Making the Most of Every Find

I decided I would elaborate on my bathroom mirror that I posted about yesterday.  It came with this vanity that I found at a thrift store for $15.00.
It had ugly hardware and a horrible cream on blue crackle finish.  I painted it out in Sherwin Williams’ Creme, added glass knobs, and sold it to a client.
The mirror was not original to the vintage vanity, so I kept it in the basement to use later.  Unfortunately, it had the same hideous finish.  I’m not anti-crackle, but this is not the right way to do it, girls.
Ahhh, much better.
So, I got a new-to-me mirror for my bathroom and made money doing it.  When you bring home your thrifty finds, don’t forget to see what might be the “icing on the cake.”

  1. That crackle finish looked like a mirror I did back in the mid 90's. Yeah…it looked that bad (although I think it looked good at the time).
    Your mirror looks gorgeous now.

  2. I'm not a fan of crackle finish either.
I'm glad you were able to rescue that little desk and sell it to a good home.

Love what you did with the mirror.

  3. Jan, Yes, I did some major sanding, but I was not able to get rid of all of the texture from the crackle. Since this was a vintage piece (and the clients were ok with it)it worked, but I if I took on a crackled piece again, I think I would strip it down. Paint over a crackle job is tricky.

  4. What stain did you use on your mirror? I have one thats OAK and I dont like the finish plus its had some minor water damage. Would love to stain it darker as it wouldnt look good painted.
Also, can you fill me in on where to find the Ralph Lauren glazes everyone talks about? Im at a total loss.
    Thank you!

  5. Okay, I NEED to know what color your blue wall is!!!! It's perfect. Of course, so are your amazing makeovers, but my bedroom really wants to be that shade of blue!

  6. Kyla, This blue is one of my favorite colors. I recently painted over it, because it was a little dark for the room I had it in, but I left one wall in my dining room that color. I just couldn't let go of all of it! 🙂

It's called Bluestone and it's by Eddie Bauer at Lowes (I think.) Let me know if you have trouble finding it!

dusting off the sewing machines…

It’s been a minute since I had my sewing machines out.  I had to reacquaint myself with winding the bobbins and getting the needles properly threaded, but I slowly figured it out.  The funny thing is that I needed to wear reading glasses over my contacts to thread the needles
