Alternative to Seagrass & Jute

Over the last few months, I’ve been switching out most of the rugs in my house to seagrass and jute.  I’ve kept a few wool rugs, but I’m really enjoying the neutral color and rich texture brought to a space by natural grass rugs.  I will admit, though, as lovely as they are, there are a couple of downsides.  One is that they shed fibers and dust.  I’m used to huge fur balls with wool rugs, so jute shedding is tame in comparison.  It is a little annoying, though, and can be a big problem for people with allergies.

So, when Yasmin of Decor Steals contacted me about testing out a rug that looks like jute or seagrass, but is a made of a synthetic material that doesn’t shed, unravel, etc., I agreed to give it a try.  I’m pretty set on rugs, but my guest room floor has been naked for a while (my apologies to my in-laws!)  So, I rolled it out in the guest room.

I think it’s a great alternative to a natural fiber rug and, as a huge bonus, it can be hosed off, so it’s great for eating areas, homes with pets, play rooms, or indoor/outdoor spaces like porches.

The rug has a flat weave and it doesn’t feel scratchy underfoot, which is another complaint about some jute rugs, especially.  I wouldn’t describe it as super soft or plush, though…more like a berber carpet.

The only category where jute and seagrass rugs pull ahead, in my opinion, is when it comes to having “soul.”  (That’s the kind of statement Jeff would roll his eyes at and then go on for three minutes about how much he needs a rug with some soul and one that is lacking soul would never do.)  What I mean by “soul” is that they have a texture and life about them that can’t be replicated with synthetic materials, although, as you can see in the pictures, this one comes very close.  I want to be honest in this review, so I wanted to point that out.

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you may be thinking, “I haven’t seen that guest room for a while!”  Yes, you haven’t.  That’s because I’ve been using it as a dumping ground as I’ve been working on other parts of the house.  The parts not in the photographs above are evidence of that…

The guest room is on my list, though.  It doesn’t need a total overhaul…just a little refresher and some cleaning out obviously.  I’ll share more on that later.

Anyway, the rug reviewed today is available through Decor Steals as their Deal of the Day!  It comes in 5.3 X 7.6 and 6.7 X 9.6 and the pads will be available through Decor Steals as well.

And, what’s a Decor Steals feature without a sneak peek of steals around the corner and a giveaway!  Here are some steals to look out for soon…

Those are some awesome goodies!

  14. SO EXCITED about today’s Decor Steals deal! I have allergies, so I’ve been putting off getting a jute rug, so hopefully this will be the perfect solution for our home! Definitely one of my favorite deals!

  15. I love all of the steals! Having a hard time picking just one, but if having to chose just one, would have to be the French Three Tier Wire Basket….can do so much with that!

  16. I just received my 16″ boxwood wreath from Decor Steals. It is WONDERFUL! I love the 2-level wire caddy that they have in the pick steals & I keep waiting for the spinning organizer you have shown on here to come back again.

  17. I LOVE the rug and could use in several rooms in my home/cabin. I like the twirly divided piece above in this post and it would be great for organizing in my craft room.

  18. These rugs look really good, I have been waiting for something like this to put in a porch area we use constantly. I like the fact that they can be hosed off!

  19. I’ve bought several things for decor steals and I love them all!! I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE one of the rugs too. It’s my favorite, by far, on their website right now!

  20. Wow, I absolutely love the rug! As much as I love natural fiber rugs, the shedding has always been an issue. It’s great to have such an attractive alternative.

  21. Love the rug! The larger size would fit nicely in our living room! I visited the web site and also like the metal dish rack.

  22. Just subscribed to the decor steals newsletter…love the current daily rug deal and anything equestrian!! Rug would be ideal with our rescue kitties who have their claws! Have shied away from natural fiber rugs for this reason. Love your blog by the way! Looked for your products at Lucketts this weekend!

  23. We own a horse farm so I’m anxious for the horse statue to become available, of course! (Wracking my brain trying to think of a place I could use that rug. It’s awesome.)

