Guest Bedroom Progress…

I spent some time in the guest room today, getting the space cleaned up, hanging up the lights and curtain rods, moving the furniture and hanging a few things on the wall.  Here’s how it’s coming along…

I’m going to make a cover for the bolster pillow, but just wrapped it in fabric for the visual.

I found a pair of pretty antique original German oil paintings on Ebay and knew they would be perfect for the space.

I was a little nervous that the sconces from Pottery Barn would stick out too far, but they really look fine.  My only complaint about them is that the on/off switch is almost on the floor, so it’s going to be a pain to use them.

They are so pretty, though.

I cut the fabric for the curtains, folded the excess for hemming over and clipped them up…again, as a visual until I have the time to sew them properly.  I’ll also pleat the top, so the folds are nice and neat.

I’m going to use more of the checkered fabric on this chair I purchased a few weeks ago.  It really is perfect in the space.

And I swapped out the chalkboard for a mirror.  It was about $20 to have one cut to size.  I love how it reflects the light and opens the space visually a bit more.

Someone asked about it in another post, so I’ll put minds to rest.  No, I’m not painting that dresser.  I love it just as it is.

Up next…painting the ceiling a pale blue and replacing the blah light fixture with a vintage chandelier.

…and I need to finish the dormer, which I couldn’t paint because of all of the junk in it.

I did take down the old curtains and one of my readers has already bought them and the matching pillow.  So, they are all ready to box up and send to her with my other shipments this week.

After spending most of last week sick in bed, I was ready to go!

The sunshine and warm weather definitely helped me along.

So glad you are feeling better. The room is coming along so nicely….Every time I see that bed I know it is the most beautiful bed I have ever seen!

    2. Nicole

A suggestion for the PB sconces -put a remote plug into the outlet and then plug the lamp into that and you will turn lights on/off with remote control. I have two accent lamps on the top of our bookshelves and it made my husband a little crazy that I just left them on all the time – it was a hassle to pull a chair or step stool to each side every time I needed to reach the switch so now it’s super easy to click the remote to turn both on or off -I know . . . such a first world problem and solution 😉 but just wanted to pass the idea along to you.

    3. Lora

…well, you could paint the body of the dresser…just not the pretty drawers! A little blue against the white walls?…and setting it apart from the wood floors? Just sayin’… Seriously, it’s all looking very cozy & very German-inspired! Lovely.

    4. Tante Mali

Oh … your guests will be kings and queens in this room!
      So very tastey
      All the best from Austria
      Elisabeth

    5. Toni

Put the lights on a remote control. I do that with lights that are difficult to turn on. 🙂

    6. Shelley

Love the new curtains and can’t wait to see the chair done in the same fabric. You really scored with the new are work from Ebay as well. Love how you make everything look so easy.
Glad to hear you are feeling better. Cheers from Maine.

    7. Sherry Morrison

Love the room. I would leave the yellow gold velvet chair as it is! It would compliment the
yellow in the headboard and provide a wonderful pop of color!

    8. Talitha

The color of the scones is perfect! I recently visited a Church that had I H S on the pulpit. It took me a little while to remember where I had seen it before, until it dawned on me that it was in Miss Mustardseed’s guest bedroom! Made me chuckle…. Googled IHS religious symbol (no, not during the sermon :-)), quite interesting!

    9. Sarah

Did you do the plank wall? If so, is there a tutorial for it?

    10. Elizabeth

I like the new curtains, but I LOVED the old ones! Sorry to see someone already purchased them. :(. I thumbed through your book again last night, it was beautifully done! I so enjoy reading your posts.
      Elizabeth

    11. Elizabeth

Oh, and I love the bed! You do beautiful work.

    12. Kaille

Marian, the room is coming along beautifully – I cannot wait to see it when you have finished putting your magic touches on everything. Can you tell me about your curtain fabric – what it is and where you found it? I have been searching for a large red buffalo plaid for a while without much luck.

      Glad you are feeling better!

      Kaille

    13. Stephanie Lipinski

I love your new curtains I am a sucker for checked fabric! You know, YOU are going to want to sleep in that room when your finished. You should do a give away. One night stay in the Miss Mustard Seed guest room!

