1/2 Bath Refresh

Well, today was yet another school snow day.  It was a really good day, though.  The boys played very well together and there was lots of laughing and toys everywhere and imaginative play.  In addition to it being a delight to listen to them play, it allowed me to get some things done.

I listed some more things in the online shop and packaged up most things that have sold to get ready for our shipping day tomorrow.  In addition, I played around in the house a bit.  I haven’t touched the half bathroom since I finished it a few years ago and I’ve been thinking it needed a little refresher.  I’ve been leaning pictures against the wall in there and planning things out in my head for weeks and I was finally inspired to work on it today.

Above is what it looked like when we finished the bathroom reno.  As a point of reference, this is what it looked like before the reno…

Here’s what I did to the back wall today…

Before it had a single picture and I swapped that out for a vignette.   The shelf had a tote with shells, an alarm clock and a few other things.  Now it has a row of ironstone milk pitchers.

The smaller shelves next to the radiator are basically the same, but I tidied them up a bit.

I hung some more antlers above the mirror and old pictures and ironstone on either side.  I’ll have to get a picture with a wide angle lens, but here’s a peek…

I kept everything else the same – the antique bucket as a waste basket…

…and the locker baskets on the wall to hold rolls of toilet paper and hand towels.

Jeff was a little skeptical about the antlers, but the way everything comes together in the room feels more intentional to me.  And it’s just a 4 x 8 half bathroom.  I feel like a small room is where you can be a little braver than usual.

  1. Question: Did you remove all the tile on the walls or somehow put the beadboard paneling on top of the tile??? Thx. Great bath!

    1. It was plastic tile original to the house (1940’s), so we were worried about asbestos in the glue, so we didn’t want to pull them off the wall. We installed the bead board right over it.

  2. I agree with Jeff about the antlers – skeptical would be a good word to describe how i feel about them – not your in particular – just – antlers – they’re EVERYwhere – i don’t get it…. BUT I agree with YOU about being able to do cool stuff in a smaller room! I’ve always loved this bathroom – and I even used that tile in my upstairs bathroom re-do!

  3. Your refresh is truly inspiring. I’ll speak for myself but pretty sure it will come up more than once, even though “less-is-more” I’ll bet you’re going to expand upon the ‘updated collection’ by filling that type drawer. I 2 love creative snow days 🙂

  4. I know the décor world is kinda saturated with antlers at the mo’, though I don’t care – LOVE the look of them. That said, I actually don’t have any aside from a few odd sheds (can’t warm to the idea of using trophy antlers for decorating – just a personal choice).
    The refresh looks great!

  5. Absolutely stunning. I would never have thought a bathroom could look so appealing! Ha, no really it is! You come up with some ideas I would never even dream of. Thank you!!

  6. Enjoy each and every post and get some really great ideas….now, to just implement them! Thanks for the daily inspiration!

  7. Do you feel the need to put a plastic bag in your wastebasket? I know it sort of ruins the look but doesn’t it get messy/dirty otherwise?

  8. What an adorable bathroom! I have the same little hexagon tile on my floor. Turned out super cute. Thank You for the pics and the inspiration!

  9. I have cast iron radiators in my house and I wonder if you could share where you purchased the beautiful patterned metal you use when you box them in. The entire bathroom display is amazing and I would love to use your idea for the radiators covers so I can create shelving like this !!!!

  10. Simply love the colors and antlers. I have used them for years, even in the bathroom as towel holders, and light fixtures. I have even cut them up to use as buttons on the guys pullovers. Some are sheds and others are from my husband providing food for the family. They blend well with the lovely Ironstone, wood and metal elements. All beautiful elements used in a way not originally intended. Great look and design!

  11. I love it and the antlers. I just ordered a set of Roe antlers from One Kings Lane. Living in Oklahoma they are everywhere but I still love the look. Mine are resin not the real deal but they look authentic enough. I love everything you do. Thanks so much for the inspiration.

  12. I have a type setter “shelf” too and now I know what to do with it. I have moved it around so many times and I think it will have a new home.

  13. Just received my daily email from Joss & Main and immediately saw your dining room photo on there. I was like “I know whose room that is”. How exciting for you!! Love your blog as I check it every day. It gets my morning started!!

  14. Oh my! I really love how you finished your bathroom. I think you achieved the perfect balance on your accessories. I was wondering about the flooring, is it actual tile or vinyl? I have found vinyl with that tile pattern. 🙂

  15. I love the new look. Sometimes just a little change can make a large impact. I wouldn’t have thought of the antlers, but I like it.

  16. I’m not an antler kinda gal, but I must say…they look great there! It really works…and with those ironstone milk pitchers on the shelf, who will even notice the antlers! 🙂 I love the look of it all together.

  17. Love the locker room baskets. I was looking at “Sur La Table” web site & was looking at the dish towels, (yes, I have an addiction problem to them) Anyway’s they had a solid blue one with a cow and made me think your paintings that you have. You might want to take a look. 🙂

  18. It looks really great, I love the styling. I love to change things around frequently in my home too, I am always getting comments from my other half when he comes home, he is never surprised to see something new.

    Lee 🙂

    1. The window was actually covered and just had a sheet of plywood as a view, so I covered it with the fabric until we did the reno.

  19. The printers tray is my favorite, I use mine to display my thimble collections. Sometimes in most unusual places.
    You did a lovely job.!

  20. I always cringe when I see dead things hanging on the wall. But other than that, lovely! (don’t take offense….it’s just me.)

  21. Do you have a close up of the framed photograph? I’m looking for something like that. Bathroom looks great btw.

  22. Lovely, as always.
Question: You put a lot of holes in the bead board & the walls. In a short while, when you decide to restyle the rooms :o), how will you plug the holes? I am always afraid to change up things in our house — plaster walls with repairs by me always look poorly repaired. Any hints?

  23. My daughter in law met got me hooked on your blog and when she met you in Warrenton, Virginia a year ago; you signed one of your books for me. I love antlers anywhere especially in Christmas decor which my daughter in law also does and which I’ve coveted forever! Should you run across another pair (small) in one of your journeys, would be willing to sell them?

How you accomplish so much with so many snow days is beyond me. We have the snow but our son is grown so kudos to you Ms. Mustard Seed. Keep the antlers if they make you smile; Jeff will soon be smiling right along with you!

  24. Cute! Cute! Love the arrangement of antlers and pictures. Are you going to put anything in the printers shelves? They would be great to display laundry treasures, you know the amazing items found in the pockets of little kids. 🙂

    Have a great day!

  25. Love that little bathroom! How to improve on perfection but you always find a way!! I too have a type setter drawer and wondering how did you hang yours? Thanks for your reply Marian:)

  26. Maybe you answered this already-but I was wondering where you found the locker baskets. I have been looking for some for a while for my bathroom and have not found the right thing, but yours are perfect!

  27. Love the new styling. I think it fills up the wall better and I like the display of ironstone milk pitchers.I think for the average person, we’d think of displaying collections in the main rooms however displaying it in the bathroom, seems like a decorating “step up”. I also think it’s nice that the ironstone collection now flows through the house….seems more cohesive for lack of a better word. The antlers looks nice in the bathroom; I’d have no clue where to purchase antlers, lol, although I have seen them in magazines. As usual, another gorgeous styling. Great job.

  28. Beautiful as always! I just love your style and how you can take simple things and make them look so special. You are so talented and love to read and look at your posts everyday. Hope one day to be able to meet you in person (but I am in Texas so very far from you)!!