  24. Since I’ve been looking for a rug I would certainly love this one…I think it looks just like a sea grass one.

  25. Oh goodness, your guest room made my heart smile. So much about it reminds me of my Grandma’s house – the furniture, that wonderful bedspread, and even the “dumping ground”! She just passed away two months ago and I’ve been extra homesick for all things Grandma, so this peek at your guest room was really welcome. Thank you, Marian!

  26. That rug would be great in my house with a husband and two kids with allergies! I like the rug and the three-tiered basket.

  27. I have been receiving their daily emails for several months now. Your right, they have great items at a very good price. Today I was most taken with the rug. I think it would look great under dining table. Should hold up with one messy kid and 4 dogs and 2 cats. I am also interested in the rotating divided organizer. Have to make up my mind very soon, before they are gone.

  28. Marian,
Thank you thank you thank for this timely post! As I sit here and look at my gorgeous 100% Jute rug that is rolled and wrapped back up waiting for UPS to pick it up today for return. I saw yours a month or so ago and fell in love and searched and searched and got a great deal on one. It looks exactly like yours. It was thick, beautiful and I laid it out and LOVED on it all day. I literally left the room and came back in to see it all day long! lol
Then I started to notice little “feathery” pieces of lose “loops” if you will. I would push them back through since you can’t cut them because they are loops. And I noticed them all over the rug throughout the day and the next. (I could live with the debris under the rug, no biggie) but we have dogs and cats and was this from them walking on it? I don’t know. I watched them like a hawk and didn’t see that but who knows? Was the weave loose? All I know is its on its way back and I was heartbroken!
So the idea of a rug that looks like it but isn’t…I love that. And I get the “soul” comment because my gorgeous jute had it! Can you tell me about the weave of this “look alike” maybe for kids? pets? Thank you!
And I just signed up for emails yesterday with Decor Steals and liked their facebook page and google plussed it and pinned it! lol…! I would love to win this one! I love the current rug deal today of the 8X10

  30. I have to say, the Rug is my pick. I may have to actually buy that baby for my dining room which needs some texture.

  31. My fave on their site today would be the larger size of the Steal of the Day; I think I am going to order this for my family room.

  32. AND I Plus-Oned them on Google Plus.

  44. I love the look of the jute inspired rug!
I also signed up for their email and liked them on facebook. Hopefully That will help me keep track of there awesome deals. 🙂

  45. I love the rug. I have been looking for one for the dining room, having had a jute rug in there before. I have been looking for a better option. This is perfect.

  46. I love the rug. However, I absolutely adore the horse shown above! I hope I don’t miss that one! 🙂

  47. I love the idea of a non-shedding jute look rug for my asthmatic daughter – we love the look of jute, but she’s never been able to tolerate the fiber shed. I really like {Farmhouse Vintage} Mason Jar Oil Light Lids, Set Of 2 – very cute! They would look great in our home! Thanks so much!

  48. I would love to have one of the “jute look” rugs. I usually love everything they have! 🙂

    Blessings

    1. OOps! I had a little mishap while leaving my comment.
I currently receive Decor Steals Daily email. I have been looking for a nice rug for my family room that won’t break the bank. I’ve decided to give this one a try. I love the fact that Miss Mustard Seed has already reviewed this pick!

  49. Oh my, how I love that rug but I totally love the oil light mason jar. I may just have to buy some for my son’s upcoming wedding.

  50. I am a Decor Steals e-mail subscriber. I would like the jute-inspired rug for my dining room.

  51. I guess the only comment I have about the new rug is that is made out of “durable polypropylene” – another chemical combination that can cause other bad side effects in our bodies and environment. Synthetic is not always better, even more so when made overseas in unhealthy factories. Just sayin….

  52. The jute inspired rug steal inspires me the most because 1) I am in need of a good neutral rug for an outdoorsy type living space and 2) this one can be hosed off (!).

  53. I have rugs all through my home(s) because of the wood floors. This rug looks like something I would purchase – easy care is what I like and neutral is another great factor.

