Trumeau Mirror Transformation

Wood lovers…look away.
I found this trumeau mirror at a yard sale in September and immediately fell in love with the shape.  I wasn’t too in love with the 1980’s speckled finish, though.  It looked fine from a distance, but it looked dated when you leaned it.  It was also a little heavy visually for the room.  I asked some opinions about painting it and received many pleas asking me not to.
Well, I gave it a lot of thought and then I saw this picture…
(Thank you, Judy, for letting me know this picture is of the beautiful home of Desarae Crafts of Peeking thru the Sunflowers.)  I love the colors of this mirror and knew I wanted to paint mine, so I did…

…and I love it!.

The finished turned out perfect and the color compliments the other blues in the room, but it’s not too matchy-matchy.

I was painting and reupholstering my pair of French chairs today and I am giddy with how they look so far.  I can’t wait to share…

I’m sharing this at SNS over at Donna’s.

  1. That mirror is gorgeous and looks beautiful in the room. I have 2 large gold mirrors that I am getting ready to paint. They look so dated, that I think a coat of paint would do wonders for them. I can't wait to get my Jan. 2011 issue of Romantic Homes. Another one of my blog friends, Anne (Fiona & Twig) is featured in there too. Love & blessings from NC!

  2. Can see where you are coming from- although initially I prefer wood- but the inspiration picture and your final result have me convinced.Question : why did the designer of the inspiration pictrure not give the wooden console/ desk underneath the mirror the same paint treatment- as I think the wood underneath it kind of jars with the painted mirror frame- ( love their X mas decor though.)Do you think this was just an oversight? Would you have gone for the whole painted look or would that have been too matchy- matchy??

  3. The mirror, while pretty "before" did not have any "wow" factor. Now, with your paint treatment, it will be getting lots of second, third, and fourth looks. I'm anxiously awaiting those yummy French chairs.

  4. Wow, it's really beautiful! And, I admit, I'm one of those people who always think you're going to mess up a beautiful piece of wood with paint. But I really like this!

  5. Your inspiration picture belongs to my sweet friend Desarae Crafts at peekingthruthesunflowers.blogspot.
com. Her beautiful home appears in Midwest Living.

  6. That, my friend, is an amazing transformation! And I love the not so "matchy matchy" comment…. I sew and have always focused on matching colors exactly but have learned that real designers don't do that. It adds to the interest not to. Thanks for sharing!!!

  7. I LOVE it too!! Can you share the colors you used?

It looks fabulous where you hung it! Thanks for the inspiration!

  8. That turned out beautiful! When you had it hanging there in the wood color it was heavy looking for the room. Now it is an accent to the beautiful blue curtains, I love it. I can see that wreath you have on your piano hanging from it, it would looks so festive on that wall.

  9. I love it. I too have a hard time painting wood. Yesterday I finally broke down a painted an antique high chair. My grandson will be here tomorrow and it was just too gross for him. Now it is beautiful.

  10. I agree with YOU… the right decision was made…it looks beautifully fantastic! I think everyone has a hard time painting wood, but…you have to in order to get the look you want. You did good! xoso Sandy

  11. Good for you to listen to your heart and go for it! And you know what, it is FAB! I've been on the lookout for a Trumeau to add to my home as well.

  12. Oh so fabulous!! Love the way it turned out! I was lucky enough to take a trip to Paris with my mom a few years back. I had my heart set on a trumeau mirror…can you believe I only came across two of them? I did come home with a mirror just not a trumeau.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

  13. Ok, so I'm hoping that if I wish hard enough I'll find a mirror like that one I can attempt to paint. You did a great job transforming this!

  14. Do you have instructions on how you painted this mirror? I need to paint a mirror but don't know exactly how… I love yours! 😉 And I love your blog. Very instructive. I've been here reading about furniture painting for hours… 😉

  15. This is truly lovely- can you pls advise the paint colors, order in which you applied them please? I have a similar mirror that has been in the corner of the garage and was just about ready to donate it to Goodwill but it has now moved back into the living room- I had told my husband I needed approx $200 for a new mirror over the sofa but when I told him I was going to up-cycle the one in the garage, (and where I got the idea) he wanted to know whose feet to kiss for saving him money! HA!
