More of the guest room…

Before I show you more pictures of the guest room makeover, I have to share some exciting news.  A few weeks ago, we took our house off the market and decided to stay in our current home for a few more years.  We were still left with the fact that our business needed space beyond our basement (and every part of the house it takes over), so we started looking for a commercial space.  Well, I just paid a deposit on a 2,500 square foot, white-walled, wood-floored, big-windowed commercial space about a mile from my home.  Is God so good or what?  Talk about an answer to prayer.  They’re working on a few things to get the space ready for me and then we’ll be moving in!  I’ll share pictures and more soon.  I’m about to burst to get in there…  Eeek!

So, now to the guest room…  It is decorated very loosely for Christmas, hence the boxwood garland at the end of the bed.

I also added a bench painted in a custom mixed blue MMSMP.  It’s a nice place for a suitcase and some folded towels.  (The basket won’t usually be there, so guests can actually use it!)

I moved the beautiful wood 1800’s dresser (found on Craig’s List for $100) back in front of the closet.  It’s a small closet and I only have a couple of things in there (I’ve been serious about purging), so I decided to hide it.  The furniture feels better in this arrangement.  The tall mirror hides the closet completely.

Since the room is small, I’m using an antique stool as a side table.  Again, I’ll remove the accessories, so guests can use it for a phone, glasses, glass of water, etc.

I painted a small step stool in a custom blue MMSMP as well, in order to coordinate with the other blues in the room.  I wish I had written the recipe down, because I love the color!  The new bed is really high, so the step stool is functional in addition to being decorative.

…and it can be used as an ottoman for the grain sack chair as well.

The sweet nest painting above the chair is by Cindy Austin, the woman who painted Eulalie and the other cows in my house.

On the other side of the room is another French chair with its vintage gold upholstery, which actually works with the other golds in the room.

I may not be able to resist the urge to reupholster it, though.  You know how I am!

I bought this oil painting from an action and I loved the colors, so I kept it…

I still need to work on the dormer space…

I’m planning on making some pleated balloon drapes out of the raspberry buffalo check and a skirt for the chair.  I’m also on the hunt for a cool hanging light or desk lamp.

There are a few more things to do in the room, but I’m really pleased with how it’s coming along!

I am loving the guest room–you have beautiful taste. You’re also kind of getting me in the mood for Christmas. Wonder how my Christmas village would look with little pumpkins scattered about…

  2. I think God knows what we need more than what we think we need, even if it isn’t always apparent. I am so happy for you that you will have your very own shop. It must be very exciting. I love your guest room.. it is so inviting and relaxing.
    all the best, Maryann

  3. Your guest room looks beautiful Marian, that gold upholstery really works in the room. The dresser is beyond gorgeous oh my goodness what a great find. Congrats on your new space, it really does sound like an answer to a prayer.

  4. Congratulations on your new studio space! How exciting! I am really in love with your guest bedroom – it’s so bright, cheery, yet so simple and elegant. And that step stool! I love furniture that serves more than one purpose, especially if it’s painted in such a pretty color!

  5. Marian, I SO love the ‘feel’ of this space. The saturated mustard tones teamed with the blues and reds is so warm – perfect for your impending US autumn. And the vintage art speaks to me as loudly as caramel fudge ice-cream!
So interesting that you hid the built-in closet though if the space and function works better, then why not, hey?
Your mini makeover posts always evoke such an urge in me to get onto decorating the semi-finished spaces in my home.

  6. While I always love your blue decor, I adore this room with its mix of colors. And that rug! Love it so much. A fabulous space.

  7. I love the gold tones…I am a “warm/fall” color person and have had to work very hard to infuse “cool” tones into my decor…so I am just the opposite of you. I have transitioned slowly, but loooove the results. Every room needs a mix of “warm” and “cool.” Nice balance! Excellent job Marian!
Congrats on the new space…trying not to envy but I woke up this morning DREADING all the painting and projecting I have to do in the heat!

  8. I love this new transformation of the guest room, very warm and welcoming. I love the red, gold and blue together. And yes we need to go with God’s timing, it usually is what our hearts want and need…like my granddaughter says all the time, let it go…let it go!

  9. Love the colors in this guest room and how the gold fabrics pull out the gold tones in that wonderful old floor. Congrats on your new space!

  10. I just love the mix of colors you have going on in there! Your guest room is beautiful and so welcoming! You really thought of everything to help make your guests feel comfortable. I love all the boxwood you’ve been using lately too!

