I get a lot of e-mail with design or technical questions about furniture or room makeovers and have even had a few people suggest I offer design consultations. I have thought about it, but I really felt like I work best when I can physically feel a space, but maybe I’m wrong.
Wanna be my guinea pig? I am offering a free full room consultation for one of my readers, so I can test some things out. I have no idea what the consultation will look like, but we’ll find out together. I promise that I will give your room a lot of attention and thought.
So, if you’re interested, simply leave a comment letting me know which room you need some help with and what the main challege is. If I choose your room, you will have to provide pictures, measurements, what you have to work with, and what your skills and budget are. You will also need to answer some questions about your style and space, so I can put together a design that will fit you, your family, and your budget.
So, onto the next thing on my mind. I think we’ve all had that thought…wouldn’t it be fun to have your own design show? Come on…we’ve all explained to an imaginary camera why we’re pin-fitting a chair with a drop cloth, right? Am I alone in this? Anyway, when it comes down to it, I do not have any desire to have my own show, but it’s still fun to dream about. Well, I think this season of Design Star has totally squashed any joy in even dreaming about the prospect.
Have you been watching?
The amazing Candace Olsen, who can do no wrong when it comes to interior design, has openly made fun of some of the designs on the show. Wouldn’t you just die? The usually sweet and friendly Vern Yip, from Trading Spaces and Deserving Design, comes off as unnecessarily mean to the contestants, especially to those who were voicing their concerns about their team dynamic in the guy/girl challenge. There was one designer with…let’s just say a very strong personality. She basically pancaked anyone who got in her way and celebrated it.
Now, I understand that you need to have a thick skin in certain fields and any profession in the arts requires that. That said, I was really disappointed when the judges said that interpersonal skills did not play into this competition at all. Excuse me? You’re going to send someone with a steam roller personality into the homes of HGTV viewers to makeover their rooms? I think it’s foolish to dismiss the fact that someone cannot work well in a team, while actually encouraging the other designers to dish it out. That may make for dramatic television, but who wants to work with a jerk?
I saw that these contestants are not only asked to show their design talent, but they are also expected to be petty, rude, back-biting, and pushy. No thanks. I’ll just stick with writing a blog and I’ll daydream about something else.
What have you thought of the show so far? Would you want to compete?

i actually watched the show once before and felt the same way and hated it. i didn't watch it again. there is no need to be just plain mean in anything we do in life. there are nice ways to say the things we want to say.
also, i would love to have my foyer worked on- it is a very very very small space, like 5 x 5 maybe? i redid it in late winter, but i am still not feeling the love i want to for it. 🙂 my budget is limited to less than 500 but you know i can do most of the work myself.
Not sure if I would want to compete, but from what I know about e-design is that your client sends you photos of the room. A you can do a moodboard that has suggestions of the things to use in the room, and placement from the photos. It's done all the time. It should be easy for you. 🙂 go ahead DO IT.
Well, as for the room redo, I think you would do great. I think you are beyond talented and can't wait to see what you come up with.
As for design star. I haven't enjoyed one designer since David. No one else really seems to have as much talent. And last year's winner…uh, no! This season, I haven't seen the talent yet and as for Nina's personality, it sucks and she really isn't nearly as talented (in my eyes as a possible viewer) as she thinks she is. I think they will keep her around for a while because the folks seem to watch the drama, but fortunately, she won't likely win.
I don't watch a lot of TV, and I don't watch ANY reality TV for that reason. It is disappointing to hear that Design Star has gone the way of the nastiness of Idol type shows. I don't like what this is teaching our young people. That it is okay to be rude and cutting. Certainly some people are not cut out for the careers they think they want, but there must be a kinder way of letting them know. I'll stick to blogging and reading friendly blogs.
I would love the opportunity to win your design consultation! I have a family room that needs some creative advice. It has great floors and lots of windows and light. I'm going for a rustic farmhouse lakeside feel. I have an awesome old sideboard that we are using for a tv stand that needs to be stripped or painted and I don't know which way to go. The room also has a fireplace wall that needs some architectural detail. We also have our computer area in one end of the same room and I need to figure out a better solution and positioning for the work area. Lots to do and I can't figure it all out. I would love your design direction!
I used to watch Design Star, but I stopped when the judges started being so rude. I'm shocked at some of the things that the normally cordial Vern said to designers. He was down right hurtful. Design is like art, it's subjective. What pleases one person may not be liked by someone else but that doesn't mean it's wrong.
I think you should go for the email consultations! You've got great ideas!
I haven't been watching this season of Design Star. I'll have to start recording it!
I'd love to be a guinea pig in your room design adventure! I'd pick my master bedroom I think. I want it to look high-end and glamorous, but it's just kind of blah right now. I feel like almost everything I buy for it, I soon end up hating. I'd love to get on the right track!
So I haven't seen the show and now I'm thinking maybe I don't want too! Oh well, we can be great without them!
