Another “Crafternoon” & More Stuff for Lucketts

Back in August, I spent an afternoon crafting or a “crafternoon” with Emily

…and we made a herringbone cork board for her jewelry.  (She’s such a cute, teeny-tiny thing, isn’t she?)

Well, last week she asked if she could come over again.  This time, she wanted to make a place for her sunglasses out of some lace and a cheap frame.  She wanted to paint the frame a minty color and I just happened to have just the shade in a new paint product I was testing out (I’m just full of secrets…)  So, we painted and distressed the frame and then stapled some lace on the back.  The lace Emily brought was a little shiny and wasn’t open enough for inserting sunglasses, so I went through my fabric stash.  I found a perfect antique eyelet lace that was from the bottom of a petticoat.

And ta-da…

It was a quick, simple project and I think it turned out so cute.

In Lucketts fair news, I started working on some things last week, including this French rocker (upholstering the back)…

…and I started painting some small pieces…

I also found some more furniture!!  I know it seemed like I had a lot when I showed my stash, but I needed a lot more furniture.  I was starting to sweat it a little bit.

I bought this amazing desk/vanity…

Oh…the legs, the details…

I’m actually keeping this one, but I’m selling something else out of my house to justify keeping something!  I also bought a chest on chest…

…and three other dressers!  I’m excited to start working on them…and a couple of them need a lot of work.

They’ve come to the right place.

  1. That desk is gorgeous! I just love that rocker and can’t wait to see it completely done.

  2. Love the vanity, it’s amazing. The sunglass craft project is also really cute, what a great idea and mint is so popular right now 🙂

  3. That desk/vanity and chest are just lovely Marion! I would want to keep that one too!
Looking forward to seeing you in a few weeks- maybe I will just bring the OSMO with me then!

  4. Chest on chest….actual term, or just descriptive? I might be called small chest, if you know what I mean, actually and descriptively…..

    1. Lol…yes, it’s an actual term, as the reader below said. It’s a highboy (tall) dresser that looks like on chest of drawers stacked on top of another.

  5. A “Chest on Chest” is a furniture term used to describe a case piece usually used in the bedroom for holding clothing. As opposed to a “Chest of Drawers”, which is flush along the sides and front, a Chest on Chest literally looks like a small chest is sitting on top of a larger base chest. Chest on Chest is a technically correct term used in the furniture industry to describe a bedroom casegoods piece. Can you tell I spent 40 years in the furniture industry?

  6. This stuff is going to look awesome! And the furniture you find to begin with looks to be in good repair usually! I tried my hand one day browsing and found broken down, smelly, expensive stuff–ugh! You are so talented–I wish I could buy straight from you some pieces for my home:) And stuff I would think has too much detail you highlight to perfection!! Can’t wait to see afters–PLEASE!!

    1. Kristin, you are right on! Stuff I find even goodwill wont take! And their stuff is old icky smelly too. At least in our Goodwill! Marian where do you get these great pieces? I wouldn’t paint that gorgeous piece, but Marian probably will and it will look fantastic!

  7. Such beautiful pieces, can’t wait to see some afters!! I started a chair makeover last month and got stuck when I got to reupholstering the back. I couldn’t reuse the cardboard type backing that had been there and I can’t seem to find the right sturdiness that still can bend with the curve of the seat to finish the job. Since you’re reupholstering the back of that beauty I though I’d ask if you had any advice for me 🙂 Hope you have a restful Sunday 🙂

  8. Oh Marian, that rocking chair is gorgeous and that vanity has me clutching my pearls!! oh my goodness that is beautiful. That paint color on the frame is so pretty too. You really found some amazing pieces.

  9. Oh my! I love the minty green! It’s heavenly, so springy and just delightful. The sunglass holder was is super cutie and I can’t wait to see all the loveliness you are preparing for Luckett’s fair.
🙁 Sadly, it’s a hike from Tampa but I can experience it through the incredible photos you share.
    Cheers to you and yours,
    Therese

  10. adorable concept for a sunglasses holder! turned out so cute! love that she chose mint! one of my fave colors…I just painted a small cabinet for my craft room in mint. can’t wait to find out more about what product you used!

  11. Okay Carfternooner…you’re inspiring me to stay home and paint! Though my man is taking me to a matinee at the local playhouse…the Odd Couple…I think I need to laugh and paint tomorrow! You’ll still be inspiring me!

  12. Don’t blame you! I would keep that one and no one would ever get it away from me!

BTW, I finished your book, and really enjoyed it.

  13. The vanity dresser is a beautiful piece. I hope you can salvage the burled wood sections along with the detailed moldings.

  14. Marian I purchased the blue dresser from you last year at the Lucketts market. I am looking for a double dresser do you have anything like that? If so can you tell me what color you are painting it. I need one for a rental house. Look forward to hearing from you.

  15. Crafternoon! I LOVE it! I always knew there was a term for what I did! Thanks! By the way, the furniture looks great! Can’t wait to see what you do to it! I’ve been looking for a piece to go in my dining room. I guess a sideboard with storage all the way to the floor as opposed to a buffet which has legs and not so much storage. Keeping my eyes open the “Miss Mustard Seed” way!

  16. When I saw that gorgeous desk, I thought she can’t get rid of that beautiful piece. Loved it when you said it was staying. It is lovely. Anxious to see it in all of it’s glory!

  17. love the desk/vanity. It is beautiful. is the wood burled? I hope you leave that….i have such a thing for burled wood and/or bird’s eye maple. What a nice fluke to God’s natural beauty…I just love them.

  18. Oh, the wood grain in that vanity is so beautiful. Please think twice about painting it!

  19. Good Sunday evening! Read your blog every time you post, rarely due to lack of time, leave a comment.

The sun glass frame y’all made is so adorable and can’t wait to see what you do with the dressers! Will be magical as always!

    Have a wonderful new week!

  20. Oh my gosh, Marian. I need to come to YOUR town to shop for furniture pieces. There’s no way I’d find things that nice where I live. I’m a little jealous… in a good way 🙂 BEAUTIFUL
pieces. Can’t wait to see what you do with them… which will be wonderful I’m sure.

  21. Love the sunglasses craft. I love the desk you found…where do you find these gorgeous pieces? The french rocker too…there aren’t many things like that in Ohio…

  22. Love the chest on chest!!! I bought one recently ~ a hepplewhite style?? But I needed a “shorter” version so I removed the top section. Painted it ASCP Provence and LOVE IT! Any ideas on what to do with the top portion??
If I don’t have a blog is there a way to post things I have done on your Friday Linky Party?

  23. Hi Marian,
Where do you find most of the furniture you buy to paint and re-sell? What is your strategy for “increasing your stash?” (Tag sales, Craigslist, Estate Sales, Thrift Stores, etc.)
    Thanks!
    Rhonda

  24. The May issue of Country Living came in the mail today and the cover has Miss Mustard Seed style written all over it. Inside I found quite a bit of The Lettered Cottage and a good helping of Funky Junk. Love the way my favorite bloggers are transforming home decor in such an affordable way!

  25. The chest on a chest is a shape I am always on the hunt for. A girl can dream…….can’t wait to see what you do with it!

  26. That is a beautiful piece of furniture. As much as I love painted furnitue, it would be very hard to paint over that beautifully grained wood! What a great find!
