summer shoe shopping with Walmart

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Walmart.  As always, all words and opinions are honest and my own.

Just as I take a splurge and save approach when it comes to decorating my home, I apply the same philosophy to my wardrobe.  I like to splurge on pieces that make a statement or will be a real cornerstone of my wardrobe. I then like to add pieces that are budget-friendly and low-risk so I can wear them without fretting dirt, spills, stains, wear, and tear, and paint drips.  It’s been known to happen.  There might be an assumption that the splurge pieces always end up being among my favorites, but sometimes it’s the save pieces that I wear most often.  Several of the budget-friendly pieces in my wardrobe have come from Walmart.

Since there were so many cute styles to choose from, I decided to do some summer shoe shopping and showcase some of my favorites as well as give reviews on fit, material, cuteness, and comfort.

Clockwise from the top right…  Platform Wedge Sandals | Orthopedic Platform Sandals | Navy Knit Loafers | Block Heel Sandals | Reebok Trainers | Croc Flip-flops | Asymmetrical Sandals | Knit Ballet Flats

Finding shoes that work for my right foot has been a challenge since I broke it, but after almost two years, I was finally able to start wearing my usual size and cute shoes.  I still have my limits, but it’s been fun to branch out beyond supportive sneakers and orthopedic-friendly shoes!   There is a short video below of me modeling most of these shoes so you can see them in action.

I actually bought these Platform Wedge Sandals shoes last year and they are so comfortable and cute!  I didn’t wear them very often last summer because my right foot was still swelling at times and it needed more support.  They fit my foot so well, though, and were a perfect nude sandal that I decided to take a chance that my foot would continue to improve.  I’m glad I hung onto them because they are lightweight, easy to pack, and can be casual or dressed up a bit.

I tried these wedge sandals because I liked the style of them and they were described as comfortable and orthopedic.  The insert in the heels felt a little strange at first, but as I walked up and down the hall in them, I was sold.  They are so comfortable and I didn’t experience any rubbing or cutting along the edges, which sometimes happens with brand-new sandals.  I wore them to church this week and they passed that comfort test.  I walked to and from the car and around the building without feeling any trouble spots.

I ordered them in both Beige (which is more of an off-white) and Brown, but I decided to just keep the Beige ones.  I liked the color better and don’t have very many light-colored shoes.  My tendency is to buy similar things to what I already have (I just like what I like), so I try to be mindful of that and keep pieces that offer something different instead of being redundant.  I found the fit to be true to size.

While they don’t offer the best support, I love woven flats.  (As a side note, I’ve had a couple of expensive pairs of this style of shoe and these are just as nice at a fraction of the price.)  They are lightweight, comfortable, travel well, and look put together for an outing.  I have a few pairs from Walmart already that I wear regularly and I was excited to try these Navy Knit Loafers.  They are comfortable, the color is great (it’s not quite as bright as it appears in the photo below), and I love the subtle design details, but they do run a little wide and big.  If you have wider feet, this is good news!  If you have regular/slim feet, you might want to try sizing down, plan to add an insert, or try the ballet flat style that fits truer to size.

These block heels were a bit of a stretch for me given that I’ve never been awesome walking in heels, but I decided to give them a try.  As I said at the beginning of the post, you can be a little risky when the shoes aren’t pricey.  At just under $23, I could wear these shoes to heel-friendly events and not feel guilty about them hanging out in the closet the rest of the year.  So, first of all, these shoes are so cute.  I love the ankle strap, simple styling, and soft pinky-beige shade.  Several reviewers commented that the toe strap was narrow and didn’t stretch with wear, so I ordered the wide version and that was a good call.  I don’t normally wear wide shoes, but they fit my feet well.

I wouldn’t want to walk a marathon in these shoes, but they are comfortable and the chunky heels help with stability.  I think the straps might need a little Moleskin in some key places to minimize rubbing, but that seems to be a normal customization I need to make with strappy shoes.

