While the boys were at the climbing lessons, I mingled around the nearby , looking for inspiration and pieces to use in an upcoming post about a summer table setting. I found beautiful as a great launching point, but I wanted to add a whimsical element to the table beyond fruit, flowers, and a pretty cake for the pedestal. This particular Walmart has a pretty robust art supply section and, of course, I meandered through there to see if any new art supplies caught my eye. I found some mini stretched canvases and cute wooden stands and the wheels started turning. What about painting mini landscape “place cards” as a little takeaway for guests?
I put them in the cart and couldn’t wait to get started on them the next day.

I wanted the landscape paintings to compliment the mix of new and vintage dishes I was using, so I mixed up some colors to match…
I used oil paints for this mini landscape place cards, but you could certainly use acrylics.
I started sculpting puffy summer clouds with a pale blue sky…
Then I filled in the clouds with pure white mixed with a little bit of the blue. I finished with a strip of pale blue sky under the clouds. One of the keys to this soft look is to keep the sky & cloud colors low contrast.
I then painted the land, starting with a pale green towards the horizon, dotting in some blobby trees, and moving towards a darker green in the foreground. I also added some loose diagonal lines to reference our Minnesota farm fields that are in their full green glory about this time.
I didn’t overthink the landscape place cards or get fussy with the details but tried to get them done in five minutes or less.
And I really love how they turned out! Aren’t they so sweet?
I think these landscape place cards would be such a fun project to do with kids, especially. And, if you’re new to painting, this is a great place to start! You can always test out your colors and composition on paper before you put them on the canvas or buy a couple of extra to take the pressure off of yourself if you make mistakes.

What a cute place card idea, Marian! I love those sweet little canvases. Blues and greens are two or my favorite colors, especially those muted tones like you used in your little paintings.
I also think the jade dishes are very pretty but I would don’t ever shop at Walmart because of their exploitive marketing and employee practices.

Random tidbit of information, I was purchasing fabric to use inside of a China cabinet that I was redoing and the owner of the fabric shop sent your book home with me so I could get some inspiration. Pretty! Thank you for your inspiration to paint walls, upholster furniture and paint furniture. I’ve also tried to encourage our daughters more in their creative pursuits!
Our one who sews, among other things, has made a multitude of slipcovers for various pieces of furniture…With 8 kiddos it was a necessity! So far they have not been successful in staining drop cloth!
They both have become very proficient in using power tools and not afraid of tearing down walls (and putting some back up) after we bought a 1963 house with 1980s upgrades. ALL the carpet went, so they put in hardwood flooring, not to mention all the electrical work they have done. We had a wonderful friend who has been apprenticing to be a general contractor and has shared the knowledge and whizbang tools that really make the job.
Our other daughter has taken that experience and now makes things from the leftover flooring (cutting boards, chess boards, etc.) She has used old silverware and leftover copper wiring and tubing for jewelry and even has started using a wood lathe. I am hoping she will turn some table legs so I can make the “table with a drill.” Ours will have to be almost twice the length, though. Hmmmm, hope that will work. So, create on!!!

I’m already a subscriber – have been for about 5 years. I’d love those little landscapes. I got those placemats for my round table but I thought they were too small soI returned them. Sure hated to do that! They were pretty nice. Maybe I’ll give it another try. My Wal Mart didn’t have the green dishes. Your table is BEAUTIFUL!!! THANK YOU FOR SHARING WITH US.

These are lovely! I’m an artist and I painted ONE HUNDRED mini florals for each guests’ place setting at my daughters wedding 4 years ago. Used the same little easels. Took me a while but well worth it. I should put it on my website. 🙂 Love your paintings, you are so talented and I hope you keep painting.