    14. KC Schyvynck

It’s looking good!! I think I might put the patterned plates on the white wall instead…they wood really pop,

    15. Debbie Rejmer

Can you tell me the name of the fabric that you took down in the guest room?

    16. Kristin

Love, love, LOVE IT! So pretty and romantic. The bed is a total knock out. I’m in drool city! How did you do the paneling on the wall? We have plaster EVERYWHERE in our house-ceilings, just everywhere-ahhhh. I see that kind of paneling in my favorite magazines & books all the time and I was wondering if I could work it over plaster?

    17. Becky

It is looking lovely! I loved it before too. I would also like to know where you got the new curtain fabric. I have been looking for exactly that material for my daughters’room.

      • Miss Mustard Seed

The fabric was given to me by my aunt, so I’m not sure of the maker or pattern. Sorry! I’ll have to look around to see if I can find something similar.

    18. Jelena

Those sconces actually look really good with the painted bed.
I can’t wait to see what the chair would look like once you have had your way with it!

    19. Sheila Moore

Love how the room is coming along. I bought a chair just recently exactly like this one. Even has the same yucky gold frabric except mine has aburn in the seat. No worries though planning on re-doing for a charity auction in Sept. Looking forward to seeing how yours turns out. I’m thinking of doing something in a nautical theme. We live so close to the beach that I think it would go like gang busters.

    20. Desiree

Where did you get the mirror cut? I have a beautiful empty frame I’ve been debating what to do with.

      • April

I have my mirror cut at a local glass/window shop (they do everything glass, even car windows). Most shops charge $4 per cut, but mine only charges $1 and they glue the mirror into the frame for me! Love them!!!

MMS, I didn’t really believe you could pull your bed color combo off, but it and the room looks amazing! You certainly have courage and vision!!! Can’t wait to see all the finishing touches. 🙂

    21. Marilyn

I too like the red checkered curtains a lot! So Country Living!

    22. Jessica @ Dear Emmeline

Looking so pretty! I wasn’t sure how the bed would look when paired up with more accessories since it has a lot going on visually itself but seeing it coming together it’s looking great!

    23. teri

The room looks beautiful. You have done a fabulous makeover. My guest room is like a hoarder’s nest and I have now been inspired to finally do something about it… ♥

    24. Karla

The room is looking great. Can you tell me where you found the buffalo check fabric for the curtains?

    25. Kathleen

I just love how the room is turning out. The bed is so unique and perfectly painted.
I think the large red checked curtains and side chair will be a perfect compliment to the bed.
Yes leave the dresser alone . Also love the lights by the bedside which would be best if on a remote control. Makes life so much easier
I suggesest you sleep for a night in your guest room to see if you need any changes
You ar such an inspiration ! Love your blog Miss Mustard seed !

    26. Jeanie

The room is sure coming along beautifully and thanks for not painting that beautiful dresser. I have several old beautiful oak pieces that I would never even think of painting. I know……I am old school. What is the book of yours that Elizabeth thumbed through?

      • Miss Mustard Seed

I think she’s referring to the book I wrote! It’s called Inspired You…you can find it on Amazon.

    27. Pat

Everything looks beautiful! I’m so impressed with the mirror. I really thought doing that would be quite expensive so happy to know it isn’t. I love mirrors!

Like many others, I’d love to know the source for the buffalo check fabric. It looks more strawberry/raspberry colored to me but of course, different monitors reflect colors differently.

Can’t wait to see the finished room!

      xo
      Pat

      • Miss Mustard Seed

My aunt gave the roll of fabric to me, so I don’t know the maker. Yes, it is more raspberry in color than red.

    28. Melody

Oh Marian! It’s looking so lovely!!!!! Wish I had known about the old curtains and pillow, would have bought them myself! Happy to hear you’re feeling better!!

    29. Patricia Vail

I’m thinking you could auction off the room for a weekend to your readers!
It’s so impressing you found the German painting on ebay. Really lovely room.

    30. Kay

I am always impressed with your decorating, and I am hoping to be inspired by this bedroom. I am relieved to know that you aren’t painting the dresser – it is beautiful as is. Some things should be left as they are. Great idea about the remote control for lamps.

    31. Lori

Marion, love, love, love the bed. But those sconces in my opinion compete with the bed and frankly they are all I see when I look at that picture of the bed with the sconces. Totally takes away from the bed. I also see guests dodging the shades when they get up or go to bed or reach for something on a bedside table.