Speaking of great I love all your ideas and cant wait to try all your stuff and I would LOVE some help in my formal dinning room/library! It's a mess! I refurnished a beautiful hand me down table and reappolsted the six chairs that match it. My husband also built two matching 8ft. bookshelves and lets just say he was a beginner…
You are right, but I am still going to watch. I could never do it, I'm too nice. If having your own show means being rude and self-serving, then no thanks. I thought designers were supposed to serve others. Silly me! I love your comment about HGTV sending someone into a home that will roll right over them. I never even thought about that, but you're right! Lisa~
Hey there Miss Mustard Seed, I think you would do so well in design consultation ! As far as the show goes, I couldn't agree more. You totally nailed it. It seems as if the show is looking more for ratings, and less for good all around designers (personal skills included!). And where is Clive ? He was a little dramatic, but still a decent host. You're right, the show lacks the umph it used to have, but I confess, I will still watch !

You would be a fantastic source for those who cannot visualize – good luck.
I have watched every season of Design Star – and enjoyed for the most part – until now! I told my DH the other night "I'm sorry, but I cannot watch this show anymore." Mark Burnett may be good at The Apprentice, but he needs to hand back over Design Star. The first show did not interest me with the changes to the show or host. I miss Clive! I forced myself to leave it on for the next show but could stay focused or care the least bit. Very sad, since it was once a fun show to watch.

I'm not liking design star this year. I hate all the modern design. I don't like how mean some of the contestants are and I miss having at least one person who is not a "professional" but just has gifting and ability. O'well.
my living room. I know what my style preference is and what I like when I see a finished room in a magazine, blog, tv, etc. but I do not apply my style to my rooms. The living room is where we spend most of our time and I would like it to be comfortable and reflect our family's personality and style.
I will be your guinea pig! I need help with my dining room. I know what I want to paint the walls, but the furniture and the chairs…I just can't decide what to do with them.
Not in a million years! I believe the contestants are talentd but chosen based on "reality" TV standards rather than "design" TV. Who wants to see that over and over again! Watched it one time this season. May not watch it again.
Very good job on your post! Very interesting! Good luck with the
e-designing! I've thought about it as well! We'll see!
If my memory serves me…LOL, I do believe that a contestant was eliminated for not having good enough team spirited skills..I think it was the season that Kim Myles won. I would NEVER survive the critisim..Design is a very personal talent to me.
Well, we don't have TV, and I used to watch HGTV and TLC at my mom's house, but they don't have cable anymore, so I'm outta luck. But years ago, when I still watched, things were already trending that way. They're WAY more about the personality than the substance of the design.
I would LOVE to have you take a look and give suggestions on our sorely neglected cave of a master bedroom. 🙂
While I love design and have friends beg me all the time to "help them decorate"…I like doing things on my "own" time…no, "I want it like yesterday!!!"
However, I would love to work with you on my younger daughter's new room…she is inheriting her big sister's old room now that she is moving into her first apartment. She wants the cool, hip teen room but mom wants it to still blend with the rest our our home! The one challenge the room has always presented is the two dormers with windows…narrow and uninspiring.
I agree with what you said. The "steamroller personality" gal seems rude and offputting. I've only seen one episode so far, but I think it lacks depth and doesn't really show true design talent.
And I think you'd do great too, but that environment is really toxic. Your sweet personality shines through on your blog. It seems like a good match for you 🙂
Oh, I wish I could win a redesign from you! The room I have to work with is a Greatroom with real decorating challenges. But I won't even be there until mid-August and I don't think you'd want to wait that long for measurements. Do you have design consultations available for purchase yet?

I missed last Sunday's episode of Design Star and sounds like I didn't miss much.
My room challenge is going to be my son's bedroom. He is off to college this fall and that room needs an update after he leaves. I still want to keep it somewhat masculine because he will be back for holidays and summer vacation (hopefully) but I also want to incorporate some of my vintage pieces (my son is an excellent photographer and I want to display some of his photography with some vintage cameras). This room will also be able to serve as a guest room while he is gone.
So there you have it…my design challenge!
Have a great weekend.
Jane
I have some issues with this seasons Design Stars, but I don't want to admit they have lost something.
Anyways, I do have a couple of rooms I am struggling with and just can not get inspiration for. One is a very small guest room and the other is the paneled kids room/basement area. Any help would be great.
Looking forward to seeing your first design consult!!
Love your eye for mixing items and textures!
I feel the same way about the show!!! I was so shocked and disheartened at the way the judges(( designers I admired)) acted and treated the contestants. I believe that you should always treat others as you would like to be treated!!! Especially when in the role of mentoring!! I see this on so many shows and have to turn the channel!!!
blessings~
I would love to re-do our kitchen. I have done other rooms in our house, and I have ideas…and love everything (especially the painted cabinets) I see all over blogland. I'm terrified of the kitchen, though…paralyzed! Help!
Mary
I haven't tuned into the show this year but you gave a good description.
I think e-designs are the new thing and you have a great eye for detail. Good luck and I will be tuning in to see what you do!
Londen
I haven't been watching the show this season. I have never really gotten in to it because I have never liked their designs. Too "out there" for me.
I am sick of all the drama too. I wish there was a show that highlighted one's character as the most important thing.
🙂
blessings!
I think you'd be fabulous at performing an e-consultation. I can't wait to see how it goes. 🙂
I've been recording & watching Design Star and you're right. I was shocked at Candace Olsen and Vern and even Genievive {when she was pointing out that all that dude with Tommy Bahama had was the wood ferns}. I think it just makes for good TV. Who knows, maybe they're all that snarky in real life and it's just been edited out – OR – it's what they've been asked to do. *shrug*
I think they deliberately kept the steamroller girl for the same reason – – good TV. Them's my thoughts.