  54. Just LIKED this rug on the Décor Steals site. Thanks for inspiring us and pointing this one out. I already subscribe to their emails and have liked their Facebook page. Would so appreciate the giveaway so that I could afford to get this rug for my dining room. I am in the midst of updating that room and it would be the frosting on the cake. Thank you!!!!

  55. I love the synthetic ‘jute’ rugs. I am purchasing one to try out in my entry way. I do wish they had a runner available, though.

  56. I like the look of the rug. At one time, there was concern about synthetics “offing”. I that an issue?

  57. I love the rug and receive their emails daily. Have ordered quite a few things from Decor Steals and I love them all!

  58. I love the synthetic jute rug today, both sizes, but I purchased the larger one and hope to win to purchase a second one or a rug pad. Thanks!

  59. I subscribe to the Decor Steals newsletter and feel like they are part of my family! (right after cousin Marian)

  60. how does the synthetic seagrass compare healthwise / toxinwise with wool and natural fiber rugs?

  61. I gave Decor Steals a +1 on Google plus, and would rate both of you higher if I could!

  62. Liked them on Facebook, +1 them on Google, signed up for their newsletter and I am especially fond of the two tier cart.
    Good luck to everyone!

  63. I’m loving the idea of a rug I can hose off that doesn’t look like it’s an outdoor rug. I also love that 3 tiered basket though.

  64. Hi Marion,

I just purchased the larger of the two rugs today! I receive their e-mails every day and have purchased quite a few things from them! I have liked them again on B!

  65. I am thrilled with that rug! I have been wanting something like this – the look for seagrass and the no fuss cleaning. Great! I may just order one of these.

  66. I love this rug! It would look perfect in our sunroom and with two kiddos and a dog, I like that it can be rinsed off pretty easy!

  67. I really like that three tiered metal fruit stand in the extended steals, and also the “jute” rug.

  68. Oh Thank you. My dreams of a look in easy maintenance. I NEED this rug. Sorry it’s my fave look since living in South Carolina. Missing that here but striving for it in Washington state.

  69. I liked there Facebook, subscribe to there page through my email, my favorite is the wire basket stand in the pick steal section although think I need to order a rug for my new basement. Thanks for sharing.

  70. I love the rug- I have been reluctant to get a jute or seagrass rug before because we don’t wear shoes in the house and I don’t care for the way it feels, but this would be the best of both worlds.

  71. I liked Decor steals on FB. I love the French 3 tiered wire basket!!
Thanks for the chance to win!!

  72. Love the French Three-tiered Wire Basket and the wood slat chair that is a future steal.

  75. Love the pillow in their extended steals section! Hope that boxwood wreath you showed in this post comes available again, it’s gorgeous!

  82. My favorite photo by far…..the pile of “stuff” in the guest room!!! You ARE real! :-)!

    Kellene

  83. If they had a “love” button on fb I would hit it for Décor Steals! But I can only “like” them.

  84. I resigned up for Decor Steals emails. I’d unsubscribed because my finances are limited at the moment and i was trying not to be tempted by their fabulous things… But you inspired me to resubscribe!

  85. Oh, my, I’d love to have the French Three Tiered Wire Basket. I can see my sewing supplies in Mason jars lovingly displayed on my sewing table perfectly in that wonderful space-saving beauty. Just wish there was some room in the budget for it. So if I was the lucky one, that’s what I’d pick! Thanks, Jackie

  86. I’m not on Facebook but I pinned the dish caddy…

btw – I’m with you on thinking about the soul of things I buy… I avoid synthetic products 99% of the time, so the rug wouldn’t be an option for me…

  87. I’m already getting the Decor Steals emails. So many pretty things, so much fun to look and dream!

  88. I would choose the rug–great alternative for us because of allergies, and polyprophylene (sp?) wears really well.

  89. Just subscribed to the Emails and liked them on FB. I had never heard of them and I LOVE their things! Oh my goodness, so many things look like flea market finds, but so much easier to just order online:)

And I am totally a fan of the rug–I do like the look of jute or seagrass, but it dents in if you set heavy furniture on it; and if water or snow or food gets on them—well forget about it! So this newer version with the look of natural fibers but the versatility of a synthetic–that’s for me:)

  90. Off-Topic
What is the manufacturer and pattern name of the blue & white dishes pictured on your homepage?

  91. Exactly what I’ve been looking for. I can use it in the hearthroom in winter and on the deck in summer! Perfect.

  124. My pick? The rug. I need a rug in my office and while I really want a white fur (fake of course) rug, I know it is something that is a bit silly when I have 4 cats and a black (shedding) dog! So this might be a perfect fit!!

