The thrill of the hunt

Those of you who get it, get it.  There is an addiction to the thrill of thrifting.  The joy of junking!  The awesomeness of auctions! It is a drug and it’s my drug of choice.  Hook me up to an IV and open the line.  I love hunting for treasures.  I set out for a morning of hitting yard sales and I don’t know what will be in my van when I come home (much to the dismay of my husband.)  Maybe nothing.  Maybe something I’ve been longing after for ten years…and it was only five bucks.  You just never know.

I have admired these industrial shoe carts for a long time, now.  Gail has one in her space at Wild Rose and I’ve admired that one as well.  I’ve never found them at a reasonable price, so when I spotted one on the porch of a local antique shop, I was expecting to sigh at the scribbled figure and walk away.  I turned over the tag…what?!  Really?!  My heart started to pound.  I could buy this.  I realized I wasn’t even in the door, yet, so I needed to think about it.  As I gathered other good deals in my arms, the industrial cart kept nagging me.  I then became paranoid that everyone else in south central PA would know there was an awesome piece for an awesome price sitting on the porch and I would need to run and tear off the tag to get it.  I would perhaps even need to take out some senior citizens or small children to claim it, but I was prepared for some casualties.

OK, I’m exaggerating.  I cooly walked to the porch, pulled the tag and gave it to the cashier to add to my pile of goodies.  “I think I’ll buy this, too.”  I nearly passed out when she told me I got an additional 10% off of it.  No, not really, but it was the cherry on the sundae.

It has the coolest wheels, wire stabilizer and writing on the sides.

Here’s the funny thing. I’ve been hunting for one of these and, now that I found one, I’m just going to sell it.  Seriously.  All of that excitement, just to sell it.  Well, that’s the nature of the biz.
So, do you get it?  Or am I alone, here?
Miss Mustard Seed

By the way, someone asked about my lack of fanfare over passing 3000 followers this weekend.  I’ve been so busy with custom Christmas orders that I have not given it much thought, even though my mom kept telling me I needed to do something.  So, what do you think?  Another “Miss Mustard Seed in a Box?”  Or perhaps a sampling of my Christmas line?

  1. Oh, yes…I get it! I'm in your shoes right now too, as I just scored an industrial cart just like restoration hardware & pb are selling…got mine for a song! I keep thinking I should keep it just because of the price…
but, I think I'll sell it as I already have 2 coffee tables that I love! I also LOVE your shoe rack…that I'd have to keep!

  2. I thought I was the only one who gets paranoid in the thrift store. I think I must be sending out vibes that awesomeness is near me and they will trounce me to get it! LOL

  3. OMGosh I wish I lived closer to you… I want a tall one like that. I have a short one in the dining room but would arm wrestle any shopper for a tall one!! Oh my!

  4. I am addicted as well!! you said south central PA, that's kinda where I live! so what shop were you at tgat has such cool items!! I have only lived in PA since June, so any tips would be awesome!

  5. Totally get it and my hubby totally doesn't and he also fears what I will bring home. I think he fears the phone call most when I say I need him to pick it up cuz I can't handle it. But he goes with it, that's love. I would like miss mustard seed in a box or christmas in a box, especially the tree topper.

  6. I understand. I get it. It's a rush for sure.

I have one of those carts but I could never sell it. It's one of my favorite things. Congratulations on 3000+ followers.

  7. Oh I totally get it! I just don't have enough cash coming in to support my habit. LOL
As for the 3000 follower … I haven't been following long enough to know what "Miss Mustard Seed in a Box" is but I'm sure it would be really neat. I'd love a chance at your Christmas line too though.
    choices choices 😀

  8. I SO get it!! Since we can't have everything (shucks!), it's nice to have owned stuff for a while…cleaned it…petted it…displayed it just right…then passed it on to another. And making a buck or two ain't bad either!!

  9. You're going to sell it? I have been looking for one forever also. You do seem to fall into things so well. How about you box up some of the luck or good kharma you got going on and give that away for your big 3000 follower giveaway. 🙂
I adore your blog even more now than when you were a little blog.
    thanks for all you share,
    tammy

  10. I love the thrill of the hunt! It's been too long for me though as the little town that we moved to just doesn't have the sales like I am used to! Love the shoe rack- It would be great storing linens or using in a craft room.

  11. I GET IT! I GET IT! I GET IT………..and my hubby soooooo doesn't get it *sigh*. He's loosening up a bit, but darn, can't he see how awesome the 5 panel doors with aged brass knobs and backplates (fancy too!) are?!?!?! Alas……he was NOT happy when I brought home 11 (yes, ELEVEN) old windows – some paned, some odd dimensions, some with little ledges still attached to them. Anyway, I get it, I love it, it makes me more happy than a kid on Christmas morning!

  12. That's how I felt this summer getting my mirror. I was all cool like, ready to negotiate and then another person pulled up and I was like "I'LL TAKE THE MIRROR TOO!!!" So, I get it. Funny that you are selling it. I vote Christmas, I love your stuff:)

  13. I get it, I totally get it. Last March, I got an idea I wanted a shoe cart, too. But they were always too pricey- then I got one at my favorite auction for a very fair price.

As soon as I put it in my booth, I was getting calls about "is that your best price?". I wasn't going to lower my price- I just liked it too much- and even though I made good money, I was actually kind of sad when it sold about 10 days after I brought it in.

That is my show cart story- and I totally get it (and I still kinda wish I had that cart)

  14. I get it! Love the thrill of the hunt, even if I can't afford to buy that something! Congrats on 3000 followers, wow! Why not do a giveaway where you give the winner the choice of the Christmas box, or the Miss Mustard Seed sampling? Then those who don't celebrate the holiday get to enjoy participating as well. Just an idea! 🙂

  15. I get it, esp. the part about being paranoid that everyone else wants what you have your eye on, too! But she who hesitates is lost in the thrifting circuit. I still have nightmares about the things that got away. Is that sick or what?

