Living Room – Finished?

After staying up late last night, I had a “finished” room.  I walked my husband through it this morning and he smiled and proclaimed, “Wow, this room is done!”  I realized I felt uncomfortable with the proclamation.  “Um…well, it’s about 90% done.  I still need to…”  and I proceeded to rattle off a list of about ten things.  He gave me “the look” that all husbands give wives like me.  If you’re like me, you know the look.  He smiled, shook his head and went about the day, allowing me to call a finished room unfinished.
So, here’s my finished room (that we’re only going to call finished and I reserve the right to revoke that title.)  This is a photo tour and I will go into detail in future posts.  I’ll share before and after pictures of the chairs and sofa, how I made the pillows, my finishing technique on the mirror, a chair upholstery tutorial…everything.  For now, just sit back and enjoy the tour.

…and what’s a room if it’s not lived in?  My youngest son wandered into my photo session and I couldn’t resist sharing this picture.

Stay tuned through the next couple of weeks for all of the details and make sure to check back tomorrow evening for a very tasty giveaway!

  1. Hey wait, is this the same room that used to be blue?
I love it, looks totally dreamy and I WISH I could find a curio cabinet like that!

  2. This caught my eye and made me smile. I had a small place with my first two children where the view from the dining room was very much like the placement of windows, thearch, wood floors or your home. How lovely and serene your color palette looks.

    Merry Christmas.

  3. The mirror is to die for! Love that finish. Can't wait for that post. Upholstery is still like a huge pool to me. I'm sure I will love it once I'm into it, but scared of that first, big plunge. Thank you for all of the inspiration!

  4. It is all beautiful, but I'm in complete and utter love with those chairs. I look forward to the tutorial as my quest is to find ones just.like.them!!!!

  5. You have such wonderful style. I love your living room. Very inviting. I am looking forward to your tutorials and breakdowns. I am loving those wing chairs and the pillows on them.

  6. I guess I am like you a bit Marian, I told my hubby our bedroom was finished but….he just smiled and said it was finished. I still have 3 things I want to do in there, but they are not musts, so it will be a while. I really love your blue mirror, it is so old fashioned looking, yet sort of modern too. you did a great job! The whole room feels peaceful and inviting and relaxing.

  7. I'm totally convinced you know how to do everything.

Goodness… the room is stunning! Soft, warm, homey. I so agree with Kalee, your staging looks lived in, which I LOVE.

What else I really like is you don't conform to every detail on what's 'in'. That you stayed gold accents is so much softer than black. It has more of a vintage feel due to that.

    LOVE.

  8. Wow – Love. That. Room! Everything about it is fantastic. The colors, the furniture treatments. From your blog, I know how thrifty you are, but it couldn't look better if you had spent $100,000! What an inspiration! Linda

  9. Absolutely beautiful room…and I can't wait to read how you accomplished it all.

When my husband and I were first married and in our first home, my mother came to visit. My husband was showing her around and he said, "And we have everything completely decorated. We're all finished. Nothing left to do."

My mom looked at him and said, "You have no idea who you married, do you?"

Twenty years and many houses later, he knows what she meant.

  10. WOW! Your living room looks gorgeous! At first glance I thought it was a picture you pulled from the internet that originally came from a magazine. Truly beautiful!

  11. Hi, girlfriend! I'm so glad you can enjoy this lovely room over the holidays. The chairs turned out beautifully. There's only one thing in the room I would change… Merry Christmas, Marian!

  12. Where do I start?! Ok lets just say, I LOVE everything in here!!
I especially love that mirror and the colour of it is strikingly beautiful! Those cushions on the chair..ooh-la-la!
What an amazing job you've done on this room. And your son is the finishing touch..lol.. so sweet! He seems to think so too!
    Have a happy week…

  13. I have to tell you, that I am enjoyig all these wonderful posts on your decorating….it's a very comfortable yet femenine look – it reminds me a lot of DustyLu's interior of her home…
and there are strong lines in your designs it seems – I love the effect on those chairs – the light blue is so pretty rubbed like that on the wood….

  14. Oh, my. What a pretty, pretty room! Marian, I have said this before, but I just love the fact that your rooms reflect YOU, your unique style and not a copycat of the latest mail order catalog. Your chairs are gorgeous, and I'm crazy in love with your pillows on them tied with ribbons. You have truly outdone yourself. I too am looking forward to all the tutorials.

  15. Oh, my!! Your room is complete and total HEAVEN!! Everything is so beautiful….I can't pick one single thing I like the best. All of it is marvellous!

  16. It's beyond amazing. I am in love with your drapes. It's just stunning. Gorgeous. Can't even come up with enough words. Enjoy it.

  17. Wow!! Gor-ge-ous!!!! Wow! This is a dream room! Right now I have a blank slate, no furniture whatsoever, I will be using this as a model! I can't wait for the house renovations to start so I can get to this!!!

  18. Absolutely stunning! Everything is my favorite…especially the mirror and the chairs. 🙂 I cannot wrap my head around the "how" you get all these things done with 2 little ones. I so wish I had your energy!

You have done a fabulous job ~

  19. BREATHTAkING! How wonderful it must feel to have a completed room (minus your list). I'm still on a quest for that feeling but I'm patient. I love those chairs & your tie top pillows…can't wait for the tutorial on those! The pillow fabric looks burlapish but not quite. What is it? Yum. I bet you've never heard this before but YOU'RE AMAZING! I'm will Gyspy Heart on how you manage to get so much done. Erin (Like Grandma's) and I were JUST discussing how you amaze us in the productivity department and we're not lazy people! I'm going until 2 a.m. and still behind. Ha!

    Hugs,
    Jami

  20. Those curtains! They are the most perfect touch. Each detail of your room is so unbelieveably classic and wonderful and to top it off with that bold color just puts the cherry on top. LOVELY!!

  21. It's very lovely, but your title asks a question. Finished? Your followers by now would know, the answer is of course not. Your home is about change especially the rooms you show us on your blog. Can't wait to see the next generation.

  22. Hey Ms Marion. What a beautiful room. Can you tell me where in tarnation you got that beautiful slip cover for your couch from? Love it