And if *I* had a TV show, it'd hafta be on "What not to do" or "how to kill a design in 2 seconds flat" 🙂
I love your ideas and I would love some "virtual" help with my living room. I read all the decorating blogs and look at magazines but I can't seem to apply it to my home and make decisions.
Help!
Haven't watched this season. Didn't even realize it was on again.
I have a kitchen I could use help with! Scary I know. But I have granite and stainless appliances from previous owners I need to work with. I need help with cabinet and wall colors and deciding on which doors to remove and which to add glass to. Oh and an eat in area is attached. I am confusing myself with all the paint chips!
I had to make a comment about Design Star!! I am totally disappointed that Vern turned vicious and seems to be the majority leader. Candice and Genevieve hardly get to say much of anything! Candice can design circles around the two of them!! Okay…enough rambling!
I believe you could do a wonderful job as design consultant and good luck to the winner! I wouldn't have the money to fulfill your wonderful ideas so I have to pass.
I haven't watched this Season of Design Star but I've watched a couple of the past seasons. It seems like they're trying to force it to be more dramatic, which unfortunately means it's less about good design. I had a few of this season's episodes DVR'd, but I think I'll just skip it.
And, I would love for you to consider my family room for a consultation (ha ha ha, I just accidentally wrote "confrontation". I guess I was still thinking about Design Star). Anyway, my room is an add on so it has brick walls and it has an 80's bar right in the middle of it. I know you could work your magic on it 😉
Oh, pick me, pick me! My master bedroom needs serious help! After building our home 6 years ago, I have spent the last few years focused on the "main" parts of the house, and the bedrooms of my 6 kidlets. Just in the last couple of years have I discovered the "style" that is me, and have been getting my home to reflect that style. For whatever reason, though, I'm nervous to start my master bedroom, I know what I want, I know what I want it look like, and I know how I want it to feel, I just don't know where to start! I read lots of design blogs, but yours is the only one on my homepage sidebar:) Even my Houzz account has more pix from you than any other designer:)
I've been TV-less for years now, so I've never seen the show. I can't say it sounds as if *I* would like to participate, but I'm sure it would be fun to watch.
As for the design consultation…I would LOVE that! Last fall we had to consolidate our family room/home office space in our basement. It is dull, dull, dull, and not very inviting. It's TV space, computer space, and play space all in one, and serves none of those purposes well! I wish it were more family-friendly and PRETTY!
I agree….HGTV Design Star is turning into Real Housewives saga…yuck. I love Vern but he scared me this last episode.
I think your design expertise would be a blessing for my distraught home office. I have never been able to figure that room out. Please help!
There is definitely some drama on Design Star. I love the design part, but I think they should definitely consider each person's ability to work with other people.
Amy
I would LOVE for some help with my den…it's a lump of coal, for sure!
As far as Design Star goes, I do this because it's joyful..to work with other people and create. It seems all of that is down the toilet on the show. Vern can be mean – kinda surprising.
I would love to have some help with my master bedroom. It is pitiful. The house was built back in 1987 and I still have the original border and wallpaper in the master bathroom. My wood furniture is a matched set and I would love to re-finish it. I also have an old antique brass bed that I would love to show off. It is so pretty! I need new paint on the walls, new window treatment. The whole room is stuck in a time warp. HELP!!! Love & blessings from NC!
I think you could and do help a lot of people with your blog!!! Maybe virtual make overs!!! Sounds good!!!! Can't wait to see the room makeover!!!! And oh design star…I agree!!! Especially when Candace was making fun of one of the designs… I agree they really don't need to be so rough on them… can you imagine how nervous the designers have to be?!!! hugs
Oh my….I would LOVE help with my poor mantle! I have lived in my house for over 4 years and I have not decorated it. It's beautiful…distressed wood, 10 feet long and almost 7 feet tall. I just can't figure out how to arrange things. The things are either too small or too big.I even went out on mother's day wkend and bought things to decorate it with and I ended up taking it all back. My hubby wasn't happy because it was my mother's day present:( Please, please help my sad, lonely mantle!! My budget is $1,000 (give or take)

I need help with our Master Bedroom/Bath. I have the most AWESOME Ethan Allen four poster bed (something I've wanted my whole life) and some beautiful (but probably needing to be refinished) furniture from both sets of grandparents. Currently it is a very traditional room and doesn't reflect the rest of our house. It feels very hodge podge and not cohesive. Our style is cottage/modern with a little french country thrown in. Our bathroom is a total failure…not relaxing at all. HELP!
i need help with my entire HOUSE! scratch that, the whole house minus my daughter's room.
We bought the house my husband grew up in from his parents. right when all of the things my father in law fixed himself over the years started to break. Did i mention the 80's wallpaper in the kitchen/dinning room/bathroom and the off white walls every where else? how about the long vertical plastic blinds? we are working on a very tight (read:non existent) budget. Add two children, 3 and 1 and you have- me pulling my hair out living in a mid 70's dungeon of a split level. ick!
the one room i've been able to work on is my daughter's. it's kind of whimsy and funky.
im new to your blog and have been reading alot in the last week and lookin, love it! i just moved to seattle from mexico( the tropics) and my/out craft room needs some love, i have y computers in there, and 2 printers and am trying to get in in gear, that would be cool to see it come to life quickly!
