I stopped by my local thrift store yesterday and found a beauty of a birdcage.  I have been looking for one for a while and I saw this one tucked up on a shelf.  Lately this thrift store has gotten a little pricey with certain items and this was $12.00, which is not dirt cheap, but I thought it was worth it.
It had a few nicks and dings and was filthy, but it was otherwise in great condition.
I gave it a good scrub and rubbed some Dark Walnut stain on the dings.  So, now it looked good…what do I do with it?  Candles seemed like an easy and obvious choice.
I set off my smoke alarm as I took this picture, but I love how it looks.  Great ambience…candles and a smoke alarm.  Very calming.

Well, the snow is falling right now and it looks like we’re going to have about 13-20″ by the time this storm is done with us.  Looks like we’ll be socked in tomorrow.

OOOh, I love the candles in there! Do you think the thrift stores are realizing our secret to good decor?! Yikes! Too bad they're raising prices!

    2. Amy Kinser

I love your birdhouse and the candles in it look great. I just brought home a bunch of goodies myself a couple of days ago. I just posted a couple of pictures of them if you are interested in taking a look.

      Blessings and good evening.

    3. Chris

I agree. It was totally worth the price! I'm in love, and the candles are a perfect accent!

    4. Kim @ Cheap Chic Home

Bird houses are one of those things you can't go wrong with. Maybe you better try those battery candles, they look real and would be more soothing than your smoke alarm going off. P.S. My mom had a quail just like that w-a-y back, but it was a dark color.

    5. Anne

      Superb find, as usual!

    6. Ericka

Love the birdcage and I agree, well worth the $12.00. The candles look great glowing inside and I got a good chuckle out of the smoke alarm going off…sounds like something that would happen to me 🙂

Dear Miss Mustard Seed, This is simply gorgeous! I'd be scared that it would burst into flame though. The battery candles are a good idea. I have a birdcage in need of paint and something… Nice inspiration!

I love the birdcage, it was definitely worth $12. I know what you mean about thrift store prices, I thought it was just me.
We have about 8" of snow here so far, plus the wind has kicked up. we have snow dunes outside 🙂

Good time to get cozy and stay warm.

Your thrifty find is adorable , and I dont think a bad price either !! Great score !

    10. Low Tide High Style

I love your great $12 find, it's so charming and looks lovely with the candles, smoke alarm schmoke alarm!

We are also in the bulls eye of the storm and right now it's sleeting, but we have a blizzard warning for tomorrow…stay warm!

      Kat 🙂

I love the candles in there too. That is a really pretty cage.

    12. Traci@ Beneath My Heart

I love the bird cage. It looks great with candles in it! I can't believe you are getting that much snow! We are supposed to get 2-4 inches.
      Blessings!

    13. Sandy

Wow, that's a lot of snow. I love bird cages. I found one at Goodwill and another at the humane society thrift store. I painted them both black and put a candle in one of them too. Yours looks great. Great find!! Ya'll stay warm!

    14. Carolyn @ My Backyard Eden

It is so pretty with the candles inside. I think I need to scout out some better thrift stores. Mine have been really boring lately.

    15. Stephanie

      absolutely LOVE that!

    16. Kate @ The Gaines Gang

Fabulous! I just love it! And I just picked up that same white bird a few weeks back at my local Goodwill.

    17. ~ Regan

I love it! I think it was $12 well spent! Our GW's have been getting expensive, too… The other day, I was checking out some of their frames and what-not.. Most larger frames were $25++ !!!
      I was shocked!

    18. Robin's Nesting Place

Love the bird cage! I can't believe how pricey our Goodwill has gotten. It's pretty sad when we can't afford thrift store prices! Oh well, garage sale season will be here in a couple of months.

    19. Desiree

What a great find! It's beautiful! Too bad the whole screaming smoke alarm ruined the ambience, LOL!

    20. Tamra

      Fantastic find!!

