I’m a girl. What can I say?

Today was a great shopping day…and I love those.  I’m a girl.  What can I say?
It started out early.  My MIL and youngest boy set out to one of my favorite bi-annual community yard sales.  Right off the bat, I spotted a house that had loads of antiques for sale.  Most of it was a little too expensive for me (for resale purposes), but I did buy a few old books, a huge frame, and a folding wooden chair.  All for $4.00.  Then, we were off and running.  We had walked through most of the neighborhood and I hadn’t bought another thing (except puzzles for my 3 1/2 year old, cookies for the boy and a brownie for me.)  This day was going to be a bummer.
Then, I spotted a Frenchy chest of drawers with great hardware (and stickers and a nasty paint job.)  It was very sturdy, solid wood and had dove-tailed drawers.  The price was more than I wanted to pay, given all of the work that was going to go into it, so I asked if they would sell it for less.  The owner took the price down by almost half!  Sold!
We hoofed it back to the van, picked up the dresser and went down the last street in the car.  I spotted some curvy chairs and screeched to a halt.  I purchased this French provincial chair for a song.  The frame needs to be repainted and, of course, I’m going to reupholster it and it’s going to look fabulous.
The best part is that the gentleman who sold me the chair has a whole storage shed full of furniture that he wants to get rid of.  I gave him a card and I’m hoping he’ll call.
So, we headed home and I stopped at one last yard sale on the way.  It didn’t look promising…1980’s crafts, dated furniture, dirty toys, mangled Christmas decor…but then, among the rubbish, I spotted these…
…a stack of four Ironstone plates.  I knew they were Ironstone without even turning them over, but I did to see what kind of hallmarks they had.  I scooped up the stack and tried to stay calm.  I made my best I’m-buying-this-old-junky-stack-of-plates-and-they-are-nothing-special face and then walked to the car, my excitement bubbling over.  “I just robbed these people!”  I told my MIL.  She looked at me with a curious face.  How much did I pay?  A dime a piece!  Robbery, I tell you.  I’m waiting for the police to come to my door any minute.
I have a lot of projects in the works, so I thought I would give you a sneak peek of one before I am incarcerated.
To top off my great day of yard sales, my very sweet and generous MIL took me to the outlet mall to go clothes shopping.  I found a heap of good stuff at GAP, AE, and Old Navy.  Cute clothes.  Yay!  Like I said, I’m a girl.
Did anyone else score big at yard sales or outlet malls today?

  1. A dime! What the heck can you buy for a dime these days? Your plates I guess! What hallmark did they have? I sort of like the fabric on that chair too. Unless it's velvety, then not so much. Did you hand paint those leave? Dumb question. Ack! I wish I could paint.

  3. I went to a community yard sale also and found zilch, nadda, nuffin. LOVE the chair and those plates…a dime! Wowzers. Turn out the lights and don't answer the door, just in case the police show up. 😉

  4. I didn't hit any sales today.. but I scored BIG at my aunt's shop. It was once a flower shop and she's cleaning house- which means, it's all coming to mine!

  5. What the heck!!! I scour for a chair like that and can't even find one worth paying money for!!! Well I did find one on craigslist and I love it but he wants $60 and I don't want to pay that and he is not budging on price!!! I'm so mad at you!! And those plates!!! GRR!!!!!

  6. Two doors up from me, my neighbor was having a yard sale, husband got $200 golf club for $20, and I got a large antique mirror for $10. The best deal was scored by the 8 year old. They had a lifesize cut out of a woman(painted white, chippy, charming) that looked art deco, the child paid $1 for it, it was marked $5. She bargained to the dollar, litteraly!

  7. Love that chair! Can't wait to see what your project is all about. No thrifting for me today. I went to Good Will, but that was just to drop stuff off. Gotta to that to kinda even things out, right? After that, we went to our city's first annual Indie Craft Parade and had a blast. I did buy a few things because I gotta support my fellow crafters.

  8. Start the Car!

Reminds me of that commercial where they show a lady runniong out of Ikea yelling for her husband to start the car because she thinks she was under charged for her purchases and she doesn't want to get caught.

Love the chair. Can't wait to see what you do with it. Ironware is new to me.

  9. My gosh, Marian. You can't even buy a piece of gum for a dime nowadays! Awesome finds. Can't wait to see what you do with everything. Call me if you need bail money.

