fluffy full wreath hack | Christmas decorating

As I shared last week, Christmas decorating this year is about doing the best I can.  It’s about enjoying what I can do and letting go of what I can’t.  And, I have to say, it’s felt pretty good so far.  It’s been slow.  It’s been spurts and starts.  But, it’s been happening at a pace that works for me this season, making it manageable and joyful instead of stressful.  One of the things that inspired me last week was a couple of wreaths I found when I was picking up some lights from Walmart.  Both wreaths were a little on the thin side, but the texture was realistic.  I bought them because I had an idea to use them to make a full, fluffy Christmas wreath.

This is the result…

The best thing about this Christmas wreath “hack” is that it doesn’t require any tools or materials.  Just two wreaths that could use some beefing up.

THIS is the flatter wreath with soft, feathery needles.  I loved the texture and color of this wreath.  It looks realistic, it’s a generous 24″, and it’s under $25.  I actually ended up buying two more of these wreaths because they are flat enough to fit between my front and side doors and the storm door.  I tried to fit my new fluffy hacked Christmas wreath on either of those doors and the storm door wouldn’t close!  And oversight on my part.  So, I’m using that one inside and will customize this flat wreath so it will fit and work with my aesthetic.

Anyway, THIS is the wreath with the spiky needles and pine cones.  This one is also 24″, under $28, and also looks realistic.  I like how the needles are a little darker and bluer than the other wreath.  The texture and colors will play nicely together.  Even in the store, I started fiddling with the branches to combine the two wreaths and I knew it would work well.

Making this fluffy, full Christmas wreath out of two wreaths isn’t a complicated project, but I think that’s what makes it a really good project.  It’ll take about five minutes or less ad you don’t need any tools, materials, or experience with a particular medium or technique.  You just need these two wreaths and your hands.  Here’s a video showing how I tucked the two wreaths together to make them one fluffy, full Christmas wreath…

Not only do I love this wreath because it’s full, fluffy, and looks realistic, but also because it looks good without any decorations.  It’s also a great wreath to have hanging on a door or in your house all winter.

For those who might ask, because I know it’s a stunner, THIS is the door knocker I bought and I just love it.  I’m going to repaint all of the exterior doors this spring, but I couldn’t wait to have my dad hang this rabbit door knocker.

If you know me, you know I can’t leave well enough alone, so I will show how I customized this wreath in another short video this week…

It looks beautiful! You have such a good design eye. We have the same problem with our exterior storm doors. There’s hardly any space between the main and storm doors. I found some beautifully decorated twig wreaths that work perfectly. Please describe your house to me. I know it’s one level but is it more modern or would you say more traditional?

It’s a bit of a hybrid to me. It has some very classic 1970s elements like a harvest gold sink, blue bathtub, and slab doors, but I think that more of the elements, like the brick exterior, chair rail, 8-over-8 windows, etc. feel more traditional to me. We are definitely taking the house in a traditional direction.

On my, LOVE the knocker…..but $31+ to ship!! 🙁

Your wreaths re-do’ are great! My doors with storms have a good amount of space so my fluffier wreaths fit perfectly.

Oh, I know. It’s coming from England, so it’s a bit more than US shipping. I looked around at other brass doorknobs, though, and most of the ones I liked ran around the same price as this one including the shipping, so I was good with the overall price.

Brilliant! This wreath is gorgeous on your door, especially with the brass knocker. I will have to try the tucking technique for next year’s Christmas wreath.
Thank you for this wonderful, and super easy tip. 🙂

I love the wreath! The second version looks so “you”. What a great way to make it your own without breaking the bank. I love the doorknocker too! The funny thing is, I got a doorknocker last Christmas and haven’t put it up because I was going to repaint our door. Now, I think I need to put it up anyway. Love it!

Beautiful wreath Marian! Love how you beefed it up! I made your dry sliced oranges. And friends that were at my home loved it. They are inspired to make them also.

Are you the blogger who went back to the antique store to buy the rustic blue sled but found it sold? As it happened, the blogger’s husband bought it for her! I’m looking for pictures of that sled.

I found the same flat wreath at Walmart several weeks ago, I love the texture and it looks so real! I was sad that they only had one.?

I did the same thing with two Eucalyptus wreaths from Amazon this summer. I like that you added the Cedar sprigs to the Scotch pine. Nice juxtaposition in textures.

Love the wreaths and the door knocker is divine. Thank you for the lovely post.

What a great wreath “hack” and the end results are beautiful on your door! I went into a gift shop last week and bought some beautiful heavy weight Christmas wrapping paper. I told the saleslady that I was going to use it for table runners, and she thought that was a brilliant idea. I told her I couldn’t take all the credit, that I actually got the idea when I went to a shop one day and saw a beautiful runner on the table and then found out it was paper!

I had the same problem with our screen door. I purchased a double magnetic hook for glass and it works like a charm. I now hang my wreath on the screen door rather than the inside door. Love your wreath and everything you do. You have a special gift that I admire!

      • Laureen Watts

My thoughts exactly, but my gifted real wreath was too heavy. Fortunately, if fit between the doors.

Thank you for the wreath hack. The two together are beautiful and your bunny door knocker is perfect.

I ordered the wreaths from Walmart and was so happy I did! They really do look good together and I added some of those popular bells (That we are seeing everywhere this season!) from Amazon. It looks amazing and will last forever.Thank you so much for the idea!!