I have to wear specialty shoes made for people with foot problems for my daily three-mile walks, but they aren’t the cutest shoes!  I decided to try a pair of Reebok trainers that are neutral and simple tennis shoes.  They feel good on my feet and will be good for wearing out on errands.  It’s nice to have some athletic shoes that aren’t in crazy colors!  I just got them in the mail shortly before writing this post, so they didn’t make it into my fashion show.

The Croc flip-flops also just arrived before writing this post, but I slipped them on and walked around the house to test them out.  Our whole family loves Crocs and we all have at least one pair.  They are just so comfortable.  I’ve never tried their flip-flops, though, so I thought I would test them out.  The footbed is comfortable, as you would expect, but I found the sizing to be too large.  I’ve had sizing issues with Crocs where one size is too small and the next size up is too big.  I think it’s because they don’t have half sizes and the shoes are unisex.  I ended up starting a return on these because they were too big.  Based on my experience, I would order a size down.

On the theme of slides, these asymmetrical sandals by Time & Tru are some of my favorite shoes in the bunch.  They were comfortable right out of the box and look way more expensive than $19.98.  The straps are faux leather, but the color (Cognac) and luster of them read as genuine leather.  They do come in other colors as well!  The footbeds are molded and supportive for flat sandals and the reviews are glowing overall.

Another favorite pair was these knit ballet flats in Tan.  I have similar ballet flats in mustard and navy, both from Walmart, and I wear them often.  I was glad to find a very neutral pair and I love the trim design around the foot.  It’s a little detail that elevates these budget-friendly shoes that are less than $15!  They do come in other colors and even patterns, but I love this color for its versatility.

Here’s a video showing these shoes on my feet and in motion…

Oh, and THESE are the cropped flare jeans I’m wearing.  I’m a little on the shorter side, so they aren’t as cropped on me, but they are a nice length and look cute cuffed, too.

I also gathered a few favorites from the new Free Assembly summer collection…  I didn’t order or try all of these on, but I’ll give you some details on the ones I did try…

The blue striped cotton button-down shirt is a classic and I really liked it, but it was too short for me.  It is described as a cropped shirt, so I should’ve known.  If you have a shorter torso, this would probably be very flattering for you.  I tend to look better in shirts that are longer, so it wasn’t going to work for me.  The linen-blend blazer is very well-made and looks more expensive than $39.00!  I ordered it in a size too large (I’ve been losing weight so sizing is a little tricky for me), so I had to return it, but I think I might try it in a smaller size.  It really is a nice piece to dress up a simple shirt and jeans.  Lastly, I ordered the blue and white striped shirt dress.  I love shirt-style dresses in general and I’m a sucker for anything blue and white striped!  This is cute, classic, and can be styled in a number of ways.  I tried it with skinny jeans, and a white cami underneath and tied it in the back to sinch it at the waist and wore it more as a tunic/jacket.  I like pieces that can be worn in a variety of ways so they get more use.

  1. Someone who has broken her left ankle twice, Brooks has the best support, I get the maximum support. I walk 1-2 miles a day twice with my dog. My ankle doesn’t hurt or swell like it use to. Amazon has the best selections and the prices are reasonable on last years models.

  2. Wonderful post, Marian. I love your short video. So many cute shoes. Thank you.

  3. You got some really cute shoes! I’ve ALWAYS had trouble finding shoes that are comfortable, so when I do, I buy them forever, or until they are discontinued. When I was a little girl, I was shy and didn’t want to hurt the salesperson’s feelings, so I wouldn’t say anything in front of them. As soon as I had a chance I would tell my mom that they bothered me or that they were touching my foot. Unfortunately, sometimes I didn’t have the opportunity to tell her until after she had bought the shoes and we had left the store. Mom would say, you would be happy if you could just wear the boxes. Probably true. Now I have RA, so it is even more difficult to find comfortable shoes, but I do like to look at cute shoes. My five sisters LOVE shoes and don’t have a problem with them “touching” their feet.
