Before I show you more pictures of the guest room makeover, I have to share some exciting news. A few weeks ago, we took our house off the market and decided to stay in our current home for a few more years. We were still left with the fact that our business needed space beyond our basement (and every part of the house it takes over), so we started looking for a commercial space. Well, I just paid a deposit on a 2,500 square foot, white-walled, wood-floored, big-windowed commercial space about a mile from my home. Is God so good or what? Talk about an answer to prayer. They’re working on a few things to get the space ready for me and then we’ll be moving in! I’ll share pictures and more soon. I’m about to burst to get in there… Eeek!
So, now to the guest room… It is decorated very loosely for Christmas, hence the boxwood garland at the end of the bed.
I also added a bench painted in a custom mixed blue MMSMP. It’s a nice place for a suitcase and some folded towels. (The basket won’t usually be there, so guests can actually use it!)
I moved the beautiful wood 1800’s dresser (found on Craig’s List for $100) back in front of the closet. It’s a small closet and I only have a couple of things in there (I’ve been serious about purging), so I decided to hide it. The furniture feels better in this arrangement. The tall mirror hides the closet completely.
Since the room is small, I’m using an antique stool as a side table. Again, I’ll remove the accessories, so guests can use it for a phone, glasses, glass of water, etc.
I painted a small step stool in a custom blue MMSMP as well, in order to coordinate with the other blues in the room. I wish I had written the recipe down, because I love the color! The new bed is really high, so the step stool is functional in addition to being decorative.
…and it can be used as an ottoman for the grain sack chair as well.
The sweet nest painting above the chair is by Cindy Austin, the woman who painted Eulalie and the other cows in my house.
On the other side of the room is another French chair with its vintage gold upholstery, which actually works with the other golds in the room.
I may not be able to resist the urge to reupholster it, though. You know how I am!
I bought this oil painting from an action and I loved the colors, so I kept it…
I still need to work on the dormer space…
I’m planning on making some pleated balloon drapes out of the raspberry buffalo check and a skirt for the chair. I’m also on the hunt for a cool hanging light or desk lamp.
There are a few more things to do in the room, but I’m really pleased with how it’s coming along!

When God closes one door, He opens another. It is truly amazing how He has solutions that we didn’t see at first, but afterwards they seem so obvious. I am so happy for you! You will feel like you have a whole new house once you get the business side of things moved. 🙂

I think God knows what we need more than what we think we need, even if it isn’t always apparent. I am so happy for you that you will have your very own shop. It must be very exciting. I love your guest room.. it is so inviting and relaxing.

Marian, I SO love the ‘feel’ of this space. The saturated mustard tones teamed with the blues and reds is so warm – perfect for your impending US autumn. And the vintage art speaks to me as loudly as caramel fudge ice-cream!
So interesting that you hid the built-in closet though if the space and function works better, then why not, hey?
Your mini makeover posts always evoke such an urge in me to get onto decorating the semi-finished spaces in my home.

I love the gold tones…I am a “warm/fall” color person and have had to work very hard to infuse “cool” tones into my decor…so I am just the opposite of you. I have transitioned slowly, but loooove the results. Every room needs a mix of “warm” and “cool.” Nice balance! Excellent job Marian!

I love this new transformation of the guest room, very warm and welcoming. I love the red, gold and blue together. And yes we need to go with God’s timing, it usually is what our hearts want and need…like my granddaughter says all the time, let it go…let it go!

Congratulations on your studio space! The guestroom is lovely. It looks tranquil even with the red in the room. I love red and am aiming to place some accents in my (cream/white and mostly sage green living room) living room. The few little red accents I have tried in the pillow patterns and on a clock are a nice complement thus far. The grain sack chair with red striping inspires me to try that look with my grandmother’s chair that we have in the garage. The chair is in bad shape now and we only ended up bringing it home because it did not sell at the estate sale when we cleaned out my parents’ house. I just couldn’t throw it away. Some milk paint and red-striped grain sack might be just the touch to give it new life and incorporate it into my living room. Thanks for the inspiration! Can’t wait to see what you do with the little dormer space.

Looks really beautiful. You could do a pretty little hanging chandelier in the dormer space draped to one side. I like the idea of a skirt for that chair – its beauty is in the back. Really love the cozy feel of the room, perfect for guests!

Two questions for you
A big huge congratulations on finding your business space!! It sounds perfectly inspiring, with the white walls, wood floors, big windows – what a joy it will be to work in. Can’t wait to “see” it! Love the guest room, too…. folks might never leave! 😉
Whoops! My questions didn’t print. My first question is will your basement now become rec room for your growing boys as well as the new space for you to work your decorating magic?
My second question is would your sweet husband please make a pattern for the stool in the guestroom? It would be a perfect place to try out MMS painting techniques.
Congratulations on your new shop! It sounds great. My question is will this be a commercial space you strictly work out of or will it be both a commercial work space and a shop open to the public?
Although I know your original plans where to move and buy some type of farm house and land to expand your business, sometimes its nice to have the two separate. I have known people who had their businesses connected with their personal living quarters and it can have its pros and cons.
This will mainly be a studio space for me, but it will be open for public sales a few times a year, for workshops about once a month and by appointment.

This is such a cozy inviting room. I love the idea of covering up the tiny closet. You can’t even tell it’s there, and decluttering is always good. I was tickled to see the little nest painting too. The blue eggs look so pretty with the other colors in the room. I knew you had shown something of mine today because of the activity in my email and the questions popping up on Etsy! so i came over for a look, and sure enough there was the nest painting.

Oh, all the golds in the room (picture frames, brass lamps, bedding) are coming together nicely! I also like how that vintage dresser looks in the “new and improved” guest room. On the other hand, I must admit that I am not too crazy about the upholstery on that French chair. I am sure you will find a better color and fabric to reupholster it in. 🙂
Also, the nice curved legs of that chair “get lost” against the dark floor… Maybe a small rug under it would help?

the plywood panels within the entrance door could use your magic touch. maybe some kind of marbling over them? they could add depth to the marbling. they scream “plywood” now and that doesn’t do justice to what you created inside.
i think your separate workspace will help you locate the farm you really want instead of one you need to make over. sounds like a good one too!

Today as I began to read your blog I was so delightfully distracted by your redo of the guest room that I almost lost sight of your news! First, my first reaction to your guest room redo is “no blue” and “alright.” Now mind, blue is my favorite color, but it was exciting to see you turn a corner in color in your home. Is this thematic for autumn and the holidays and will you change it up come Spring? Secondly, WOW! Isn’t God great at blowing our socks off!!!!! Where can I find this size buffalo check fabric? I can only find small check patterns and it is driving me crazy! I’ve looked at a couple stores and looked online. I’m guessing I’m missing something in my terminology.

Congrats on your new studio. Glad to hear you are going to teach a class on slipcovers. I followed your slipcover tutorial…it was a huge success! I adapted your instructions to a camel-back sofa ($15 yard-sale find). I spent only $27 on the gray wool suiting for the cover. My family loves the “new” sofa and the resulting newly painted living room. 🙂
