Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Walmart. As always, all opinions are honest and my own.
I’ve worked with Walmart here on the blog for several years, sharing things from their home and craft department, but this time I was asked to share items featured in their fashion department. My days mostly consist of painting, working on my house, gardening, writing, cooking, and taking pictures…so I’m not walking around the house all dolled up. I’m not sharing my OOTD (outfit of the day) because it’s pretty reliably sweats, a t-shirt, and Crocs. I do put some jeans on when I go out and I’ll wear tunics and dresses to church, but I’m just not and never will be a fashionista. But, then I really thought about it and I know that there are many people like me out there and we still need to wear clothes! We still buy clothes and add some cute things to our wardrobe as well as update staples as needed.
So, this isn’t a post showing you the best, most fashionable way to dress. This is a post sharing things I found, bought, and enjoy on Walmart. As with decorating my house, I like to take a splurge and save approach when building my wardrobe. Since Walmart does a great job of balancing price, design, and quality, I’ll peruse their website when I want to add a seasonal article or two or when I need some staple pieces, like jeans and leggings that I can do my work in without worrying about an occasional paint splotch.
The outfit I decided to model for you was this cotton dress with some cropped jeans and ballet flats.

See what I mean? Jean capris with a dress probably isn’t the latest fashion trend, but I happened to have both of them on together as I was trying everything on and I sort of loved how they looked together! The dress is long enough that you could wear it as just a dress or put leggings under it. I always have a cat as an accessory, too. I’m not into modeling, but Esmé is.

I wanted to show the details on this dress because it has the cutest detail on the sleeves and the bodice is smocked. And it’s made of lightweight cotton that is perfect for summer.

The jean capris are comfortable with a nice stretch and true to size. I did wash them twice to soften them up because they were a little stiff out of the bag. They are a good staple jean capri and, for just over $20, they are a good price.
I think the thing I like the best from all of the things I ordered from Walmart were the knit ballet flats. I’ve had so much trouble with shoes since I broke my foot last year. My right foot is now slightly bigger than my left, so a lot of my shoes no longer fit my right foot comfortably. I also need a flatter shoe that isn’t too molded or I can only wear it for a couple of hours. These shoes are cute, comfortable, and fit both of my feet because they have some give to them.

I love these shoes so much that I bought the pointy-toed flats in navy as well. HERE is that link.
I picked out a few other pieces from that I ended up keeping as well and the links are below…

I bought the shirt above to wear with leggings for bumming around the house. I like that it is longer and has an A-line shape. And I got a new pair of Crocs, too. I wear my lined Crocs most often, but it’s nice to have a pair without the lining that I can wear during the summer and outside at the pool. THIS is the pair I bought. After breaking my foot Crocs are the most comfortable shoes for me! I would probably wear them everywhere if I felt comfortable doing it!
You may notice that almost everything I picked is blue and white. When we moved last year, I decided to simplify my wardrobe and stick with blue and white with pops of green and mustard. Most of my clothes fit into that plan, but it was helpful to weed out clothes in other colors. Since I’m fair-skinned, light-haired, and blue-eyed, blue works well on me, it is my favorite color, and it’s what I wear most, anyway. Let’s just make it official. By keeping my wardrobe in that color palette, it means I can mix and match easier and it helps me stay focused when I’m shopping.
If nothing else, I hope this post helps you find a few new favorite things from Walmart that you can add to your wardrobe for summer and that you enjoyed Esmé’s modeling!

All of these pieces are you. I’m jealous you can wear the mustard color shoes. They’re so cute but I have an arch issue so it won’t work for me. Really love the dress.
Wow, so cute! I bought a similar “dress” from Kohls to wear with jean leggings. Just don’t want to show too much of my chunky legs!!
You know, I never even think of wearing dresses over pants/jeans/leggings, but I suppose I should, because it always looks cute. I’m a jeans-and-t-shirt girl and have been my whole life, so maybe I’d wear more dresses if I just put them on over my jeans! I would also be more likely to wear leggings that way! Seems like a win. We non-fashion plates have to look good sometimes!
Yeah, I find it more comfortable and I think it’s cute. It has to be the right pairing, though. I wouldn’t do it with every dress, but it works with casual summer dresses, especially ones that feel too short for me.
Your honesty is so refreshing.
I have had no end of trouble with shoes that fit my feet following a bunion operation nearly 7 years ago. (My foot needed to be rebuilt). One brand I have found to be extremely comfortable are Arcopedico. They wear really well. Don’t be put off by the high price tag. I have some short boots that I wear all through the cooler moths. They go well with skinny jeans or leg ins
I love those shoes!
You always look well dressed to us! I wanted to comment on the Walmart dress you said was “smocked”. It is not smocked, it is “shirred”. Smocking is embroidery worked over careful pleating while shirring is a method of of gathering fabric. Shirring is a very quick technique while smocking…is NOT. I have smocked garments for over 25 years and it is a skill I honed and treasure. If you google the term or look it up on Pinterest you can see the difference first hand.
Thank you for your always inspiring posts.
Yes, you are right. They describe it as a smocked dress, but it is shirred. I had smocked dresses that my mom made when I was younger, so I do appreciate the amount of time that takes!
I also have done plenty of smocking and shirring and know the difference between the two. I have seen a lot of clothing with shirring online recently that are described as smocked.
I need supportive shoes so I buy nothing but Clark’s Shoes. Love them. I wear leggings a lot, with pockets for the phone and long tops. So comfy.
I can’t believe you wore your hair short for so long when you have such beautiful hair and it looks so gorgeous long! 😘
Cute outfits, only thing capris hit me at my ankles. Love them but could never wear them, too long.
I love the dress and I dress mostly in 100% cotton. I have a love.hate relationship with cotton and ironing! So my question is, have you laundered the dress yet and if so how did it fare in the wrinkle and fade department? Thanks!
I washed everything but the dress! I have it in the laundry to wash, though, because I like washing things before I wear them, so I will give a report. I plan to wash it by itself on cold and hang it to dry. Based on the feel of the material, I don’t have immediate concerns about it fading with a few washes, but most dark blue cotton will fade over time.
Yes! Most of us out here have busy day-to-day lives, and want to look nice without breaking the bank. Walmart has really upped their game in recent years with the quality and workmanship of their clothes. By shopping smart, we are able to occasionally splurge on a special item, and still put food on the table.
I love the longer hair on you! I remember a few years ago you did a post on some linen clothes from Etsy. Would you consider updating that too?
Sure! I still wear many of their pieces and usually order 1-2 new pieces each year to add to my wardrobe. I wear their pieces a lot in the summer and when I travel. They are just easy and comfortable and look a bit smarter than sweatpants!
I just want to say that I love that you made a blogpost about WalMart fashions. I will now look a little more closely as I shop for groceries or those things I can’t find at other grocery stores!
You look adorable in that outfit and your hair is so pretty! I’ve never tried Walmart for clothes, but maybe I will have to give them a look.
Cute outfit! I noticed that you mentioned having one foot larger than the other. One of my feet is also larger than the other, along with high insteps on both feet. After many years, I finally found a solution that helped: a shoe form stretcher. It stretches the shoe slightly so that it becomes comfortable. Might work for you and it doesn’t restrict you to a particular type of shoe.