  11. Congratulations on your studio space! The guestroom is lovely. It looks tranquil even with the red in the room. I love red and am aiming to place some accents in my (cream/white and mostly sage green living room) living room. The few little red accents I have tried in the pillow patterns and on a clock are a nice complement thus far. The grain sack chair with red striping inspires me to try that look with my grandmother’s chair that we have in the garage. The chair is in bad shape now and we only ended up bringing it home because it did not sell at the estate sale when we cleaned out my parents’ house. I just couldn’t throw it away. Some milk paint and red-striped grain sack might be just the touch to give it new life and incorporate it into my living room. Thanks for the inspiration! Can’t wait to see what you do with the little dormer space.

  12. Marian,
Absolutely love this room – and the colors! Wow!
Especially love the golden yellow quilt – where did you find that? So excited for you with the new space. Productivity will abound!

  13. Marian,
Love this room – and the colors, WOW!
I especially love the golden yellow quilt – where did you find that?
Congrats on the new work space – productivity will abound!

  14. Looks really beautiful. You could do a pretty little hanging chandelier in the dormer space draped to one side. I like the idea of a skirt for that chair – its beauty is in the back. Really love the cozy feel of the room, perfect for guests!

  15. OH Marian,
It is truly beautiful!! God is good, isn’t he?! I am so excited about your commercial space and your lovely guest room. She looks like she is getting all gussied up for a photo shoot. Well I am off…. I need to move our old cast iron bed out and start painting her in a lovely shade of typewriter.

    Have a truly wonderful day!

  16. AGGHHH!!! I CAN’T TAKE IT!!! It’s GORGEOUS!!!! You never cease to amaze. Love, love, love it…all the texture, pattern…perfection!

  17. Having the new business space will probably help fill the need for change and to try out some decorating. I think it will be perfect. Congratulations!

  18. Beautiful….I’m always so happy when I come to your site….beautiful style thanks!
We are building a new home and I get so much inspiration from your site. Happy Day

  19. A big huge congratulations on finding your business space!! It sounds perfectly inspiring, with the white walls, wood floors, big windows – what a joy it will be to work in. Can’t wait to “see” it! Love the guest room, too…. folks might never leave! 😉

  20. Whoops! My questions didn’t print. My first question is will your basement now become rec room for your growing boys as well as the new space for you to work your decorating magic?
My second question is would your sweet husband please make a pattern for the stool in the guestroom? It would be a perfect place to try out MMS painting techniques.

  21. Congratulations on your new shop! It sounds great. My question is will this be a commercial space you strictly work out of or will it be both a commercial work space and a shop open to the public?

Although I know your original plans where to move and buy some type of farm house and land to expand your business, sometimes its nice to have the two separate. I have known people who had their businesses connected with their personal living quarters and it can have its pros and cons.

    1. This will mainly be a studio space for me, but it will be open for public sales a few times a year, for workshops about once a month and by appointment.

  22. Lovely! Wow! Where could I find a rug like that? I love how the colors pull the room together.

  23. CONGRATULATIONS on your new space!!! Everything about it sounds perfect. Your guest room is amazing….what a happy fun room for your guests.

  24. Oh, Miss Mustard Seed, you are amazing. Thank you for your constant – and consistent – inspiration!

  25. Absolutely beautiful! Can you please let us know where you found the curtains/check material? Thanks so much!!

  26. Cool! YAY to finding the new space! It sounds like it’s already cute, I can imagine how great it will be when you get your hands on it!
This is such a cozy inviting room. I love the idea of covering up the tiny closet. You can’t even tell it’s there, and decluttering is always good. I was tickled to see the little nest painting too. The blue eggs look so pretty with the other colors in the room. I knew you had shown something of mine today because of the activity in my email and the questions popping up on Etsy! so i came over for a look, and sure enough there was the nest painting.

  27. Congratulations on the new space. What great news, God is so good. The guestroom looks great. I didn’t think I would ever like more than back in the day when you had the red toille shams but I do. It looks wonderful. The Christmas decorations have me looking forward to decorating for Christmas this year.

  28. That rug with all the colors of the room! I love color but I always want to see the “ground” from which the selections sprung! And you always have it!

  29. guest room looking good…… super news on your new space! You will really enjoy having your business out of the house 😉 and you may not decide to move afterall…..because your new commercial space will be a HUGE hit with customers! Enjoy the fun of designing & organizing it!

  30. Oh, all the golds in the room (picture frames, brass lamps, bedding) are coming together nicely! I also like how that vintage dresser looks in the “new and improved” guest room. On the other hand, I must admit that I am not too crazy about the upholstery on that French chair. I am sure you will find a better color and fabric to reupholster it in. 🙂
Also, the nice curved legs of that chair “get lost” against the dark floor… Maybe a small rug under it would help?