A room redo- from you!?!?!? I would ADORE IT! Narrow it down to one room? ummm…. heres the problem, I have a whole house I know not what to do with! Actually- I believe my bedroom would be the one. My husband and I have been married for almost 6 years. We have 2 boys, 4 and 2. And we have hand-me-down bedroom furniture from the 1970s… Our bed sits on the floor. We bought this house last year and are slowly doing things to it, like paint and the outside stuff, etc, etc, etc. I would love for our bedroom to have a romantic, comfy feel and have no idea how to really achieve that. I stay home with the kids and my amazing husband works hard in a dangerous career to support his family. He deserves to have a wonderful bedroom to spend his nights (or days, depending on his work schedule) in. And I would love to feel like my room is a little oasis to relax in and spend time with the afore mentioned wonderful husband 🙂
I wish we werent moving soon. I love my house and still have lots of ideas for projects and areas that need help.
As for design star I am a reality show fan but I agree it is getting a bit too contrived instead of really looking for a great designer. Still love David too!
Pick Me! Pick Me! I need some major help in designing my Master Bathroom. I love your style and followed you through- So you think you can decorate. This bathroom will be a complete gut with plumbing moved etc.- I just can't figure out where to put everything. My master bedroom is French country with wood floors, black and tan, toile, check and antique furnishings. Think about it.
On the design star note I completely agree- I would never hire someone that was rude- whether it's to me or their crew- Being Nice matters.
yes, yes, yes! help me design my living room. i live in a small twin home in a suburb of paris, france. we've painted our walls, wanting to go for a provence look, but now i am stuck. i would love to be your guinea pig!
I agree with you 100% on the Design Star this season. Not only do I find the judges to be "out of character" and wearing way to much makeup, I also don't see a lot of talent in the group. When I hear who these designers work for, I'm appalled that they are still employed. The show is a huge disappointment this year. It almost sounded as though Vern was encouraging drama amongst the designers. I'm not even sure I want to watch Vern on his new show. Genevieve also seems a overly snobbish. Not sure whose directing the show this year, but they are definitely taking the wrong approach. Plus, as I've said before — put a few bloggers on there and they will be knocked out by the talent.
Oh – how did you know *guinea pig* is my middle name? LOL I'd love to have you advise about redoing our guest room. It's small w/10' ceilings, having been built as part of a Texas dogtrot 80-something years ago. It once was the kitchen. . . & somewhere along the way converted into a bedroom.
We moved here the end of January & STILL haven't done anything in/to that room.
Help!
Wow! All I can say is that anyone would be a fool to turn that offer down! 🙂
Blessings!
Shilo
I have watched Design Star and I find all the strong behaviors quite off putting!! The steamroller personalities make me uncomfortable and quash any interest I used to have in the show. Very sad!!
I think your idea of an online consultation is wonderful.
Hugs
SueAnn
I loved the very fist season of design star and missed them all until this year, and I couldn't agree more, the judges are downright mean. Maybe that's what they figured it took to compete against all of the other awful reality shows on TV. I think they might have misunderstood their target audience. As for a room consultation, I need them all!!! but the one in most desperate need is my family room. It is a long relatively narrow room with a bay window at 1 end and a fireplace at the other, with the main walkway directly in front of the fireplace. We love the fireplace but feel there is no way to direct attention to it because of it's location.
I'm Tivoing it because I never rememember when it's on! : ) I agree with what you've said so far. I think that maybe in past years they did let interpersonal matters interfere and perhaps it caused delays in the make-up of the show itself. I don't like that one ~ definitely bossy, and I would have said something. She wound up with a not great review on that apartment. So, she may have been knocked down a notch.
I'm not really sure who I like yet. Many of them have nice personalities right now and I like some of their work. I would not do this myself. The "hosting" portion would totally throw me.
I don't have cable or dish so I've only seen reruns of the show. Have become very disappointed with television. What should be entertainment has become a platform for spoon feeding the public the ideas of a few. Most reality shows…the winner is usually the one that is the most devious and can make the other contestants look bad. What message are we sending when the most dishonest is the best.
You just keep on blogging and maybe throw in a video once in a while. Love you style and up front honest attitude!!!!
I would love, love, love some help with our bedroom! Our home is new, and for some reason, I can't get that room "right" enough to even SLEEP in there regularly! It's just not welcoming to me.
Love your style!!
I love Design Star. My favorite is always the White Box Challenge – it's so interesting to see so many different ideas on the same space.
I need help with my family room – great bones, but it needs some finishing touches.
It would be a dream to have a space design done by you. I love everything about your style.
I would pick my Piano/Sitting room. I'm not calling it a formal living room because the word "formal" doesn't fit my style or personality at all.
Its a small space and I'm having trouble pulling things together to create the feeling I want in there. "Homey, pretty, Peaceful, girly…I keep trying different pieces of furniture and decor and nothing ever "gets it."
Also, Amen on everything you said about design star!!!
Oh, maybe our guest room, which is being converted back from an office. Or our bedroom. Just pick me, pick me! 🙂 shaunna
I think the change in tone on the show, from previous years, must have to do with who is producing it…the producers of Survivor. It has the same underlying themes now, which is disappointing because, in my opinion, the show was successful in the past simply due to the premise of the show and the talent and personalities of the contestants, without trying so hard. I also miss Cynthia Rowley!! Janell
I just found your blog about a week ago and I love it! I am currently in the process of painting our greatroom. I would love your input on furniture placement, window treatments and decor for that room. I love antiques and have several large pieces that I would like to keep in the room, but I feel like there is too much furniture in the space.
