When I shared the slipcovered recliner yesterday, several of you noted the preview of the new Sixpenny sofa. Today, I’m going to share the entire sofa as well as a review of the style and fabric I selected. (For the sake of full disclosure, this sofa was gifted to me as a part of a partnership with Sixpenny.)

If you remember, I shared the Sixpenny sofa styles and fabric samples I was considering in THIS POST. I ended up choosing the Elias 84″ sofa in Warm Oatmeal, which is a medium-weight linen fabric, for the slipcover. One thing I loved about shopping for a Sixpenny sofa online is their website is so thorough. Each piece of furniture has every measurement you could want as well as details about how the piece is made, materials used, care, and more. I felt like I was able to make a very informed decision with all of the information provided. I also received an e-mail prior to the delivery of my sofa to let me know what to expect from a slipcovered piece of furniture along with links to resources that might be helpful. Sixpenny created an excellent, thoughtful customer experience so there were no unpleasant surprises along the way.
If you’re in the market for a Sixpenny sofa, they are currently offering 20% off purchases of $1000 or more with code WILDFLOWER now through September 7, 2023.

And here is how the Elias looks in our room!

Because we are using the formal living room as my art studio, this den/family room has to do double duty as a living/family room. It’s where we entertain, where we put up our Christmas tree, where I take pictures for my blog, and also where we lounge, play games, and watch TV. It has to be a room that works hard but also looks nice, which can be a tall order, especially for a small room. Since the sofa is a key part of looks and comfort, we needed one that could look dressy for guests and holidays but could work just as well for sick days and movie marathons.
The Elias really ended up being the perfect solution. The linen slipcover can be pressed and the cushions fluffed to make the sofa look neat as a pin or it can be casual and inviting with a few welcoming wrinkles. As someone who has always been a fan of the relaxed yet pretty look of slipcovers as well as the natural qualities of linen, I love this sofa. It’s comfortable but elegant. It’s classic but not old-fashioned. It’s pretty without being fussy. It’s just what I was looking for.

So, let me break down the things I like about the sofa a bit more specifically.
The slipcover itself is well made and has a nice weight that offers some structure to the slipcover but doesn’t feel stiff or scratchy. The seams are all tidy and reinforced and offer a more modern look with the absence of piping or pleats. It’s elegantly simple, making it a slipcover feels timeless and transitional. I think it could work well in almost any style.

I also love that slipcovers don’t have to be perfect. They are forgiving, washable, and, the best part of all, they can be replaced to extend the life of the sofa. When shopping for used furniture, I see so many great upholstered pieces that are in excellent condition, but the fabric has worn or become dated long before the sofa is ready for retirement. Not only can a slipcover be washed and mended over the years as life, kids, pets, and people happen, but it can be replaced. It can even be changed out for the season to completely change the look of a room without having to change out the furniture. It’s such a great solution for the way we live today. You can see Sixpenny’s slipcover selection HERE.

We’ve also really enjoyed the cushion configuration on the Elias. There are two back cushions and two lumbar cushions to offer a wide range of comfort options. Jeff likes to use the lumbar pillow behind his back to provide support. I like to sit a little deeper on the sofa and pull my legs up under me, so I put my lumbar pillow up behind my head or I’ll turn it sideways and use it as a second armrest.

I selected down for the cushions, which means they are squishy and soft. That also means they need to be fluffed, but it just takes a couple of minutes and down doesn’t have a “memory” like foam, so it can always be fluffed back into shape. The back cushions are 100% loose fill, so any indents from pets sleeping on the back or people leaning against them can be fluffed out. We make ourselves nestled and comfortable, and then I whip it back into shape before we go to bed.

To style the sofa for our room, I put an antique coverlet over the back cushions to add a bit of color and pattern. I also put some blue checked pillows from our last living room in the corners. I wasn’t sure how that check would play with the curtains and I put them on the sofa more as placeholders, but I was surprised at how well they worked. I like that the blue in the pillow check is a bit more muted and that the two patterns aren’t matchy-matchy but they sit well together.

It’s been a long time since I had a wall behind a sofa (instead of windows or the sofa floating in the middle of a room), so I had a fun time decorating behind it. I put one of my recent original oil paintings in an antique frame and surrounded it with antique blue and white transferware plates and some European antlers.

I still need to paint the ceiling and walls, but this room is shaping up nicely!
As with all products I review, I will let you know how our Sixpenny sofa serves us over the years. For now, I can sum it up by saying I couldn’t be happier with the Elias sofa we selected.