    32. Sydney Catlett

Another easy way to make your lamps easier to use would be to add a pull-chain light bulb socket where the regular socket is now. They are available in brass and black and should be easy to find at a home improvement or hardware store as well as on Amazon. There are many lamp rewiring tutorials online and it’s usually easy.

    33. Winnie

You might want to verify it, Marian, but I’m pretty sure that you can just add another line switch up higher on the cord where you want it and use that switch instead! They’re available everywhere and really easy to install on the cord. The room is really looking great!

    34. Sandy

LOVE LOVE LOVE! Can’t wait to see it with the blue ceiling…so much fun to witness the transformation! Thank you sweet Marian.

    35. Debra Travers

We have an old farmhouse and outlets were an issue. You can do what we did and plug a witeless switch into the outlet and then you can turn the lights off with a remote. Very inexpensive to do. Pretty room!

    36. Lee Caroline

It is all coming along wonderfully. I do love the chair you bought, it is exactly what I am looking for in my study but as yet not found anything over here. I also love those brass lamps beside the bed, they are very unusual and look fabulous. Can’t wait to see it all completed.

      Lee 🙂

    37. Carol

Such beautiful happy colors in your guest bedroom and I adore your new curtains- perfection!

    38. Terri Estey

The sconces are lovely! I cannot wait to see the chair with the new fabric–it should be fabulous! Is that what is called a Bergere? I’ve been trying to learn the names for different styles of furniture that I like. Great job on putting the room together!

    39. Jan

Your guest room looks so soft and cozy. If the ceiling is going to be blue, how about a sky ceiling?

    40. JP

It’s coming along, fabulously…I love that bed and the fabric you chose for the chair. I can’t wait to see what;s next!
      JP

    41. Terry

This room is coming along so beautifully! It feels weird to see you using such bright colors…please know this is a compliment!….I absolutely love the bed! I have the same style of lights in black and was thinking of placing one over each of my twins’ beds. Are yours working or just for design/decor purposes?
      Happy Tuesday!
      Smiles!
      Terry

    42. Pam

Did I miss a former post??…Because I LOVE your red & white draperies!! Did you purchase them ready made? You have such class & style!

    43. Pamela

still …….. Loving the bed! The checked curtains are magnificent! My question to you Marian is …. what are you going to do when its all perfect? Sell and start over? I’ve enjoyed watching you and your hubby transform this house into your home.

      muah! Pamela

    44. Anne

I would love to see a tutorial when you sew the curtains.

    45. Jo Ann

Marion, I’ll make a bet with you. I give you a year and those sconces will be gone! They are too large and take away from the bed. Your bed is fabulous! Inspirational to me for sure.

    46. Jeanine C

So glad you are feeling better! Even so, you have been busy!

The space looks so bright and cheery.

What a delight for your guest 🙂

    47. NaNcy

Lucky the guest who gets invited for a sleepover. Your bed is my all-time favorite but like a few other readers, the larger than life sconces distract from the beauty of the bed. When you’re out foraging for antiques again, maybe you should look for smaller antique sconces that would do more justice to your artistry. Also, paint the stool next to the bed which to me is another drawback. Awesome job otherwise…I shall be waiting for that sleepover invite!

    48. Sheila

What a great room Marion !!! Love the lamps. Too bad the switch is way down on the bottom. Can you rewire them ?

      Sheila

    49. Alice Hanson

      Marion,
On your lamps, you can purchase touch metal for off and on. I got my “thingy plug in” at Lowes. It works great on my bed lamps. Love that bed!
      Smiles, alice

    50. Pamela Bolton

The room is really looking good. I just drool over that bed. I think that it is your prettiest (is that a word?) painted piece ever. One suggestion for dressing that gorgeous bed – a longer bolster to go across the width of the bed. Just a suggestion.

    51. Cindy

Oh my gosh i love what you’re doing with this room! The gingham curtains are so darn cute with it all too I’m such a freak over that size check gingham… love it…

      Cindy

    52. vicky

I have been searching for a large gingham print in a neutral color. Where did you find your beautiful color fabric?

    53. Ginger Marshall

All I can say to the lamp switch being on the floor it is “clap on/clap off”!

    54. Martina

      Hello miss Mustard !