The candles look great and as for the smoke alarm…ear plugs are cheap (lol) after all it's all about the look, isn't it?

    21. elle

What a beautiful treasure! The candles are great.

    22. Funky Junk Interiors

What a cool idea with the candles! That birdcage is gorgeous. Very unusual lines.

Lucky you on all that snow.

      Donna

    23. SueAnn

What can I say that already hasn't been said? Terrific birdhouse! I love it! And $12 is a reasonable price. The candles look cool but a smoke alarm going off, isn't. LOL! Battery operated is the way to go!
      Hugs

    24. Drew&Samsmom

I'm oh so very jealous! I have been looking for a birdcage forever! Congrats on your find!

    25. Kathy @ Creative Home Expressions

LOL! You set off the smoke alarm! Oh gosh, what we bloggers won't do to get a good picture! : )

Love the birdcage! I know what you mean about some pricing. My Goodwill sometimes has prices on things that even Home Goods prices lower. I have a new thrift store to check out. One that should have furniture ~ I'm hoping to get there in the next couple of weeks.

    26. Beth@The Stories of A to Z

How funny :). Why did it set off the smoke alarm I wonder? I think $12 is a reasonable price for that cutie!

    27. marty (A Stroll Thru Life)

Love your birdcage and the remark about the smoke alarm just cracked me up. It is so pretty with the candles, but I also love them empty. A great birdcage. Hugs, Marty

    28. Debra @ Common Ground

Really pretty, the candles add so much. Great idea for any metal birdcage. I have an alarm in my utility room that goes off when I blow out my kitchen candle. yikes, so annoying, but at least I know it's working!
      Debra

    29. Krista

      Oh…what a find! Love this 🙂

    30. Anna See

This looks lovely! Now don't burn the house down.

    31. Kim

Oh I think it looks perfect with those cream colored pillars inside. Great find Marian!
      xoxo,
      Kim

    32. Linda (Nina's Nest)

I have a weakness for bird cages. In fact, my friend Debbie @Confessions of a Plate Addict has to slap my hands and say, "No more bird cages for you!" Anyway, that's a beauty you got! Linda

    33. Zuzu

SCORE!!! Fabulous find. Also, from my viewpoint, it's a good price. There is very little to choose from where I live, and the prices are much, much higher.
      Have a great weekend!
      Zuzu

    34. Kolein

The melted lumpy candles are awesome looking in there!

One of our thrift stores has gotten quite pricey, too.

What color is on the walls….what room is this in?

I really dig the peacock?? Is that a peacock?

      Enjoy the snow!!! ~kolein

    35. Courtney Price

The worst is when thrift stores realize what they've got 🙂 and charge for it! I like to make the find!

You do so good shopping, I wish I lived closer. We could be best shopping friends. I have a large bird cage too, repainted it rubbed oil bronze. I got a nest from a craft store, fake eggs and a fake birds with feathers from a thrift store. Love it and no mess to clean up! Woot.

    37. Emily

That is so pretty! Enjoy all your snow! 🙂

    38. Jessi

Oooo…LOVE the candles in the birdcage!

    39. Ellen

      Splendid….smiles.

    40. Allison Shops

Beautiful. I would have snapped it up too!

    41. Bird

      Dear Miss,

      You an inspiration!!!

Thank you for showing us the way!! 🙂

    42. jodi@Pleasant-Home

What a great find~! And I haven't read all the comments on this post. But I LOVE those battery operated votive looking candles. I used some during Christmas and New Years. They were on a lot and they still have life in them. I stuck them down and candles I'd already used. Looked awesome.

      Hi,
I love bird cages myself. Am always wanting to find a cute one. I love how you put candles in it. So sweet. I want to thank you for doing a post on what a blog should look like. That post was filled with so much information. It has helped me tremendously, as I have no idea what I am doing and am still trying to get mine figured out!
      Take Care,
      Maria