The room is so homey and inviting. Anyone would be happy wiling away an evening or weekend, in it. I was wondering if you could show a photo without the slipcover, as well, to get an overall feel for the sofa. Thank you, for all the information you provide on products. It’s been a good guide and so helpful.
Marian would you be selling the other Leather sofa that you had there for awhile? If so you can you please let me know what you might ask for it? I might be interested in it for my son thats moving on his own here very soon…
No, that sofa was always intended for Jeff’s office when we found the right one for this room.
That sofa was a very good choice for you, and looks like it just belongs there. I have a question though – have you had any problem with feathers coming out?
I am looking for a smaller super comfy and deep down-filled sofa for my tv room/den. Thought I’d ask. Thank you.
What is the sofa upholstered in under the slipcover? Can you take the cover off and just have it plain like that or must there be a cover? Just wondered.
I noticed the seat cushion is all one piece..All my sofas have individual seat cushions that I change around every so often so one ill not get worn more than the others. Is your seat cushion all one piece ? ?
I acknowledge that I have the curse of noticing EVERYTHING, but what is going on with that front, split corner of the sofa next to the newly slipcovered chair? Also, it looks like that side of the slipcover doesn’t reach all the way to the floor? I hope they pre-wash that linen in HOT water, because there is zero room for any shrinkage! Otherwise, the sofa looks great !
I am sorry, the sofa just looks terrible to me. I always really like your decorating choices, but this one is a fail for me. This is just my opinion. I don’t mean to be mean🫤
I Love it all Marian. YOU HAVE BEATIFUL TASTE!! I too love slipcover sofas. I have 3 different ones in my home. I bought mine many years ago. One is oatmeal washed linen like yours. Another is ivory matelasse in my formal living room and my loft has ivory duck fabric. They are all down and so comfy. I love your six penny sofa. I never heard of this company until about 5yrs ago. I love all their gorgeous linen fabrics. I think your sofa choice is perfect for your cottagey style and I absolutely LOVE EVERYTHING you are doing in this new home. How fun it must be to create your dream home slowly so it evolves into your perfect haven. Thank you sooooo much for taking us along with you. You will always be one of my fav bloggers!!!🥰😘🥰
Did you actually tell her you dont like her sofa?? I do not understand what would actually make you write that?? Its her sofa. Her home. Her choice. Didnt your mother ever teach you manners?? Just because someone has an IG acct doesnt give people the right to be rude. Not sure why you would ever think thats ok.
Marian doesn’t hesitate to say something isn’t to her taste or something isn’t working. Why can’t we?
It really is okay! It would be boring if everyone loved the same things. It’s a win for me and that’s what matters most since it’s in my home. 💙
This sofa and the cover look home made, and not in a good way. It seems a little twisted and the corner near the floor is like an ill fitting tshirt that you constantly have to pull down. I just don’t like it. You noted that you got this free, did they give you a second?
Honestly, I could’ve ironed the corners to make them lay flat, but the slightly rumpled look is homey to me, like a linen tunic I would wear without ironing it first. But, that’s just me. I don’t feel like everything needs to be pressed and starched.
I love the style of the sofa, and it looks really cozy, BUT I think you could make a better slipcover. I agree that things don’t have to be absolutely perfect, but that uneven front edge and stretched-too-tight corner do take away from the overall look.
That is styling more than the fit or craftsmanship. I could definitely adjust it and iron it to make everything lay flat and even, but I don’t want to feel like it has to be babied. I’m quite content to let it be a little rumpled. To me, it looks inviting and is a part of the charm of slipcovers.
Of course. You are the one who lives with it, and if it doesn’t bother you, that’s what is important.
It all goes together well – the fabric, pattern, texture, plates and antlers. Can’t wait to see what else you do. I have a club chair that we have had for 20+ years. It is well made and the most comfortable. I wish I had bought two. Anyway I’m going to tackle a slip cover to cover the worn out fabric. Hope it turns out as well as your chair.
Instead of focusing on the angle of a hem, or the stitching of a corner, I am going to say that stepping back, this room looks like it has been curated over years, instead of mere months. While your kitchen is a work of art, I am really more drawn to this, your family/living room. I think it’s the combination of the warmth of the wood beams and the color of the curtains. Together they create a warm, beckoning feel. Combined with your art, wall hangings, lamps, books and flowers, it is a room that invites conversation, book reading, movie watching, or simple relaxing. There is a cohesiveness that I reach for in my home that still eludes me, even after years of reading your blog (as well as others) and studying the IG posts of rooms that call to me. I am patiently waiting for the fireplace posts…!
We all have different tastes and styles. What matters to me in buying furniture which is usually an expensive purchase is the craftsmanship, comfort and fabric wear. I guess that’s why my last two sofas have been leather. It’s easy to clean and the patina of leather looks better with age. I do love linen, but you have to accept that linen will wrinkle and that’s part of its charm. If you are over fussy and don’t want to be bothered, it’s probably not the choice for you. With that being said, I think your new sofa fits your style perfect. Also, love what you did with the recliner you bought. You really transformed it!
I love this sofa, and it looks great in your room. I noticed on their website that they have several kinds of linen. Which one did you get, and which color?