  133. The rug looks really nice. I have a jute rug, but the grandkids complain that they can’t walk barefoot on it.

  134. I love the synthetic jute rug! I also rally like the future steal dish rack/china display basket. I can see that holding a bunch of art supply tools.

Winning the rug would be PRICELESS,

  153. Thanks for sharing. I was looking for a rug for my vacation cottage rental and I think this is a good solution. I bought the large rug today, and signed up for the newsletter.

I recently bought a jute rug from pier one and while it looks great in the cottage it is heavy to lift to vacuum under and sheds a lot. Additionally I was turned off by the dirt that was in it…I had to do a lot of vacuuming to get it out. I wanted to buy the jute rug like you bought from pottery barn, however since I am renting out the cottage when I am not there, I didn’t feel I could justify putting in something that nice.

I can’t wait to see the decor steals rug and see how it looks in my cottage.

  154. I love getting their newsletter in my mailbox everyday. It’s amazing how quickly they ship your orders, too.

  155. That rug looks pretty, but I agree with you….there’s just something to be said about a natural rug. Right now we have a large patterned wool rug in our living room but have thought about changing it out to a sea grass rug….just so I’m free to explore with more decorating options with a neutral background. However, I am worried that a sea grass rug in our main area wouldn’t be comfortable. I’ve used them in other areas, but not really where we sit/play (we have 2 little kiddos so we’re on the floor a lot!) Anyhow…wanted to know what you thought of yours in your living room thus far….thanks!!

Oh, and as far as Decor Steals (fun giveaway btw) I looove the wire tierd baskets—just lovely. 🙂

  156. Thank you for sharing this rug. I am allergic to jute and have always loved the look of it.
    This is a great alternative.

    I love this deal!!!

  157. I have always refrained from using the grassy rugs due to the shedding & allergies of our Grandkids. So the synthetic rug would be perfect for under my kitchen table where we eat, talk, laugh, & share our latest happenings. I think we became not just a family but BFF’s around our table! It’s a very important area for us, so it has to be just right.

My pick on the Extended Steal is the mason jars lids with wicks! I Love mason jars & those would be a real interesting addition to my mantel.

My Pick Steal is that awesome Tea Caddy!! I will be watching my new newsletter for more information as to when those little dumplings come in 😉

I am so thrilled that I came across you guys.

  158. Well, that was easy! I would love to have about five of those mason jar lamp lids. This is the perfect weather for a little glow in the evenings.

  159. I like the wire tiered baskets. I already receive their newsletter and I liked their FB page.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  160. This is my second comment, I already subscribe to Decor Steal’s newsletter – love them!

  161. I have my eye on that dish rack under future steals! Also, I would love to have that rug for my patio!
    Thanks,
    Charlotte T

  162. I already subscribe to their newsletter! I love seeing Decor Steals in my inbox everyday at 10am!
    Thanks,
    Charlotte T

  163. Entry #1 – Out of today’s steal and the extended steals, I must say I like the rug the most. Angel wings are pretty too, but one needs a lot of free wall space for those (which I don’t have).

  164. oh man… It’s tough to pick the best deal today. I LOVE those wings, but a faux jute rug is appealing. I love the look of my jute rug in the dining room, but mine sheds dust like CRAZY.

  165. Entry #1–My favorite is one of the “coming soon” steals you posted…since I don’t know what it is, I will just call it the two-tiered metal twirly thing! 🙂

  166. I love the horse the most. We have horses in the backyard and everything in the house is about horses! I subscribed, liked and did the google thing.