  16. I get it….and luckily so does my husband – he's been buying & selling since the 70s. We met in the 80s and one of our first dates was to the flea market. You are so right about it totally being addictive. Congrats on a great blog.

  17. yep. I so get it. I have only been recently introduced to my DOC and it is very addicting. I keep wondering if there's a way to have a day during the week to dedicate to 'thrift shop day', but then, what about all the OTHER days??! 😉
Great find. I could so use that, and they ARE expensive! Nice find!

  18. Yep, I get it. It's crazy how 8 hours at work can seem like a lifetime but 8 hours at an auction can go by in a blink of an eye. All the while my heart is beating fast with the thrill of it.

How great that you have over 3000 followers ( I need to add myself to that). You have over 4700 readers in Google Reader alone. Just imagine how many have you in their favorites. Awesomeness!

  19. Love your new find! Don't think I could part with it though! You have been such an inspiration to me.Would love for you to stop by my blog and see a couple creations I made from old books. Thanks for sharing your talents! Tami

  20. YES, I totally get it!! On the verge of a divorce daily, I get it (ha ha, kidding, but still, he isn't thrilled with my habit most of the time). I actually posted a similar post on my own blog today.

  21. I get it and I also buy it! Congratulations on having 3000 followers. So glad I have been one! Either giveaway would be great!

    Always, Teresa T.

  22. SO true. I don't go as often as I'd like though…with a small condo with not much storage, I have to work one piece at a time or my husband goes crazy with projects covering every inch of our house!

  23. I'm always impressed at your ability to pass on your finds to others…me, not so much! I love to find treasures but until I get rid of some I have I'm afraid to buy!
I'd love to see (and win!) another of your Miss Mustard Seed treasures in a box!
Thanks for a a great blog and for passing 3000!

  24. I can totally relate. TOTALLY. I'm beginning to collect for my first boutique in the spring, and this is new territory for me…but man, I love all the junking! You just have to know…I LOVE your blog. I realized while reading I had never said that…you're one of mine I open no matter what. Love your writing, your creations, your photos. Thanks for all the inspiration you bring!! Have a blessed day, Shaunna 🙂

  25. I'm right there with you! I do think it's an addiction, however I don't know if there are any treatments to cure it. HaHa….Love your blog!

  26. Oh, I SO get it!! I was chuckling as I read the part about getting nervous that everyone else realized the deal and wanted it too!! I love that little rush of…Yes, I got it and it's perfect! (Even if covered in dust, dirt, cobwebs, a little bit of fixable ugliness!) Thank you for such an awesome blog!

  27. I can understand your excitement, I would do the same thing…get all excited and then would realize that I had no place for the piece in question. This actually happened to me with a scrubbed pine armoire this summer. Sadly I am still mourning it, but still have absolutely no place for it!!

A giveaway of your Christmas line would be superb!

    Janet

  28. A sampling would be totally awesome. I definitely vote for that.
And you are selling it?? Sheesh! It is so fabulous! I wouldn't be able to part with it myself.
But I do get it…one can keep only so much stuff!! Ha!
    Hugs

  29. I so get it. I simply can not pass up a piece on the curb. I now have my hubby spotting items on his Sunday morning run. He scored a wonderful custom made wine rack this weekend. He was tingling about the find as much as I was.
    Love the tingle.

  30. I sooooo get it!!! There is nothing better than finding that one thing that you have been looking for forever for SUPER cheap!! I LOVE IT!!! And I love that shoe rack!! So cute!

  31. I am really loving your blog. Great reading, advise and eye candy! I was just in PA (Gettysburg area) last weekend for a primiative show and I wish we had time to stop at all the shops and antique stores in the area. I also read your blog on starting your own business which is my dream-just wish I lived in a better area. Keep up the great work and I will be reading your older posts also because I love your blog!!!!

  32. I so totally get it. It is not about the stuff, but the hunt. You never know what you will find. My husband is really good about it. On our honeymoon in England we visited a lot of places and sent furniture back by a shipper. I have been in the antiques business off and on for years and am now mostly a collector, but I have too many things.
Marian, if you sell that shoe thing for less than $300 you are crazy. (I really sound like a crazy old lady.) Also, do you ask for the "Dealer's price"? When you are buying multiple items you have to bargain. If the shop owner knows you mean business, they will be glad to give you a deal so you will come back, again, and again. Also the thrift stores will be glad to give you a deal because you could become a very, very good customer. Don't be too nice now. About the Giveaway, a choice of a Wreath or three ornaments would be nice. But then, a box of junk would be great! Ann

  33. I get it! And I love that if you're willing to wait, often that deal you've been waiting for can find you. That's just one of the amazing things about the hunt.

  34. Marian,

I love the thrill of the hunt, I get it. Where I live, however, there are fewer and fewer places to grab those bargains. I'll have to make more of an effort to garage sale search.
Love the shoe rack. Congratulations on 3000 visitors.
    Karen

  35. I do love your cart. I have always wanted to get into the business of buying, fixing up or painting, and selling, but I would never be able to get rid of things like that. I emotionally attach too easily after working so hard on them.

  36. Oh yes… I get it. It's my therapy, actually. And redemption for perhaps giving something away earlier in life that I wish I really would have kept. These little treasures that come home with me are now loved and cherished.. for now. And, if I decide I don't want them anymore, I know that someone will pick them up and love them too!

  37. Note to all blog followers out there: Marian is now a professional. She does this as a full time job. You never, never ask an antique dealer where they find their things. It is like asking a rancher how many head of cattle they have. She has been very generous in showing us how to duplicate all her items. Ann