It is our only room for TV viewing so there is a 40in flat screen in the room. My husband built an awesome fireplace mantle with surround so I have competing focal points. The room is more narrow and long about 15×25. I desperately need your help!!!
oh to get a professional opinion (smile) on my kitchen. I'm not talking major reno (it's brand new) but just in terms of what to do to kick it up the next notch. We have a very open floorplan so really, you would end up being a tremendous help when it comes to helping me make things "flow" a little better between the kitchen/dining/living room. We have tons of light, lots more white/tan/neutral and my hubby (of all people) is all about "when are we going to bring some color into this place"? I just don't know what color (we have faves but what shade looks good with what we have…etc). I'd love to win this. save me from the beige!
Bernadette
I have quit watching Design Star. two of my favorite people on HGTV, Candace and Vern have shown a side of themselves that have left me with a heavy heart. I have even quit watching Candace's "Divine Design" because I feel like maybe she isn't "real". As for Genevieve , I have never connected to her. Personally I think the fact that Antonio won last year was the beginning of the end. Not that I don't think he was and is talented. But that how he treated the others was never questioned. So to them the ends justifies the means. Not something I live by or want my children to think I condone.
Now for a room consultation… MY LIVINGROOM!!!! I live in an Arts and craft home. our living room is rectangular in size with a fireplace. We have a light carpet but with wood floors underneath. As for style.. casual traditional … a clean look. I am not afraid to paint, distress or build.( I do have access to a lot of two by fours. I am perplexed what color to paint, how to accessorize my mantle, how to lay out the room.
Which room would I choose?!? How exciting-I would love a chance to have a consultation with you! I love your style!
I hated to see the way the judges were acting on design star too. I do understand that they can always take behavior into consideration, but no one will want to work with a diva tv star either!
Thanks!
i stopped watching last year already i felt the judges were totally out of line….as professionals there is a way to be *mean* to someone. The show has lost alot of spark i feel so i haven't even tuned in this yr…actually i don't watch much of HGTV use to be on in my room 20/7 but so many shows on now i just find no interest in….oh well now i have all the great blogs to follow..i dont blog just follow!!
I agree with one of the other post that David was the best! I still love his show, he is so sweet. I really don't like that Genevie she is so fake.
I am in need of a dinning room makeover. It is a very small room connected to the kitchen so it could be called a breakfast nook. The living room is also right there. I have no idea what colors to do. I love so many styles and colors that I can't figure out what would work best. If anyone needs your help it is me 😉
I have been very disappointed w/ Design Star this season. The judges are being sour pusses. We need Clive back to add some humor and light-heartedness.
I would love some design help w/ my kitchen/living room. Currently 2 rooms– I want them to be ONE.
miss mustand seed,
i don't watch design star as i don't have cable but it sounds like i might not be missing much. i hate to see people act so terribly all in the name of ratings.
And I would love for you to help me with any room in my house! If I had to pick one it would be my living room. I'll be happy to measure it if i win. 🙂
I totally agree with the assessment of the judges. I felt like they were so hostile! Especially Vern, and I have always loved him!
My challenge would be my new living room. We are moving in 6 days and we are struggling with placement and style. My husband likes modern and minimal and I like warm and a little shabby with pops of color. Our room is fairly small with a brick fireplace in the center of the back wall. I would love some guidance and support. We also have 4 kids, ages 11 to 3. We need totally livable spaces:)
I have a really odd-shaped master bedroom with a fireplace that I almost love. It is new construction (just a few years old) and I would like to add some charm with out being completely inauthentic to our part of the country/style of the house. I'd love to hear what you think!
I would LOVE your input on our Master Bedroom. We moved into a new home (well, it was built in the 80's) last August and I am totally STUMPED on what to do with our bedroom. I want it to be inviting, relaxing, and a little sexy too. 🙂
It would be awesome to have your ideas on decorating any room in my house. I love your work and your style.
I have watched 2 episodes of design star this season, I still enjoy seeing the designs but hate the reality junk and drama they create. Marla
Really? Really? OMG! I would love to have your input. I have a living room that only has one wall without windows or doors, and that wall has an installed flat screen on it. So many angles, a cat walk staircase with 15 ft ceilings, yet the room is quite small. Have I scared you off yet?
If not please enter me for consideration :0)
Would LOVE help with my living room. No matter what I try I can't seem to find the right pieces. We have an angled wall where the fireplace is and right now only onr couch. It would be great to have more than that for other seating but then the room looks cluttered.
You have a lot of fans here and they all obviously love your style. I think you would do great at virtual makeovers.
I would love your assistance with my grandchildrens room. My three year old grandson and his six year old sister share a room with twin beds. This is the room that I really has not been decorated at all. I do have iron twin beds and a french style dresser in the room but I haven't figured out how to pull it together to work for a boy and a girl.

design star; have watched prob will cont to as well. but im sooo not into the drama!!!! i have complained on their blog that just say no to the drama and bring on the creativity thats why most of us watch anyway.also its unrealistic to actually get good design in the time they give. actually there was a show called 'top design' on bravo but didnt air this yr it was better. also i thought s.y.t.y.c.d. was right up my alley much more fun.better ideas and nicer folks
i think that some deserving soul will definately benefit from your design input and i say go for it you are very talented ;). personally im good 😉
In my book, you are already a "design star." Everything you do is spectacular.
