Antique French’s mustard jars

My focus when shopping at the Lucketts Spring Market was on finding big pieces for my kitchen, so I wasn’t taking the time to really comb over accessories and other small stuff.  I’m already looking forward to the fall market when I’m not looking for a special piece of furniture and I can meander and explore a bit more.  But, I did end up bringing home a few small things from the market.

I bought a couple of lovely ironstone bowls as we were browsing booths on our way out.  One of my blog readers came up to say “hi” as I was carrying them to the checkout and I felt like I was busted.  I know I can buy whatever I want, but I’ve also said that I don’t need to buy any more ironstone!  I just continue to prove that the heart wants what the heart wants and there is always room for one or two more pieces of ironstone if they are special.  And, these were special.  They are two different sizes of antique ironstone milk pans with beautiful crazing and hallmarks on the bottom.  Even my mom told me I should buy both of them.

I’ve bought and sold one or two over the years, but not as nice as these, and have learned that these are getting harder to find.  So, these are keepers.

In addition to my ironstone finds, I received a lovely gift from some of my friends on Instagram – Jodie & Tim of The Past Restored.  They are antique dealers in York County, PA who have a knack for finding the most amazing pieces.  I know they work very hard and look high and low, but it seems like they get once-in-a-lifetime finds each week.  Their booth at Lucketts each year is a dream and it’s fun to follow them on Instagram to see what they find and how they bring it back to life.

In their shopping, they came across a couple of antique glass mustard jars and they picked them up and gifted them to me!

They are the prettiest embossed glass…

I took a few “still life” photos of them and I am planning to paint a few versions.  Glass is fun to paint because of how the light bounces around colors reflect off of it.

Well, today, we’re having my parents over and we’re enjoying our newly-opened pool!  The pool renovation isn’t finished, yet, but it’s filled with water and the pump/filter is running so we’ve been swimming daily and enjoying it thoroughly.  I know owning a pool isn’t all laying in a lounger, but so far, it has felt like a mini vacation in our own backyard.  I even enjoy skimming it and just watching the reflection of the sky change.

Marshall (can you believe he’s 16?!) and I have sat out a couple of evenings with our legs dangling in the pool as it’s getting dark and we’ll listen to music and serenade the neighborhood.  Even as it’s happening, I know that we’re making a good memory and that alone makes the pool and all of the work we’re putting into the backyard worth it.  I’ve been sharing about the pool on my Instagram Stories (you can see the saved highlights HERE), but I will share an update here soon!

Happy Fourth, everyone!

  1. Happy 4th! Thanks for sharing your finds and the memories you are making. God bless you and yours.

  2. Having a pool will indeed create many memories for you and the family. I have pictures of my son and grands enjoying ours over the years. After my son was killed, I gathered up all the photos I could of his life and there were many captured moments around that pool. His daughters still visit “Grams and Gramps” every year and we add to those memories yearly. Like anything else involved with owning a home, pools require work, sometimes it seems like the maintenance never ends. But those pictures? They are priceless, and proof that all those routine pool chores are well worth it. So here’s to enjoying all that summer brings, making those memories that will last a lifetime. Happy 4th, Marian!

      1. I agree. These are French’s brand American prepared mustard jars. A bit confusing to call them French mustard jars. Still antique.

    1. They would be filled with fresh milk and then allowed to sit in a cool place to let the cream rise.

  3. Buy the gosh-darn ironstone milk pans! Buy as much as you want! Do not EVER feel like you’re being ‘busted’. What are they by the way? ‘Milk pan’ sounds like it would have such an odd connotation. Happy 4th of July to you, your amazing parents and your wonderful sons! Thank you for all the joy you bring so many of us!

    1. Yes! I think if I bumped into the famous Miss Mustard Seed at a flea market I would be disappointed if she WASN’T buying ironstone! That’s what I would expect to find her doing ; )

  4. Happy 4th of July! I’ve been wondering about the pool project. Nice you are able to enjoy it now with your family. Love the jars.

  5. Lucketts was a blast (a birthday treat from my parents who paid my way). It was certainly the highlight of my day to meet you and “catch you in the act” of buying more ironstone. Your ironstone collection was one one of the first things that drew me to your blog.

    The more the merrier, right?

  6. Lovely. Lovely ironstone, lovely mustard jars and lovely image of you and your son sitting by the pool and serenading the neighbors. Just lovely.

    1. I don’t have an Instagram account so I will be looking forward to the pool update on the blog. We have a pool and it’s just a wonderful addition to our life.
