I shared the plug-in wall sconces from Lamps Plus before Christmas, but I never wrote about the details of the fixtures as well as another lamp we selected for the room.  So, that’s what this post is about!  Within the first few months of living in the house, we had recessed lights installed in the living room, my studio, and all the bedrooms.  There was no overhead lighting and we didn’t want to rely solely on lamps, especially during the winter when it gets dark so early.  So, we turn on the recessed lights and wash the room in light when needed, but we mostly like to use lamps in this cozy room for tasks and ambiance.

For the chair in the corner opposite the sofa. we got the Antique Brass Metal Pharmacy Floor Lamp to use for reading and tasks done in that chair.  It’s also a nice light to turn on when we want a little light in the room while watching TV but we don’t want a glare on the screen.

I also love the way a classic floor lamp makes an armchair feel like a cozy spot to read a book or pick up some knitting.  It’s homey and inviting.

I also like that this particular pharmacy-style floor lamp is adjustable in several ways.  The head of the lamp can be tilted and the height can be adjusted so it’s perfectly situated to the chair, side table, or work surface you need to have lit.

On the other side of the room, hanging above the sofa, we have the Mendes Antique Swing Arm Antique Brass Plug-in Wall Lamps.  We had vintage lamps on the sofa side tables for the first year in this house, but I didn’t love how they blocked the windows.  When we repainted the room, it was the perfect time to change that out and I went with sconces.  It is so much nicer having the light overhead and having the windows and side tables free.

I used plastic cord covers that stick to the wall to cover the cords and then painted them the color of the walls so they blend in.  Since you’d have to lean over the sofa to reach the switches, we put them on a remote so it’s very easy to turn them off and off.  The lamps are on dimmers as well, so we can have them low for ambient lighting or bright for reading or other tasks.  They really are perfect for this room!

From a design perspective, I like how the finish of the lamps “speaks” to the curtain rods.

The sconces are articulating, so you can adjust all three of the joints and position the lamps where they will look and function best.  I played around with them a bit to determine the best angle for our sofa set-up.

While they are a functional component of the room, I like how they read as a part of the “art” above the sofa.  They give the original oil painting and antique European antlers even more visual importance by framing them out.

I also ordered an Antique Brass Plug-in Picture Light to hang above the art behind the wing chair opposite the sofa but decided to use it in a different room.  That print has glass over it and I was afraid the light might cause too much glare.  It’ll work better over one of my oil paintings.  I’ll likely hang it in the dining room over one of the portraits.  I love the classic styling of this picture light and how it can be plugged in so I don’t have to bring an electrician in to wire it.  I’ll just use cord covers to hide the cord under the painting if it’s visible.

I have seen it often said that lighting brings design to life and I believe it.  It’s not only a practical part of a room or home but it’s an aesthetic component as well.  You would be surprised how much a good fixture can add to a design and Lamps Plus has thousands to choose from.