  31. I’m so excited to hear that you’ve decided on your own commercial space. I’ve long wondered why you hadn’t already made that leap. There’s no doubt you’ll make it a huge success. And, yes, God is so good! Congratulations on being exactly where you are meant to be.

  32. Wow, I’m seriously loving how that turned out. Great idea with the dresser. This needs to be in a magazine. Kudos to you.

  33. very nice!!!
i’m expecting to see the new bed frame painted next! [can you resist?]
what about a chaise lounge for the dormer? [lose the table and chair.]
the plywood panels within the entrance door could use your magic touch. maybe some kind of marbling over them? they could add depth to the marbling. they scream “plywood” now and that doesn’t do justice to what you created inside.

i think your separate workspace will help you locate the farm you really want instead of one you need to make over. sounds like a good one too!

    1. I love Laurie’s idea to put a chaise lounge in the dormer area. A great way for guests to relax!

  34. Marian,

Today as I began to read your blog I was so delightfully distracted by your redo of the guest room that I almost lost sight of your news! First, my first reaction to your guest room redo is “no blue” and “alright.” Now mind, blue is my favorite color, but it was exciting to see you turn a corner in color in your home. Is this thematic for autumn and the holidays and will you change it up come Spring? Secondly, WOW! Isn’t God great at blowing our socks off!!!!! It will be interesting to follow your journey via pictures. How very exciting for you and your family. I am so happy for you! Congratulations!

  35. Gorgeous guest room. Love the colors, textures, and layering. Best of luck in your new space…there’s no stopping you now!

  36. Lovely room. Inspirational as always. What about a red transferware platter above the gold chair to tie the red into that corner more? Just a thought…not a criticism. And, praise God for your new space.

  37. Love your happy guest room! I am always inspired by your French style artwork and buffalo checks! I am also very happy for your studio space. Living in Lancaster County is not that far for a future class or two! Can’t wait! Continued blessings!

  38. Where can I find this size buffalo check fabric? I can only find small check patterns and it is driving me crazy! I’ve looked at a couple stores and looked online. I’m guessing I’m missing something in my terminology.

  39. Your guest room is just lovely! Congrats on your new shop space. I miss having my store soooo much. I hope to get in another shop space sometime in the near future. It is my dream that I just can’t seem to let go of.

  40. Beautiful guest room! I love all of the colors and textures. Well done. Also, I’m thirlled for you and your new commercial space. Isn’t God kind? 🙂

  41. Yep. God doesn’t close a door without opening a window. I always pray my window is on the first floor. 😉 Look at you! A mile from home…Your window is on the first floor. God is good.

    And.

    I love the guest room.

  42. Dormer could look really cute with the desk skirted as a vanity, balloon shade and pretty hanging fixture, accessorized as you like…

    1. Cheryl, I thought exactly the same thing when I saw the picture of the dormer, that a balloon shade would be perfect in the space!!

  43. Congratulations on your new commercial space!
can’t wait to see it. I love that beautiful dresser & hiding the closet, very clever! Oh & I just got notified your new book has shipped, YAY!!

  44. I’d like to see a lambrequin & a roller blind rather than curtains which would obscure the light from the window. And a skirt for the chair – perfect..

  45. Man, you killed it with this room!!! Absolutely in LOVE with those buffalo check curtains (I drool every time you show them in a post!!) !!! If you ever decide to sell them- I HAVE FIRST DIBS -okey dokey? Lol! You are a master at decorating and I’ve started to collect Ironstone for our next house (we already have the lot-just have to build!) and I cannot wait to put it all together in a beautiful painted hutch!!! Your style has inspired me so much and I greatly look forward to your pieces! Bravo MMS!

  46. Oh I love your space and use of all those colors….the buffalo check curtains and the ribbon on the wreath….great taste! NOW I need to know where you got that rug….I’ve been looking for a rug with those colors…

  47. Love your colorway: the gold, french blue, and red look striking against the white!

Congrats on your new studio. Glad to hear you are going to teach a class on slipcovers. I followed your slipcover tutorial…it was a huge success! I adapted your instructions to a camel-back sofa ($15 yard-sale find). I spent only $27 on the gray wool suiting for the cover. My family loves the “new” sofa and the resulting newly painted living room. 🙂

    1. Love Love Love that room and I have the same question about the quilt at the bottom of the bed…where did you get it??!!!! Really love it! You are the best!!!