  10. You had a great day all the way around! I love that chair. The lines and detail are fabulous. Can't wait to see what you do with it. I didn't do any yard sales today. I plugged away at getting my website almost done. It's taking me forever! Have a nice Sunday, Marian.

  11. Don't you just love when you find something as cheap as those ironstone plates? Don't worry, we will all come visit you in jail. I love all your other purchases too. That chair is going to be beautiful!!! The leaf design on the burlap is beautiful!! Love & blessings from NC!

  12. I was putting myself in timeout from yard sales today, til I woke up and saw a yard sale sign on the stop sign by the corner of my house…I couldn't resist. I found 3 awesome old doors, for 3.00 a piece. I did the same thing, acted like they where no big deal, I told him my mom was looking for some old doors for a shed, and then I ran home as fast as I could to show my husband. I love that feeling! PS do you have any good ideas for decorations such as boards, shelves, stuff, ect ect to decorate a boys football room. I'm stumped! Got the furniture and everything put in the room, but now to decorate…. And congrats about HGTV, thats so exciting!

  14. I love that chair. Why, oh why, can't I ever find that kind of stuff??? By the way, thanks for mentioning my buffet on your post from Thursday. I drool over your stuff. Needless to say, you made my day noticing my buffet. Thanks!

  15. wow…can i come shopping with you next time around?!
you scored big -both in old and new!
love your goodies and can't wait to see the makeovers of the furniture pieces.

  16. Don't you just love finding a bargain that make you feel like a thief. Love the chair and I can imagine you are going to amazing things with it. Congrats on the HGTV tutorials, you will be great.

  17. I love reading about your adventures and I was too lazy to hop over from google reader to wish you congrats on HGTV. You so deserve it and I can't wait to see your new shopping space.

  18. Wow, 10 cents a piece, that is crazy, but doesn't it feel awesome to get a steal like that! Makes you feel kinda giddy! I scored some awesome stuff at Goodwill, Marshall's and Kmart (of all places) yesterday! I'll posting about it tomorrow, but for now, I got an antique hat box, with the velvet pill box style hat still inside!!! $1.95 for that little gem! An old frame for $1, couple cloths items for my Little Monkey, and a 1 quart ice cream maker for $3.95. Marshall's find, a t-shirt for $2. Kmart, a t for Monkey for $2. Not bad! Not as awesome as finding iron stone for 10 cents, but still not bad!
Oh, for those of us who are totally dense, and don't do abbreviated language, what does MIL stand for? Sorry.

  19. Big sales at Macy's!! I got some tops for 75% off and I had a coupon which they let me use as well for $10.00 my total purchase!!!!
I am a girl too!! Ha!!

  20. Miss Mustard Seed, I read your blog all the time but rarely comment — just wanted to pop on and tell you that your pictures are beautiful and I always look forward to reading what you're up to. That stenciled burlap just gave me some inspiration for an old burlap lamp shade i've got in the garage….

  21. So, while you are incarcerated, what are your decorating plans for your cell?
Congrats on the super score. Loving the stenciling on the lampshade.

  22. Awesomely fun finds!! I wish I could find such great stuff. I'll have to wait till spring for garage sales now and our thrift stores ain't so hot in the gotta have it dept.

  23. Miss Mustard,

You scored! I can't wait to see what you do with the chair and chest. What are the hallmarks on ironstone—I love it and don't have any. I'd like to start collecting but am not sure what to look for other than the chalky, milky white dishes with a heavy feel to them.

  24. I was listening to the police scanner this morning and heard there was a APB out for you on the plates and the chair. 😉
OMG! That chair is fabulous! I even like the fabric on it for fall but if it's stinky I know I'd have to swap it out stright away.

  25. What great finds! I was wondering if you'd be able to tell me anything about ironstone? I don't know anything about it, but I found two little custard cups that look kind of like the very bottom plate in your stack only it's darker… do they ALL have maker's marks on them? These say nothing so I don't know how to tell what they are! Thanks for any help you may be able to give me.

PS. I read your blog EVERY day and was so in love with everything you had at Lucketts, I wish I could have gone, but alas… I am all the way in Washington state!!

  26. I actually love the fabric ON the chair now. Those brass tack-nails are sweet!

Did you do a post a while back on helpful hints to search for on CL for frency chairs? Other words to search, etc.? I could have sworn you did, but I can't find it 🙂
    Nice Haul!
    Kate

  27. First time I seen this much stylish and simple chairs. I really like its design. It is excellent and looks very attractive to keep in dinning room.
