There’s a house on my Opa’s street that captured my fancy when it was first built. I must have been in middle school, but it turned my head even then.
It’s classic. Upscale, but not too fussy. It looks cool in the summer and cozy in the winter. I love everything about the exterior of this home.
It’s called The Berry Hill, designed by William E Poole. The interior floor plan isn’t what I envision for my “dream house”, but if I ever do get to build something from scratch, a picture of this house will definitely be carried with me to the drafting table.
I love the curve of the roof, the copula on the garage…
…the detail on the windows, the wrap-around porch, the crisp white siding and black shutters.
Maybe one day.
This house was around the corner and a fairly new build. It is different, but has a lot of similarities…
It is beautiful and was calling me to come snap a few pictures.
I hope I didn’t look like too much of a creeper walking around the neighborhood with a dSLR camera…

So beautifully manicured!
Remember young Natalie Wood… in MIRACLE ON 34th STREET?
…just repeat after her!
I believe.
I believe.
I believe.
have a great week. Pat
What a lovely dream home. I believe! I believe,
I think you and I were cut out of the same cloth. I love the same things you love. (Though I have to admit I would side with your husband on the ceiling fan).
I have so many of William E. Poole’s homes saved in my someday file. I love the exteriors, but always want that interiors to look completely different, but that is a simple change right. 😉
Not at all I do it all the time. They are both superb.

This is my house! We built it ten years ago and ave love living in it so much! We made some modifications to fit our needs but these are the plans we used. I’m glad you like it.
Those are beautiful! I’m a sucker for a black house with white shutters, regardless of the style! Definitely not creepy (coming from someone who has done the exact same thing!)
When I was a young wife, I bought a magazine of Southern Living House Plans and ripped out several of the plans and kept them in a notebook—this was one of them. We never built, though we debated it…my husband fancies himself “the house whisperer” and we end up buying older homes to fix up. But I love a white house with black shutters and a great porch!
Creeping and dreaming with you!!!
Well this home is just heaven on earth!
I was creeping around taking pictures of old houses and gardens in Rhode Island on the weekend worrying that someone would come running out screaming at me to get off their land.
Love the houses you chose to show us. That Cape Cod style is gorgeous with it’s cupola on the garage and classic dormer windows.
Both of these are considered “country-style” homes…each have touches of Cape and other architectural elements here and there. But in the south, this was “all the rage” years ago.
I built one for my family 20+ years ago….covered front porch, dormers, shutters, columns, etc. If I remember the exterior of your house Marian, it would not be difficult to get this “look” on your house…not cheap, but doable!
Or better yet, just jump out there and build one or find one to redo while you are young!
There is a carriage style house in the neighborhood I grew up in, Nassau Bay, across from NASA. It has and still is one of my fav homes and I still make a point to drive by it when I am in the area. Yes, I have taken many pictures of it- maybe they are used to me!
I love the house with the chimneys. I agree that you should think of building your dream house now while you’re still young and can enjoy it for years! (Even though the house you’re in is lovely!)
I love deep porches on houses in the South. I am also just a little crazy for dormers!
Marian, I “feel” a move coming on…..
PS definitely do it while you have the energy. You have more now than you will five years from now…true words..
Oh, that first house is just lovely! Our little cottage is similar, but with only 2 dormers and only half the size. We’ve also always dreamed of building our own (with our own hands, we’ve done the builder in a development path), but so far it hasn’t happened, and we so very much love where we’re planted, so we look to remodeling and adding on to suit our family. That floor plan gives me a few ideas. Thank you for posting the link!
Love all of it, especially the detailing on the front door!
You are well on your way!! It’s simply pretty great!!
We have the same style house just across the street but its yellow. Not sure which I like better. I do love the style though. Here in AZ its very different. Most houses are stucco.
Is that a pea gravel driveway? Swoon!
This is actually my home:

Ive been thinking about adding dormers and finishing our 3rd floor attic space. Do you think dormers would look odd on our roofline/this “tall” of a house?
There is a house almost identical to this right up the street from us and I have always loved it. It recently went up for sale and it did not take long for someone to buy it. Just a few weeks…
have done the winner for the Antique Farm House Giveaway. i know you have been very busy thank you. love the homes would love to see inside of them.
Going to be honest, I’m a little disappointed MY house isn’t your favorite house…=)
We have that first home down the street from us (I live in Madison, Georgia)! I’ve always loved the garage. The house sits on a pond (the pond is in the backyard).
Your dream house is beautiful. I have had two and have lived in my home now for 28 years. It is so nice to have a dream and live it. Built this when kids were 3,5,and 10. Many good memories!
oh, they are pretty! And to be honest, I always feel like much less of a creeper with my DSLR than I do if I’m walking around taking pictures with my iPhone. THEN I feel like I’m trying to take pictures on the sly – and I feel like I get the stink eye from people. At least with the Big Camera I look like I might be there for a “real” reason!
-b.
Both homes are beautiful, and if you keep working as hard as you do, maybe that “one day” will come sooner than you think!…….I would love to build a craft home with an attic big enough to be a master and a big basement to be turned into a craft room/office…oh…some day!….
Beautiful homes.
ha ha! These are beautiful. I especially love the white with black accents. Crisp and clean! When I see pics like this, I realize our passions are totally influenced by the region in which we live. Siding in the East. Stucco in the West.
That was how I found our first house! We rented down the street, and everyday I drove past the little bungalow I loved. Then, it went on the market, and we leapt! The difference between us, though, is you see an adorable cupola, and I see a complicated roof line. Can you tell I am pricing new shingles?
Marian,
Both houses are beautiful. Crisp white with black shutters is classic.
We resided due to hail damage and used almost exactly the same dove gray that has been there for past 35 years. It still makes me smile. We have black shutters, roof and a front porch across the whole front of the house. Everyone around us knows us as “the gray house with the pretty porch”. Can’t change now.
Now to get the full height bay windows repainted in crisp white.