As for the Design Star show, I stopped watching it a while back because of the very reasons you brought up.
It seems that Candice and Vern and some of the others have forgotten where they came from. And, yes
personality is key.
hugs

I don't watch much reality-type tv. Seems like they always go for the nastiness to boost the ratings. 🙁
I'd love to be your guinea pig! My living room is driving me crazy. We live in a 100+ year old farm house. The living room has 4 doors, 2 windows and a fireplace that is off center in the room.
I would love if you could help me with my living/dining area. I live in a small townhouse and am trying to achieve this shabby chic/romantic feel and can't seem to get there. I know that who ever you pick will be so lucky. I love your design.
Dianne
Hi…I'd LOVE to have you take a peek at my master bedroom. It is a big space with a sitting room attached to it. It has two large windows on one wall, the bed is against another wall, and the sitting room is open on the other wall. My challenges are the windows (no treatments) and I have two older dressers that I don't want to part with but need some work. I have a brand new kind size bed and one great nightstand. I've been looking for a second one (doesn't have to match). There are also two walk in closets on the wall where the sitting room is. It is done in blues right now but open to change. I have a patchwork duvet cover that I like…but looking to change! I'd love to have you help us!
I only watched the season premier of the current design star, and I wasn't in love with it. I also love Candace, but she does seem like she may be a bit strong willed…no?
Anyhoo, on to more important things. I would love a room consult! I would certainly choose my living room since it is open to the kitchen and I never seem to be happy with the arrangement. Fingers crossed!!!
It's so funny you mentioned the drama on this show–I love watching HGTV because I find it so relaxing and a nice break from all the reality tv out there so I can't bring myself to watch Design Star because of all the drama going on!
I've just moved and am having so much trouble with my bedroom. I'm a student and live with my parents so my challenge is making a small space multifunctional. It's small and L-shaped, needs to be a relaxing bedroom, have a little place for maybe a chair if a friend comes over and also fit at least a small sized vanity or something so I can do some work on!
We dont get design star here (I'm in Australia ) so I can't comment on it…actually we don't get loads of things in Australia you guys have so I feel a bit out of the loop a lot! However we do have vegemite which consoles me somewhat.
Miss Mustard Seed, Please, I'm begging you to help me out with my dining room with your consultation offer. I'm just about to do a post about my dining room drama, because I'm up to my eyeballs in a kitchen renovation and until yesterday thought I knew exactly what I was going to do with my dining room and am now in the middle of having no clue. I've waited 8 years to do these rooms. I need serious help! Arghhhh…my head just exploded from overthinking .
oh good lord, honey, i need help with every room! lol! but seriously, my living room is driving me batty! and mostly its the layout that gets me and where exactly to put everything and what to do with it once its there. i just want my house to feel like a home for my amazing husband & wonderful son. they deserve the best as they always give me their best!
and design star, sweetie, you are sooo much better than that! and nice to boot! i don't comment much, i'm a lurker, but i visit your site daily and am a huge fan! hugs!
I would love to throw my ugly room in the ring for a consultation! It's a 10 X 8 office and I want to use it as an office/artspace with tons of storage. Right now it's ugly green with a green ceiling and a very tiny closet. Help help!!
XO
Lenore
I would love to win your consultation! The only common area on the main floor of our house is the short end of an 'L' off the dining area. The main problem is the fireplace in the corner of the 'L'. I cannot think of a way to give it the due it deserves as a focal point. The two wingback chairs and round table that I've put in the space are in no wise oriented to or with the fireplace. I need help!
Jo
Hello….New girl here! Love your blog….beautiful.

First of all, let me say that I love your blog! I'm secretly (not anymore, I guess) jealous of your braveness in starting your own business. Very inspirational!
I totally need help with my living room design. My husband and I were married one year ago, and bought our first house about a month later. I love it, but our living room needs HELP! I have no idea how to arrange any furniture in here because the TV is above the fireplace, one wall opens to the kitchen, one wall opens to the dining room, and another wall has a large window. This is the first time I've decorated a house without my mom's help, and I second guess myself too much. She usually makes great decisions, but I now live over 300 miles from her! 🙁 If you're up for an awkwardly shaped room, I'm open to suggestions!!
Wow what an incredible offer…you are a design superstar in my opinion!
I would love help with my and my husbands bedroom! We have a queen size bed, two nightstands and a dresser and the only space left are walking paths. I would love some help accessorizing, knowing what color to paint the dresser and nightstands and how to make it feel bigger. I know you're the queen of decorating small spaces!
PICK ME! PICK ME!!
I had a great room added on to the back of my house – took out almost all of the rear wall. It was a construction NIGHTMARE. 🙁 The guy I chose botched the job in more ways than I can count. During Memorial Day weekend, I took my patio set out of the shed and realized it hadn't been out since 2006!! Construction began in 2007 and … well, the basement still leaks. It's been a really rough ride to say the least.
So. Now I have this room and I have NO CLUE how to decorate it. I would love to hear what you think and appreciate this offer.
I, too, LOVE Candace Olsen and have often thought of contacting her show, but I'd really like to get this done now so I can actually enjoy the space and have guests!
