I spent a good part of my day today helping my parents paint their bedroom in the color I picked out, In Your Eyes by Benjamin Moore.
My dad kept referring to it as “in your face.”
I’m so pleased with the color, though. The room looks very sparse at the moment, but the color palette we’re building is calming, and serene and definitely sets a coastal tone.
Before, the room was beige. My mom chose the color when they first moved in, just to get something on the wall. She’s never been in love with it and I think it’s because it wasn’t an intentional choice. It was a default one.
We tried out some test swatches last week and In Your Eyes, the middle color, was the one we both liked the best. Dad didn’t get a vote, which suited him just fine.

The dresser is a nice, pine piece, but it’s a little dated, so I asked my mom to remove the mirror and we bought a really pretty antique one. It’s beveled with a dark wood frame. I’ll make a decision about painting the dresser when the room is further along.
There’s plenty to keep me busy this week.
First of all, I’m going to be making a bedskirt out of the floral fabric. I’m also going to slipcover the wing chair AND make a new slipcover tutorial series as I do it.
And, the biggest mountain of all are the built-ins. Remember my inspiration picture?
Well, our design is different, but the idea is the same. I worked on the plans on Friday and we’re ready to put together the shopping and cut lists. Jeff is busy working on his master’s degree, so my dad and I are going to build this together (with Jeff just a phone call away if we get in a jam.) I was initially hoping that we could buy base cabinets and just build the shelves, but the dimensions are not typical, so we need to build them custom for the space.
It’s starting to come together…

I love the vision you have for the room and am looking forward to seeing it come together. I have a slipcover project and some drop cloths waiting for me, so I can’t wait to see your new tutorial. I’ve never done a slipcover before but watched your current tutorial several times and was planning to use that as a guide. Now I will have a newer tutorial to watch and learn from as well…perfect timing. Thanks for sharing your vision, talents and skills and mentoring your readers to expand on their creative endeavors.

I recently painted my bathroom this color and I must say it is the best color ever. So calm and serene, yet fresh and clean. Mom’s bedroom looks fantastic!

The wall color looks so pretty!! I actually really love the light wood finish of the dresser with the walls and bedding. Seems beachy to me as-is. It would look lovely painted though too. Tough call.

The walls just came alive! Very good choice. I just had my kitchen walls painted in Benjamin Moore Cliffside gray and the wood ceiling in Simply White. The contrast is subtle but so awesome. I’m enjoying your Mom’s room transition at the same time my kitchen is being put back together. Can’t wait for the next chapter.
I have a question about painting several choices on the wall before deciding on one. I noticed that you chose a light color – beautiful! – but you painted one that was much darker as a trial. Is there ever a problem covering up a darker color with a lighter such as you did? I need advice about that before we try several colors on the wall. Thanks!!!
That area was a little harder to cover than the others, but it wasn’t a huge issue. It just took a little touching up. If you’re deciding between a really deep color and pale colors, I would suggest painting the dark colors on poster board or sample boards (you can find them at craft stores).

It’s lookin’ good, Marian! The wall color is exacty the color I’ve been imagining on my own bedroom walls. Sigh. Don’t know when I can get time to paint them. Maybe after the holidays.