  167. I love the rug. I have been looking for a runner in my kitchen and I think this just might fit the bill. I have been following you for a long time and I want to try your paint. I just wonder if it would be good for kitchen cabinets, do you think it would hold up to constant use? I just got a short church pew and am excited to paint it with the distressed look. Anyway, thanks for the rug info. Jan

  168. Signed up for their newsletter. I have to say, I just stumbled on your blog yesterday and I am in love. Your style is amazing! Thank you!

  169. Hi, me again. I subscribed to Decor Steals, Liked and followed on Facebook, and finally gave them a Google+. Hope I win as I can use the money to pay for the runners 🙂

  170. i love the pair of large angel wings. Actually, might just have to buy them for my daughter’s room..

  171. I love the rug and need a new one in my living room. With two dogs one of which is big and hairy, they have really worn out my old wool one. Thanks for the opportunity to enter this giveaway!

  172. I like the French 3 Tier Wire Basket, but I also like the faux jute rug. I think the synthetic material would hold up better with my kitten.

  173. Definitely the rug that you tried out! I love jute rugs and I love that it won’t shed and is easier to clean.
    Thanks so much! Meg

  174. Entry #2, Although I like all of them and I do love those wings…I’m in a house full of boys….so my pick is the rug! I have two in the hall and in my kitchen and I love the texture and natural color. I don’t like how mine unravel and shed though so this rug seems like a great substitute.

  175. Love the rug! Never thought I would go for an interior rug that was made out of polypropylene, but this could be a winner.

  176. I’ve already signed up for their emails and love them! They are a bit distracting though, since I always end up going to their site and look at whats going on. 😉

  177. Count me in on the contest. The rug looks great in the room and I like the red toile. I just found a stool like the one in the room. I have a big fern on it, but yours looks cute as a bedside table.

  178. Love this rug! I subscribed to the newsletter and liked Decor Steals on Facebook, plus I gave it a +1 on Google. BTW, I’m a new reader and absolutely love this blog. I want a house that looks like yours!

  179. Entry #1 – I’m LOVING the Farmhouse Vintage Mason Jar Oil Lights with lids!!
    Entry #2 – Subscribed!
Entry #3 – Liked on Facebook!
    SO fun!

  180. Entry #3 Complete.
I forgot on my Number 1 to post, that I would LOVE to have a new Rug like the one you are showing. =)

  181. Love the rug! Today’s deal tin canisters could have a lot of uses around this house, but I love the pick a steal – dish caddy, that is adorable.

  182. Have been subscribed and receiving emails for a long while now, and have bought a lot of things.

  183. Love the rug for my front hall and the Tin canisters…yum. But the metal baskets are always a favorite of mine, can one have too many???

  184. I am already a member of the Decor Steals family. I have successfully ordered from their site. While I am not a fan of hanging animal heads, I do like the French Candle Chandelier. And $50 would allow a lot of shopping for the money!

  185. I have also been looking for this beautiful synthetic alternative jute rug featured. Do you know the brand or where it can be bought? Thanks!

  186. I am searching for an alternative to Jute rugs. I like the looks, unfortunately cannot have it on my patio because I live in a rainy state. Can you please forward me the info on the alternative rug that you tried out. Im praying it looks like jute. Thank you so much Tee

  187. I would love to have the name and manufacturer info as well. Could you forward those to my email please?

  188. Looking for the name and manufacturer of the sea grass rug alternative please
    Thank you

  189. Would be great to have the name/manufacturer info. Is it possible for you to provide? Thank you.

  190. Nice worthless blog post. No way to find the rug on this page at all. Brand name? model name? Material? Nice job. /s

  191. Dear Miss Mustardseed, where can we buy this rug? Who makes it? I’ve looked all over Deal steals website and I cannot find it. Thank you

  192. I love this idea of an alternative to juteBut you feel to ever give any information of the name of the rug so it’s impossible to find it would you be able to give the name of the product

the new fridge

The day of the delivery was bittersweet.  After over a month of fetching milk, butter, cheese, eggs, leftovers, and such from the garage fridge, we were going to have a working refrigerator in our kitchen again.  That was the sweet part.  The bitter part was knowing  I would no longer
