I was looking through all of the amazing furniture posts from last week and I found something unexpected. A furniture post that touched me…and made me teary eyed. So, while I generally highlight Frenchy buffets, frilly slipcovers and cool paint jobs, tonight, I am going to share a piece that spoke to me.
Christie from Three Pixie Lane shared a stunning secretary that she purchased to use as a space just for her to display pretty things.
Her “pretties” are similar to ones I have around my home…antique books, sepia photos, a twisted barley pedestal and ironstone, but we also share another treasured collection…
…that of war letters written by our grandfathers. She has over 100 letters her grandfather wrote to his wife during WWII. When I saw the pictures of her letters, neatly stacked on this gorgeous piece of furniture, it reminded me of the time I spent reading, scanning, and carefully sorting my grandfather’s WWII letters he wrote to his mother. He died last fall and I miss him dearly.
I love displaying family history in my own home and it is one of my favorite “tricks” to add richness to a space. People want to lean in and look at things that are old, personal and have lasted through generations.

A couple of years ago I posted a story about a letter my mom wrote to my uncle who was in the navy on board a ship, written just days prior to me being born and then posted on the day I was born (Sept. 1951) – yeah, I'm that old!)….here's the link, you might enjoy reading the story.

Marian, thank you so much for this wonderfully sweet feature! I am sorry for your loss of your dear grandfather. With each passing of a generation comes a loss of our loved ones, but also of a simpler time, an innocent time and the wonderful gift of stories and history. It is the one thing I crave most for my children…a simple life with a season of innocence before the age of 10! My mother was an only child and passed away many years ago. My grandparents were devastated and it was difficult for them to move to my town for me to take care of them. I was in the midst of having three babies and it was the most challenging time in my life, but also one with the most rewards. They both passed away 4 years ago, within a few months of each other, when I was pregnant with my last child. I regret that I did't hook up my video camera and sit and document all the wonderful stories and history that they shared! So…that is the rest of the story! Thank you again! I take the comment above as a HUGE compliment to be compared to you! I have gotten some great ideas on arranging things from you! I promise, no more tear jerkers! Have a great weekend!
FYI! YOu may have heard from others about sheet music…I have gotten some old hymn books from churches in the area for projects and thought that churches may have sheet music like you are looking for…they certainly have old hymn books to get rid of!
