I hope you’re ready for some furniture makeovers, because you’re going to be seeing a lot over the next few weeks!  I’ve got quite a collection growing for Lucketts.

Here’s the 1800’s dresser with the amazing carved handles that I finished yesterday…

It was pretty rough when I bought it, but I could see the potential…

It’s painted in MMSMP Linen.  The wood was very soft and porous, so it absorbed the paint well without any bonding agent.  I distressed the edges and, as I mentioned in yesterday’s post, added some additional texture by applying more paint in patches and drying it quickly with a hair dryer.

This lent a subtle cracked and crusty look to the paint that gives it a sense of age.

For the styling of this piece, I kept it monochromatic and simple with an ironstone bowl filled with wooden croquet balls and some leather bound encyclopedias from the 1860’s.

My dad just picked up a Craig’s List cabinet today and I can’t wait to get my hands on it.  I can already picture the bead board-backed interior as a backdrop for ironstone…

  1. I’m in love with this piece? How much are you selling it for? And would you consider selling it before Lucketts and ship?!? Thanks, Megan

  2. It’s beautiful, I love the amount of distressing you gave this piece. In all my years of “picking” I have never come across a chest that had carved wooden handles, I love them! Now I will be looking a little harder:)

  3. Love the piece and the paint, but wouldn’t it have been nice with the carved handles stained in the same color as the top?

  4. Have you ever done a repair on one of these carved handles? My Dad gave me a piece like this that needs some TLC. The linen color is beautiful! Can.not.wait.for.Lucketts!!

  5. You sure find some beautiful furniture – Craiglist here in NW IN is so expensive – someone would have the before listed at $500!

  6. This is absolutely wonderful. The linen color accents the details of the piece beautifully. Just amazing. So very good to see your painted pieces again. Will miss Market days this year, still I look forward to reading the posts.

    Enjoy your day.

  7. Can we in the future get a tutorial on the “paint and hair dryer” technique. I’ve tried it a few times and nothing … Don’t know if my paint wasn’t thick enough, or I didn’t dry it long enough, do you put it over wet or dry paint (does it matter) or what. Would really like to see this done so I can duplicate it since I so love that look. Thanks for considering this request !!!

    1. Yes, definitely! I’m still playing with it myself. Sometimes the heat makes everything flake off and, in this case, it just caused hairline cracking that was very subtle.

  8. Hi! I posted last night about being interested in this piece. Would you be interested in selling it before Lucketts?

    1. Yes, I would be. I have another person who inquired about it before you, though. Are you local or would the piece need to be shipped?

  9. Oh my word, I just bought one just like this from a coworker for $20 because she was moving and wanted to get rid of it. I have painted a couple of pieces and she knew I would do something with it. Mine has the same wood handles, but it has double shaped circles. I had to show my husband yours because I could not believe how much alike they look! I am excited to paint it!

  10. I love LOVE this piece! So wish I lived close to you. You have an amazing talent. Happy Easter!

  11. This is so beautiful! I just purchased the MMSMP in Linen and am going to try my hand at a similar old family bureau. Anyone have advice on how to stain the top too look so gorgeous? I’ve been looking though the blog pages… and maybe I’m missing some tips!
