If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you might remember I worked with my parents on a makeover of their bedroom. You can find the reveal of that bedroom makeover HERE and there are more detailed links at the bottom of the post. It was such a fun project and they loved the result. They have loved it so much that they have hardly changed a thing since the day of the reveal. Here is how it looked when I shared it…

They swapped out the bedspread because it had been washed a lot over the years and they were looking into getting a new rug. This one has held up well for a woven cotton rug, but it was a little hard to clean spills and stains. It was the one thing in the room that was looking a little tired.
When my parents came over one afternoon, my mom wanted to see our wool-blend Arrel rug from Rugs USA to see if it might be a good one to consider for her room. Mine is in Alabaster and she would want a darker color, but she liked how thick and soft it was. The rug comes in a wide array of colors and sizes, so we were pretty confident we could find one that would work for their room. As I shared in the post about my rug, I have been pleased with how pet-friendly the rug has been and my cats have given me a few opportunities to test out cleaning up stains. Cats can always be relied upon for that!

The rug they had currently in the room was a little smaller than 8 x 10 and we thought the room would benefit from a slightly larger rug. After measuring and double-checking, we decided the 9 x 12 rug would fit nicely and provide a little more covered room around the bed without interfering with any furniture placement.
Once we decided on the size, we ordered a Premium Rug Pad to fit under the new rug. A rug pad is an added expense and it’s tempting to skip since it isn’t visible, but a quality rug pad really makes a big difference. It provides extra cushion, prevents the rug from slipping or “walking”, and extends the life of a rug, especially in high-traffic areas.

If you’re wondering how we get rugs under beds (we’ve become pros at that), let me share our not-so-creative secret. Jeff and Marshall stand on either side of the bed and lift it while Calvin and I scoot the pad/rug under. We have to have the pad or rug folded or rolled up on the sides to allow for the lifters to stand, but it works pretty well. We’ve become a fairly efficient team when it comes to putting rugs under beds!

We virtually tested a few different rugs in my parent’s room and decided on the Arrel rug in Fawn. If you haven’t tried that feature on the Rugs USA site, it is a great way to try out colors, patterns, and textures to see what works. It’s a digital mock-up so it’s still possible that the rug won’t look exactly the same in real life, but it’s another tool to give you confidence when you’re narrowing down the options. Fawn was a little darker than the rug they had, which was a plus, and we felt the tone would relate nicely with the wall color and fabrics in the space.
It ended up being the perfect choice.

It’s much thicker than the woven cotton rug, which is welcome when you’re getting in and out of bed. I know Sebastian will appreciate it, too, when he has a sleepover with Oma and Opa. He has a bed there, but he sometimes likes to sprawl out on the floor if the rug is comfy.

The larger size also looks better in the room. The 8 x 10 didn’t look dinky or disproportionate, but the 9 x 12 looks generous and better in the overall arrangement of the space.

If you’re in the market for a rug, you can currently get 20% off at Rugs USA using code MARIAN20.

Beautiful room! I especially love The rug as I am in the market for one myself. I’m wondering will the?
rug pad discolor my hardwood floor over time? I know some pads will discolor flooring due to the chemicals used in the pad materials.
All the rugs in my home (except the antique wool ones) I got from Rugs USA. Thanks for the added 20% off.
Their prices are great anyway – but that makes it very good. I hope people know to trust them. They’re a really good company and I have ZERO complaints.