Dear MMS, You picked out such a sweet house for your favorite. I’ve always favored white houses with black shutters and now I live in one. You’ll have one too I’m sure of it. Just keep doing what you’re doing! Hugs, Anne Boykin
OMG, THAT is the same house plan I used to drool over~~~from a Southern Living collection of house plans like someone else mentioned earlier!! The dormer windows, the shape of the glass in them, everything about this house, I LOVE! It was my dream, if I ever won the lottery (HA!) I would build this house. If I remember the house plan correctly, I would have to add a huge family room to the downstairs though. Doesn’t look like it’s gonna happen …I’m gettin’ a little long in the tooth. Would have to add an elevator so I could go upstairs ; ) the ole knees ain’t what they used to be..*le sigh* Guess I’ll have to be content with this old house (it was dh’s family home between Army assignments)with low ceilings and heart pine walls. It was so dilapidated many years ago when WE stopped moving around in the Army~~we got honey out of the kitchen walls. Yep, there was a beehive in there! Oh the stories I could tell about the first remodel! We’re working on the kitchen and dining room now. This will be the last remodel, the next one will have to be by the next set of owners…..
This house reminds me of the ones in New England designed by Royal Barry Wills, especially in the 1940s. I love all of his classic homes, especially the Capes with the master bedroom on the first floor.
There’s a house I’ve been wanting to ‘creep’ on. They have a fantastic cottage style garden that I want my son to recreate for me. I want to snap pictures of it and have been afraid they might call the cops on me!!
I love the dormers and front porch. I have seen this plan before and am always drawn to it. It truly is a classic….
Love these houses!!
I can see why it caught your heart…love the porch and the simplicity of the lines and the trim this is my first time commenting on your blog, and my compliments on everything I have seen so far, including the pictures of your 2 little boys.
both homes are lovely! I think the dormers are what makes them!
I know this house! It is built several places in my home town, Wilmington NC. It is a very pretty house!
Debbi
I thought this was YOUR house. I love it too! We can dream!
Oh, you’ve got to get pics of the inside(s) of these. Maybe Hooked on Houses can help 🙂 I love those curved windows and the shudders that close to fit the curve. And, talk about nice porch!!! WOW.
Those are exactly my dream houses as well. Crisp, white with lovely porches. I am completely unable to fathom why I never see anyone sitting on their porch.
My home is a William Poole design….he does the BEST designs for old/new homes. They are always So gracious and beautiful! I hope you get your dream house one day! You can look up his designs and see the floor plans, etc.
I say go right up and knock on the door. You may be surprised to get an invite in and fall in love. Who knows, maybe we will even see a Miss Mustard Seed item in there. Go for it!!!
I so love William Poole…I have walked by his main office in Wilmington NC many times…I so well know that plan….He creates wonderful house plans…there is one similar in my neighborhood too….Marian, I know that one day, you will have the home of your dreams!!!
William Poole is a great Architect . I have a modified William Poole home called Evergreen. It just is larger than the original design. Pretty home you showed. I too have homes I loved ever since I was about 5 years old. Quite a few in different places -ArmyBrat.
I know what you mean about the William Poole houses. I have a book of his house plans, and have always thought I’d like to build one.
The house in the first picture reminds me of the house on My Three Sons.
I too love that kind of architecture.
Too weird! I like so much of your stuff and now we hav been drooling over the same house plan!!!! I’m like you, there are a few things I would change in the inside, but it is th same house and I found it in Southern Living almost 30 yrs. ago……I can’t believe I’m even saying that!
That is my house, but mine is a gray/green taupe with off white trim and black shutters. Love all his plans and first bought Sulpher Springs plan that looks same but is smaller to build when only had 2 children, but had 3 more and needed larger version so bought this one already built 11 years ago. Has been a great home!
Wow, do I love this house design, when you finally build yours I want to move next door
to you, can we build two homes? Beautiful design. Home really looks like what you would want, Wouldn’t we have fun decorating it? DREAM ON, it could happen..
God Bless You for sharing.

ARE YOU GOING TO COME TO SOUTHERN California?
I am not sure it is The BerryHill, as I just noticed roof behind hipped roof carport and that is not on my house but another similar plan called The Natchez to The Natchez II, that has a Master.Bedroom wing behind the carport
I love it too! I got your book today and love it too!
It’s a beautiful home. Elegant yet quant, simple yet has sophistication.
Just lovely.
Beautiful! So welcoming and cozy
Isn’t it funny how a house can appeal to the eye? That house is so pretty….and looks like a happy house to me.
I enjoy your blog. Please come on over and check out my new blog at http://gigipinkglitter.blogspot.com
Thanks,
Tammy
I LOVE that house! It looks country (which I love), elegant, charming, yet so inviting. It looks like a home, not just a house. Love your taste!
That is my dream house! I have always wanted to live in a house like that…someday!
We built The Berry Hill over 20 years ago. Still live here…Now, I’m wanting to do some interior remodeling. I was actually googling if anyone had this plan and enlarged the kitchen and den space making it larger out the back of the house..maybe adding a butler pantry, growing the food pantry & laundry….I would love to know what you think 🙂