The judges on ALL the contest shows (Top Chef, the next food star, etc.) need to tone it down. Do they think they get more viewers because people are interested in watching them bash the contestants?? I don't THINK so!
You wouldn't believe how many times I see a piece of furniture and feel the need to send you a picture of it knowing you'd LOVE it!
Ok. 'nough said! Take care,
d
It's so much fun to read the room redo descriptions. How are you going to pick? I would love to see you do: 1) Lee's tiny common area with corner fireplace (really want to see that one) 2) Teresa's LR w/lots of doors and a fireplace in 100-yr-old farmhouse and 3) Vera at Cozy Little Cabin's guest room in dogtrot with 10' ceilings. I wish I could get help with my entire first floor or just the "library" because I want your type of look but it's all too much to ask so I will enjoy seeing what you pick; please pick one of my picks LOL. Just to describe it, my house is midcentury modern; my furniture is midwestern primitive. The LR/DR is a quilting studio. One bedroom is the reference library. Recently removed the carpeting throughout, such a relief to have even the subfloor instead of the carpeting. Will put in a painted wood floor. I've decided the best compromise twixt primitives and a retro house is shabby French on the walls, (painted) floor, and accessories. The curtains (three sets covering sliding glass doors and 6×12 window area) are dark cream splashed with 50s green and salmon, also a nice brown, so I'm thinking pale cream for the walls (will paint the paneling and will still have the wooden low-rise cathedral ceiling with beams). The bathroom is already shabby French. I have a huge old map that should look good over the stairs, lots of wall space there.
I am getting ready to start on my kitchen. I just spent an afternoon looking through all of your house pictures, and know that I love your style, which is very similar to what I like. There are several ideas that I have picked up from you that I already plan to implement in other rooms in my house. I have waited for a long time to work on the kitchen as I have had two in college, a wedding and my daughter has been sick w/ a chronic stomach condition since she was a SR in High school, so remodeling/redecorationg has mostly been on the back burner. I have begun having a group of ladies from church regularly to eat and fellowship, so I want my kitchen to be comfortable, welcoming, and makes a statement that says come and stay for a while. I am confident that your advice would be just what I need to get me rolling with this project. What a wonderful thing for you to bless someone with. Jackie
About Design Star . . . I've never understood the concept of hurting someone for entertainment. It just doesn't make sense to me. I agree with everyone's remarks about the show not being enjoyable anymore!
Love your little cupcake window – how cute and whimsical! Thanks for sharing such a fun and entertaining blog. I am a newby to your blog, too, and look forward to reading it daily 🙂 keep up the good work!
I'm a recent fan of yours and am so impressed by your talent and how much you are willing to share. It's awesome!!! I'd love your help on my tiny cottage's main room so please throw my name in the hat!
I would love some design ideas for our dining area/little alcove area-we live in a split level home -ughhh! I feel that nothing is pulled together -I would love your ideas to make our house feel warm and inviting -because this is what you see from the front door and the back door.
HELP! Kathy T
I'm with you on this "middle school" behavior on Design Star. Personally, I like your blog far better. Forget those Hollywood egos, you should start your own online show. I'd be far more entertained and likely would learn a thing or two!
The sewing/craft/play room. Should those even be in the same sentence. It's a complicate situation. It's a small space with a lot of different not quite related furniture. It really needs some love.
I love your style so I thought I'd throw in my living room with the others up for consideration. For 3 years we've been sharing our home with another family with 4 young boys (and we have 2!) We let the boys take over the living room and use it for pillow forts, etc. Now the other family has moved out and I want the room to be comfortable for everyone- adults and kids. The re-do will have to be entirely flea market/yard sale/do-it-ourselves as we don't have a lot of money, but I feel excited about the possibilities. We live in a 1904 Victorian in New England and there's nice molding and big windows. Thanks for all of the inspiration- I'll be checking your blog regularly as we figure out this room!
Hi there, just saw your posting about a design consult. I hope I'm not too late to be considered. My master bedroom is my problem room. I feel like my beds to big for the room, and maybe I have too many things that I love in there as well. But don't we all? We buy things we can't live without, bring them home and then say, "OK, now what." I love to put pretty things in the master bedroom, but I think I have gone over board. I'm just sayin'.
Marcia
Thanks love.
Hey.
Maybe just in time to get some help.
I have always wanted to do a design consult…just haven't yet.
I am going "grayer" trying to get my bowling alley style cottage by the sea want a be room to feel spacious,& inviting.
You may go gray in the process too. hehe
Love to win a shot with you.
you will be terrific!
Design Star is disappointing this season.
I totally enjoy watching more of the design delimas and techniques the contestants face on the challenges.
Not too interested in seeing them get trashed or bashed by the judges.
Have a wonderful week. geri.
Wow! You have a lot of interest… of course! A chance to harness your talent for a project is precious.
