Move Slow & Make Things | Giveaway No. 1

Welcome to the first of several Move Slow & Make Things giveaways!  To celebrate the book and introduce the themes explored in these pages, we’re going to give away products and gift cards that highlight small creative businesses and showcase analog tools and materials that perfectly complement living a delightfully fulfilling creative life.  We’re talking fountain pens, inks, journals, heirloom gardening tools, antique-inspired small-quantity clothing, handmade pottery, and more.  I’m excited to partner with some of my favorite makers to offer up some beautiful products while also championing people who live out moving slow and making things.

If you’ve missed it, you can read about the book and preorder it HERE.  You can also sign up to receive preorder bonuses, like a podcast-style series on creativity, a fine art print download, and a few other goodies.

For this giveaway, I’m highlighting the maker Susan Dunn of Dunn by Designs.  Susan designs and makes the most beautiful project bags, zipper pouches, and cases, perfect for sorting and storing the gear that comes along with a variety of creative endeavors.  I almost exclusively use her products for my sewing, knitting, and crochet projects.

She uses a mix of new and antique fabrics and adds quality details such as leather tassels on the zippers, loops for hooking and hanging, and reinforced handles.  I’ve used some of her bags for years, hauling them around on trips, and I haven’t had so much as a popped seam.  Her sewing is impeccable.

I also admire how she is always looking for new opportunities, new things she can make to meet the needs of other makers.  When I made a ramshackle DIY case for a pair of beautiful sewing scissors, she stepped in and designed a quality zipper pouch not only for small sewing scissors but for a larger pair of shears.  Hers was much better than mine, and I now use Dunn by Designs pouches for all of my best scissors.

As I was thinking of companies to partner with, Dunn by Designs was an obvious choice.  Not only do I love Susan’s work, but she is a wonderful example of a creative entrepreneur.  In the book, I write about using tools and materials that honor your creativity; that say this is important and something worth investing in.  I’m worth investing in.  This collection of Susan’s wares fits squarely in that philosophy.  Get a beautiful pair of scissors that are good enough to mention in your will, that will be used, enjoyed, loved, and prized by future generations.  And store them in a quality, lined zipper pouch made from antique textiles.

The giveaway includes a project tote bag, which stands up and is the perfect size for knitting, crochet, and sewing projects.  It’s also great for a sketchbook, watercolor kit, etc.

Susan also added two zipper pouches, which are a nice size for needles, gauges, stitch counters, pins, pencils, and a pouch for a pair of sewing scissors.

  1. Well how fun!! I just checked out Dunn by Designs Etsy page and her work is indeed beautiful. I am looking forward to being introduced to more creative folks.

  2. My husband, a woodworker, has always said he is slow with projects. I have always said it was a strength since he does beautiful work that might not be so if he was rushed. “Move slow and make things” could definitely ne our family’s motto. Best of luck with the book release and thank you for the giveaway opportunity.

  3. I love getting to “meet” new creative friends I may not have ever found on my own. Thank you.

It’s been a full, exciting week.  I’ve been walking each morning, caring for the garden beds, working on commissioned paintings, packing prints, and recording some test audiobook samples for Move Slow and Make Things.  I’ve also been arranging some fun giveaways as we get closer to the launch, and this

Antiquing Jaunt

When my in-laws were visiting for Calvin’s graduation, I decided it would be a good opportunity to hit a few antique stores with my mother-in-law.  She is happy to sit and read while I work on things, and over the years, she has helped with many sewing and slipcover projects
