rolling metal cabinet and the round oak coffee table. I can take a 3 hour road trip to pick them up if they’re still available. Please let me know!
Yep! They are still available. Let me know if you want me to mark them sold for you and we can arrange a pick-up day/time.
Wait. What? You are moving? Where?
I wish I lived closer! I want everything! LOL Very reasonable prices too, so I’m guessing you won’t have a moments trouble selling anything!
Wow, beautiful pieces! And your prices are great!!
I’m dying over the green art supply cabinet! But I live in Boston. I’m going to look for one around here. Good luck with your move!
I hope your new home has library shelves since you’re selling all of your cabinets? I’m a long time reader looking forward to following your new adventure.
Oh my, this is such eye-candy. Thank goodness I’m on the other side of the ocean, otherwise I would snatch up a few pieces. The green cabinet and trolley especially, but I’ll have to be satisfied with my copy of Where Women Create where they’re on the cover. Congrats to all the happy buyers!
I will take the French daybed
I wish I lived close enough to get any of these! I’m excited for you and your new adventure, and I’m so looking forward to what you do with a new home. Always love your style — and I appreciate that you make a lot of “stuff” always look tidy and intentional.
I checked the distance and I am only 541 miles away ? The antique oak hutch caught my eye, if it had been local, I would have picked it up in a heart beat. Cannot wait to see what style direction you are going to take with your new home and new furniture.
Are the shutters still available? Interested!
Do you plan on selling the bird pic in one of first pics?
Marian, You are so brave! I downsized and moved a couple of years ago. It is not easy. I still have a little regret for selling a few pieces.
I wish I lived closer to you! Come to New England, we have terrific antique stores and antique homes…and of course, we have Brimfield three times a year! Best wishes with your move and house hunting.
I just emailed you about the green art supply cabinet, if it’s still available.
Is the Birch Lane white bookcase still available? I am very interested!
I’d buy every piece if I lived closer. But Ohio is just too far.
Someone is going to be very lucky and very happy for sure!
Wished I lived closer!
But are your really selling the sectional and white bookcase at those prices???!! At double or triple they are still a bargain…
Can’t wait to see where you settle down. Sounds like you are moving in a few weeks. Will you stay with family until you know your final destination?
This is going to be fun for all of us followers. I see another book in the works… 🙂
You are so blessed…
Oh how I wish I lived close to you…. I love all the furniture you are selling…. Best of luck in your new adventure.
I would like to buy the round oak table with the white top. I am local in Rochester and belong to CW.
Hi Marion
I would love to purchase the rocking horse for 250
I have always admired it in the photos.
Please let me know
I’m interested in the wooden rocking horse. I tried to email you but it said that the email wasn’t correct
So reasonable. If only I lived hundreds of miles closer!?
Are you selling any of the Knick knacks and dishes in the China hutch
Yes! I will be selling a lot of smalls, but I just need to get it all organized. I’m trying to get some big stuff cleared out so I have room to work.
Yay!!!!
Hi Marion,
I live in Canada…I have followed along with you for years. Are you selling any of your iron ware? It’s much harder to come across here for sure. If you are, would you be willing to ship some? I would be delighted to own a piece that I know belonged to you. I don’t even care what piece it is…I’d be happy with anything you chose. My hubby and I lost our home last year when the townhouse attached to ours caught fire……so trying to start some collections again. Please email me if you might have something! Blessings to you all as you prepare to move onto the next chapter God has for you all!
Yes, I will be selling ironstone and will offer shipping for smaller pieces. 🙂
I love watching you organize and work! You are pretty amazing, and I always come away energized. I am also verrrrrry glad I live in Texas, so that I am not tempted to purchase. Can’t wait to see tomorrow!
I have followed your blog for several years now. I’m always excited to see what you do to your homes. I bought your book and love it. Love, prayers, and excitement for your family!
I am SO jealous of anyone who get these gorgeous furniture pieces! Wish I lived with in driving distance but Florida would be quite a road trip. Your prices are amazing too, I expected them to be much higher!
You put good prices on your items. Insuring they go quick.
You weren’t kidding when you said you were going to be “brutal!” Wish I lived closer…your prices are so reasonable and the items are so interesting. All I can think of is how much fun you will be having feathering your new nest!
Somehow I missed you were moving! Where to?
Are you leaving the toile fabric on the walls? That is so pretty!
You are serious in getting rid of the stuff. All very reasonable. I will be keeping my eye open for the smalls if you will do shipping. I’m excited for you all and can’t wait to follow your next journey. I know its going to be amazing. You did so much work on this house. The new owners have to be elated.
Your blog just arrived seconds ago and most everything is sold already! Nice for you….sad for me. But I’ll look for notices of ‘small’s and try to get to Kismet for others. Thanks for sharing your lovely things!
You’re getting rid of the ‘chippy’ rocking horse??? He’s been with you for forever!!! Can’t wait to see all the other goodies you post.
This is a big job ahead of you. Good luck. ?
Congratulations on your upcoming move! Please forgive me for this but I’ve learned one must be fast when it comes to all things Marion; If you should decide to sell your fabulous wooden antique water color boxes or Dundee jars, I would love to be first in line! I’m sure some of these may be your treasures, but it’s worth a shot. As a fellow fine artist, you can be sure they’d be appreciated.
I love your home and your style. Are you selling the chandelier in the dining room?
Wow, just wow. I guess I will wait for the “smalls” to be on sale & I would love to have it shipped as I am in New York. To own something of your’s would be an honor & privilege. Kinda sad you are moving, but I know everything you touch turns into something wonderful & charming.
I love…love…love your antique step-back cupboard. I have watched you paint it several times. I wish you would bring it back to Virginia where I live so I could buy it! When visiting you at Lucketts I always hoped you would bring it to sell. I remember your last move and how fast things went …early bird catches the worm. If by chance you end up bringing it back this way, please let me know so you can mark it SOLD : )
Good Luck & Be Safe on this new adventure.
Hi Marian,
I’ve admired / coveted the rocking horse as soon as you posted it.
Can’t find anythin like it here. Is it for sale?
Also, in the front bathroom, first floor, I’ve been looking for a shelf like
yours. Nothing like it. So, if it’s for sale I’m definately interested. It’s
a “rack” with a piece of Ironstone on it. I could use it and would like to
arrange for shipment for it.
Also, do you plan to sell the sailboat?? I’m interested!!
Maybe I should just come to MN and help you pack 🙂
Curious about the daybed I’m thinking it was unpainted wood.. loved it when you posted it some time ago..
I’m very interested in your ironstone, any material, smaller items. I live in Rochester so it’s a easy pick up. Thank you, sad to see your leaving, but we still have your blog.
Wonderful! I will be listing ironstone and smaller items soon.
Is there a blog post on refinishing the oak dining table in your dining room? I love the finish on the top.
The drafting table in your studio… always catches my eye. Any possibility of it being an option for selling.
I am a watercolor artist currently from St. Cloud, MN. We’ve lived in and around Rochester for several of our earlier years. It was fun to think you were in Minnesota. Now you are moving for such a great reason.
If you decide to sell the Aviary blue and white curtains, I will take them!
That is a very good tip particularly to those new to the blogosphere. Short but very precise info… Appreciate your sharing this one. A must read article!
Best view i have ever seen !
