Sebastian turns 10 with Ollie

Disclosure: This post is sponsored by Ollie.  As always, all words and opinions are honest and my own.

When we adopted Sebastian from a cat rescue farm (yes, a cat rescue farm) in 2016, he was a young pup at 18 months old. He’s grown up with our boys and brought us so much joy over the years. He really is a special dog – a perfect balance of laidback and playful.  He’s smart, and obedient, and has only ever ruined three pairs of shoes.  On February 22, this stray puppy from Arkansas who ended up living with a family in Pennsylvania, Minnesota, and Maryland, turned ten years old!

Happy Birthday, Sebastian!  We now joke about what an old man he is.  He typically goes to bed at 8:00. He likes his armchair, naps, and his routines.  While he used to be able to eat all sorts of treats, snacks, and bits of shoes, he now has a more discerning tummy in his old age.  We’re more mindful of what kind of food we feed him so he can be healthy and we can enjoy his company as long as we can.

A few years ago, we switched from kibble to fresh food and, more recently we upgraded his diet again. Because they offer a wider variety, smart packaging, and great reviews, we switched Sebastian to fresh, human-grade dog food from Ollie. Initially, we started mixing it in with his food to gently transition his diet, and he was jumping up at the bowl, eager to see what the new smell tasted like.

Even though Ollie is human grade, I opted not to do a taste test, but I can tell you from a human perspective that the food smells and looks more appetizing than his previous fresh food.  It is also easier to serve!  Their pouches open easily and fit perfectly into the custom Ollie container that came with our welcome kit.  The fresh food has a thicker texture than his previous food, which has the benefit of slowing Sebastian down as he’s eating.  In addition, Ollie offers a wide range of fresh food recipes from Beef with Sweet Potatoes to Pork with Apples.

From a scientific perspective, a fresh, wholefood diet has been proven to help dogs live up to 2.5 years longer!  That’s a long time in dog years.  Ollie uses science-led nutrition, designing their foods for dogs in all stages of life.  Sebastian doesn’t care too much about science as long as the food is yummy and breakfast and dinner are served on time.  It makes me feel good, though, that those (mostly) on-time meals are good for him, too.

You know it’s good when you get food on your nose and sniff around the floor for every last bit.

Ollie can boast that their ingredients are sourced from trusted growers and gently cooked in US kitchens to maximize nutritional value.  All of their human-grade meat, veggies, fruit, and grains are minimally processed and their food never contains fillers, artificial flavors, or byproducts.  Ollie offers customizable plans that can be mixed with your dog’s current food, mixed with Ollie’s baked recipes, or served on its own.  Ollie’s introductory quiz will help you select the plan that’s right for your dog.  With your first order, you’ll receive a full feeding plan along with your selected food, a container, and a scoop to make transitioning to Ollie easy.  All of it is shipped for free on a subscription plan right to your door, which I am always a fan of.

We don’t know how many more years we’ll have with Sebastian, but we’re going to take the best care of him since he is the best of dogs.

  1. Wow, I’ve never heard of this, how interesting! I don’t have pets, but it sure is good to know about to tell others who do.

  2. Happy 10th Birthday Sebastian! My son has several working dogs (mastiffs) and they have been on a natural food (mostly chicken) diet with just a small amount of kibble. However, many kibbles are not good, so you really have to research what you are feeding your pets.

    1. sebastian, you are precious. happy birthday!! we have had two english mastiffs, the most precious babies in huge bodies. so much to love. the second one lived to 12 years which is unbelievable the vet said. he took nutritional supplements as well as good diet. i have missed and loved all of my pets. however, the english mastiffs stay on my mind consistently. they are incredible, just like 18 month old babies, so much joy. to own one is a gift, a special privilege as well as a responsibility. you must protect them from people who have mistaken attitudes because of their size.

  3. I absolutely remember when you got Sebastian…from a cat rescue farm!! When you first got Esme and Violet, I was concerned about Sebastian adapting to 2 new cats…until I remembered he came from a cat farm! I am so happy to hear he is thriving…even if he IS 10 years old! I love the little frosty on his face. He is such a sweet boy and I am so glad he is so loved and cared for by the Parson family!

  4. Marian,
I have loved Sebastian since you first introduced him to your readers. I have a 2 year old Berne-doodle and want him to live as long as possible. I’ll be looking into Ollie.
Thank you for sharing and say hello to Sebastian from one of his California fans.