I would love some help with my studio. I design jewelry. I also love antiques and have several in the studio as props/tools… oh yes, and my worktable. My room is large, but PACKED full. I need to establish some zones and perhaps paint some of my antique furniture for a more cohesive look. I am an artist. I've already painted the table I use for a workbench, so I guess I've got some skills. I think you'd love some of my pieces, but you may have fresh ideas about them. For example, I have a great coat rack that I'd love to paint white and a 1960's style cabinet that I'd like to paint and perhaps do a mosaic on top. Someday I want an actual store, so I've been collecting… Email me at sunshineindustries@shaw.ca if you'd like some photos to have an idea what you'd be in for…
: ) Dawn
I don't watch design star, I just couldn't get into it, from the start. I prefer Sara's house and My Big Amazing Renovation. I would love a consult on my living room. Did you ever hear someone say that their space was too big?! I love the size (19×25), the windows and french doors, and the river stone fireplace, but not much else. It just doesn't feel very inviting and I can't figure out what to do. I've added furniture and taken some away, but just can't get it right. It always seems easier to help someone else than fix up your own place! I love your projects and spaces, so maybe you could help me! Thanks for the chance! Lynn
Hi Miss MS, I am in the UK and would dearly love some advice on getting a nice homely feel to my dining room. We have an Edwardian house, somewhat ramshackle, with various parts of it constantly in need of renovating or redecorating. My budget is teeny tiny – like you – I try to pick up thrifted bargains wherever I can. The room was painted dark green when we moved in and we have painted it white this year – it took 4 coats of emulsion and one very patient husband. I am trying for a New England look with a modern twist as I am using the room to exhibit our collection of rock and roll memorabilia (one Sex Pistols Union Jack Jamie Reid picture, and various rock and roll photos – Joe Strummer, Keith Richards, The Gorillaz etc). Try as I might, though, I can't get a cohesive, homely look to it. Your advice would be so very welcome. My email is barbiewyard@hotmail.co.uk if I am lucky enough to be chosen. Many thanks! Bee
We just moved into a new house and I am having a hard time with how I want our living/kitchen set up b/c is it one large room. I would love it if you would help me redesign our living room- having a hard time knowing what direction to go! You are great at what you do!
I would love, love, love having your imput in designing my living room. I am currently having my loveseats recovered with drop cloths after carefully following your thoughts on how to prepare them. The livingroom is the largest space in my house and the most unused. It's just impossible for me to find a way to make it cosy. It's large and has 4 windows, a fireplace, a wall of built ins and 2 doors. So, no one uses the room. I would love your help! Your style is so me – I would absolutely love your thoughts! Best – pam
I used to love Design Star but can barely stand to watch this season because the negativity and rudeness is just too uncomfortable. I like the judges on their own, but yikes, they're downright vicious anymore and it makes me squirm for those designers. I think I'll stick with dreams of competing in some of the more well-known online challenges — so much more encouraging. Either way, I'm sure you could easily pull off your own show. 🙂
Choose me!! Choose me!! I have a small sitting room in my house that needs some inspiration! It's very small and needs some kind of purpose it is suppose to be a living room, but it is only about an 8' x 10' room. Two windows and a piano!
Help!
wow check out all the comments this maybe a difficult choice for you and im sure you will make the right one ;). i truely love your designs you are such an inspiration ;). but im such a diy person . so did watch design star ,when they do team challenges it falls short i think too many ideas so different, best thing i think was the electrical cord nailed up to look like a musical note. also the guy that quit i so understand him not wanting to swim with those sharks
We've lived in our new house for 2 1/2 years, and I still have rooms without one single thing on the walls! I'm stuck and don't have a clue what to do!
I have a dining room with bare walls, a living room with an unusual layout…and bare walls, and a master bathroom with only a poorly-hung curtain rod.
HELP!
OMG I was just going to do a post about Design Star and you must have read my mind! Vern has turned into a real JERK this season and the challenges are so abstract that there is NO WAY the designers can do a good job with the time contraints they are given!
Amen Sister! Design Star needs a makeover of it's own!
I didn't know about Design Star until last season. It was fun to watch, and the judges were decent enough to encourage and smile at the contestants frequently.
Not so this season. I am sure they've been told to act that way because it's way too much of a behavioral change in all three of them to be real. They portray an attitude of "good riddance" whenever someone has to leave.
I am wondering if the show has become scripted somewhat, in order to be considered "good TV." Not for me. Can't stand any of them. It's like watching Survivor now. I'm done watching.
I'd love some advise. I have a living room that's going nowhere. Currently it has dark walls, a high ceiling and very little furniture. It needs direction!
I must say, I adore Candice Olsen, although she's a bit modern for my taste, and I never see anyone unhappy with her work.
Please please pick me! I have been admiring your guest room since you blogged abt it and have chosen to re-do my own b/c it simply did not live up to MMS's standard! Problem is, it is also Craft Central–and oh the mess! Help!
Dear Miss Mustard Seed,
I love your wonderful homey sense of style. Your home looks warm and inviting; it feels like a hug. I am striving for this in my home. I also like having a subtle witness in the home. For example, I bought an old photo of a toddler boy hugging his baby brother. I felt that it captured the verse to love one another. I also have a reproduction of a painting of a mom consoling her upset little one. He has just calmed down from his sorrowful state. It illustrates the verse where God says that like a mother comforts His child, so He would comfort us.
I'd love to have your consultation. I would take pictures of different rooms and let you decide what appealed to you.
Thank you for sharing your talent with the world through your blog. I have found it very inspirational.
Rebekah
I agree… Design Star is sucking this season. I am not into it and I have put Nina on my "Do Not Want" list.
Thanks for stopping by my place..did you post about your table? I would be interested in what you did with yours. Did you research at all on the designs?
