From Bad to Worse to Finally Finished

I love it when I finally finish a piece that’s been taunting me every time I go into the workshop.
I bought this piece for $3.00 at a yard sale.  It was originally part of a vanity that was split in two and then separated from it’s twin.  The piece was dirty, the side was damaged and that paint job did not do it justice.  My husband fixed it up and made a new side for it.  I cleaned it up, painted it cream and rubbed an antique stain on it.
After all of that work, it looked terrible and I was ready to throw it away.  I wish I had a picture of how bad it was.  It looked like I had taken a beginning faux finishing class and tested out my newly acquired skills on this piece.  So, after months of eyeing it when I went down to fetch my laundry, I finally gave it a fresh coat of a soft bluish gray color.
I kept the original hardware and sprayed it in an oil rubbed bronze finish.  When I first started my decorative painting business, I felt like I needed to add hand painted detail to every piece.  I’ve since learned that some pieces are fine on their own and this is one of those pieces.
The color is “krypton” by Sherwin Williams.  Dumb name, but a great color.
I can’t tell you how great it is to put on my respirator mask and paint splattered clogs and get back in the spray booth again.  I am totally in my element.

  1. Could.Not.Love.Color.More. Brilliant solution ! So glad you kept it, thought about it, came back to it, and perfected it. You should now hold onto that piece forever ! Seriously, I'm in love.

  2. Just discovered your wonderful blog and have really enjoyed reading it! Great projects~ I look forward to reading more!

  3. Hi! It's me again! I love this piece and bless you for making it come alive again. Everything looks beautiful, including the choice of color (I agree, the name is strange). I actually love that look of furniture from that era! It loans itself to stand alone or create something wonderful with artwork. I am trying to get together a spraying booth…next I will have a bunch of questions (so sorry if they are annoying) about that! Thank you for being so inspiring over something I love so much!!!!

    All My Best, Karen

  4. Gorgeous! I can't even imagine this piece once looked as bad as you say. To think it was once part of something larger is amazing. The color is perfect, too.

  5. Adorable and great color, too! I know what you mean about the spraying…I took a week off to get ready for vacation, and I'm itching to paint something, anything actually. -shaunna 🙂

  6. That is a fantastic piece!! Love the size and shape. So glad you didn't throw it away. The colour is beautiful. That bluish-grey is one of my favorites. Everything seems to look better in that colour. Great job. It's just perfect there.

  8. How could you ever doubt yourself Marian? It looks perfect. You've given me something to think about too. I was gonna do the cream/glaze treatment to an old piece, now I'm having second thoughts.

  11. Oh my, I thought I was the only one with paint-splattered clogs!!! Guess I'm not alone… 🙂

    Looks fab! As alawys!

Maybe that green dresser I showed you could benefit from a coat of krypton? 🙂

  12. I'm working on a very simple low bookshelf right now: maybe 30" high, 24" wide. Yes, I keep thinking I need to add something else i.e. stencil, hand paint something on top, tape off squares etc. But maybe it IS just best left alone! Finally settled on a soft gray green, having tried chrome yellow and then some red! It is a long process sometimes….

  13. Awesome job! I have several pieces that I'm trying to work on, just can't seem to get in the groove, but looking at this, gives me a little hope.

  14. I am sooooo happy that you kept at this piece and didn't give up on it. I just picked up the same pieces (that were origianly from a vanity and split in two) They are currently ugly and I could visualize the color I wanted (Your paint color) but I couldn't find exactly what I wanted in the paint chips. THANK YOU. I'm off to get some Sherwin Williams "Krypton" to paint my new pieces. Yours look beautiful…I hope I can make mine look as great.
