My French Settee

I bought this Country Home book several years ago and it made me want a white, slipcovered French settee.  On a side note, does anyone else miss Country Home?  Family Circle was not the same at all and a ridiculous substitution for my subscription.  Anyway…I loved everything about this sofa and I just had to find one.
Fast forward about seven years and I found my French Settee.  It was at a yard sale for $50.00. That’s a great price, but it had been used as a dog bed and was totally gross. I vacuumed up all of the dog hair, scrubbed it with upholstery cleaner, aired it out and sprayed it with lots of Febreeze. I then slipcovered it with a tied on cover to keep the wood details exposed.
The quilt is to protect it from my cats, who like to nestle in the down cushion.  A quilt is easier to wash then the entire slipcover.  I also need to sew some friends for the lonely bolster pillow…some day.

This piece may be one of my favorites finds.  Make sure you come back for another installment of The Workshop Series on Wednesday!

  1. Wow I love how it turned out! Did you use an old quilt for the slipcover…truly beautiful!

I miss Country Home terribly! They substituted Better Homes and Gardens for my subscription…it's not even close!

    Kat 🙂

  2. It looks super comfy … is it?

I miss Country Home. I also miss Home Companion. They had the nerve to send me Martha Stewart LIVING in its stead. I mean, I love Martha. But if I'm subscribing to Home Companion and its comfy, cozy appeal, what are the chances I want to subscribe to the highly-stylized, anal retentive Martha Stewart LIVING?

    Argh!

  3. Love your settee. I do the same thing, I put blankets over my slip cover because it's easier.

Country Home is my all time favorite. I miss it terribly. I'm worried about Country Living. I enjoy looking and reading magazines. It's my quiet time.

  4. This is very sweet, and it must be comfy too. I also put blankets and quilts on my good furniture to keep the cat hair contained! YES, I miss Country Home! And Home Companion has not been around either, or am I wrong? I hope so. I have kept them both, so I keep looking at the old issues, but it's not the same as getting a nice fresh new one! Boohoo.

  5. That settee looks marvelous! Love the quilt you are using too! I love slip covers but my honey hates them. Sigh! I have a leather sofa I would love to "slip" but he says no way. I will keep working on him. LOL!

  6. Love the settee. How pretty is that? I just saw one at the antique mall that I so want but have no place for! I think I need a bigger house and bank account for all the things that I see.

  7. I love your settee too, and also miss Country Home!!! And my all time favorite that was also canceled – Cottage Living! Country Living is ok, but still not the same as the others.

  8. Genial dispatch and this fill someone in on helped me alot in my college assignement. Gratefulness you as your information.

  9. How cute..so is the quilt the slipcover or is the slipcover under the quilt? If it is under the quilt then yank that baby off and show us your slipcovered settee please.

  10. I love the settee – I have that same book.

I miss Country Home and Home Companion and Cottage Living. They were all so wonderful and nothing comes close, except for Country Living. Let's cross our fingers that they hang in there.

  11. Beautiful! No pets here, but since I am craving a white slipcovered couch in our family room, and I have two boys and tons of little relatives, a quilt would be a great washable/quick change solution. I would love to find a settee like that on kijiji or at a garage sale.

  12. I love your settee find. I miss CH too. The publishers sent me BHG instead. I already had a subscription coming to my house. So, I pass it on to my neighbor!

    Looking forward to Wed!

    Thank you,
