"I knew you were here"

It finally occurred to me on Monday that Christmas was right around the corner.  You’d think with all of the decorating and Christmas music that it would’ve occurred to me sooner, but it still managed to sneak up on me.  I had only purchased a few presents and it was time to get with the program.  I spent Wednesday out and about and was able to check almost everyone off my list.  With a little extra time on my hands, I decided to pop into one of my local antique malls.  I wasn’t there for a big shopping trip…just to poke around a bit and buy a few things that piqued my interest.

I started making a pile of some things…a small basket, a couple of ironstone plates, a blue and white cup, a chippy white architectural piece and a nubby linen sheet.  I was just about finished when I heard a voice behind me.  “Well, hello there!”

I turned around and saw a woman whose grand-daughter attends the same school as my boys.  She’s also a blog reader, so we always chat at programs and school events.  “I saw that pile of stuff and I knew you were here.”

I thought about that a minute and realized what a wonderful compliment it was.  She saw my style in a pile of objects I collected from several different vendors.

Here are a few of the things I bought…

This wire shopping basket was a wonderful find and was a good deal at $28.

I had a little things for baskets that day, I suppose, and I bought this little splint basket as well.  The patina on it was so pretty.

…and I couldn’t resist this perfectly crazed antique teacup for $5.00.

And my favorite find was this old wooden game board…

I immediately saw it as wall art.  The wood was a little dry, so I revived it with Hemp Oil.

Does anyone know what this game is called? I imagine it’s something like skee ball…  Where you roll a ball and try to get it in the holes, maybe?  Well, either way, it’s a piece of wall art, now.

Kriste and I spent Thursday in the studio working with samples of the European MMSMP colors (available in January.)  It was so exciting to see them in their bags and to brush out the paint, checking that the colors matched my original swatches.  Here’s a peek of one of them…

I’m not usually a pink person, but this color just might convert me.  More on that color and the rest soon…

  1. Oh what lovely finds! You do so have a wonderful eye, Marion! I saw your “Arabesque” pins on Pinterest– sorry, your secret is out! Love the color! I am a “rosy reds” person myself so I am thrilled to see your lovely pink shade! I am hoping you may have some deeper shades in the red tones.

Have a wonderful and blessed Christmas, enjoy your family and your lovely home! And thanks again for all you do to do inspire your admirers!! We appreciate you!

    1. Yes, I knew my Pinterest followers would catch on! 🙂 We are not coming out with a new red, but I will be sharing a recipe I made for a beautiful, rich wine color.

      1. Oh goodie!! I have purchased many of your pretty colors already- I am guessing you will use Tricycle and mix it with Artissimo, perhaps? I will watch for it!

  2. Well, I AM a “pink person” so I literally gasped and uttered “oh my!” when I saw that gorgeous soft PINK shade! My wheels are already turning, trying to decide what I can paint with it when it becomes available–if it is available. I know you said the new colors will not necessarily be sold by all the MMS milk paint retailers here in the US, which is a shame. (Fingers crossed Robyn Story Designs in Tampa, my retailer, will have it!) I am very much looking forward to seeing all the other new colors.

I have a question about hemp oil, if you have a minute some time to answer. I have used it over milk paint on 3 pieces: a HomeGoods bench, a pressboard/laminated type sofa table and a wooden stool. It seems like after 2 or 3 months, it looses it’s luster and the paint starts looking a little flat like it was never oiled. Is it normal to have to periodically reapply the hemp oil over painted pieces? Are these the wrong kind of pieces to be using the hemp oil on? (I really don’t have the patience to wax and will avoid it whenever possible. lol.)

    1. Hemp Oil is definitely not shiny when it is cured, so it doesn’t sound like there is anything wrong with it, but that it’s not as shiny as when it was wet. If you like more a luster, you would want to try a finish with more shine.

  3. That pink looks to be absolutely beautiful. I can see a lot of pieces for little girls rooms done in this. Or that shabby chic sort of country-girly look. You know, like sort of Rachel Ashwell? With chippy light pink accent pieces. It looks amazing!

  4. I’m already planning on what to paint pink!
May you and yours have a blessed and peaceful Christmas season.

  5. I follow you on Pinterest and I see that you have been posting a lot of pink, which I thought was an unusual color for. Love it

  6. Add me to the list of gals with their fingers crossed hoping that new pink is available “state side”. I know exactly what I will use it on first- the worn out cabinets in my vintage travel trailer! I agree with your friend in the shop, you style is distinct (and wonderful). Merry Christmas to you and all your family. Thank you for brightening my days again & again! <3

  7. Hi Marian,
I tried to get my comment in last night as I think I was first to see your newest post, but it wouldn’t “take it.” *sigh*
I wanted to tell you how thrilling it was for me to see that you wrote about my sister in your blog post!! She told me about running into you. (We always tell each other when we spot celebrities :o) I’m so glad she introduced me to your blog a while back because I sure do enjoy reading about your every day adventures. They can be as ordinary as shopping but it’s still fun for all of us to hear about. Thanks for inspiring me the way you do, and thanks for being so friendly to Cindy… she’s the “best big sister I have!”
Blessings and Merry Christmas to you and your family ~ Jeanne

  8. Whoa! well, I’m not much of a “milk paint person” but that color ALONE just might convert me !!

    I’m in love…
    Brava!!!!

  9. I too have a thing for baskets and you scored well with your finds!
I’m also not too fond of pink, but that color you achieved with your milk paint is so soft and beautiful! I may be converted and will have to find something to try it on!

  10. I can’t wait to see that pink milk paint! I’m always searching for the pink that I see in my mind’s eye : not too sweet, slightly browned with age. Could this be THE ONE?

  11. Can’t wait to see more of the pink! I would love to paint my china cabinet pink – but an aged pink. Not baby girl pink or teen angst pink. But a soft, hardly there, faded pink. Fingers crossed!
