a business purchase

There are times when I see something that is fabulous and I really want it. Now that I have a blog and antiques business, I have a reason to buy some of those “must haves.”  Perpetual calendars have been on my radar for a while, but I never felt a burning desire for one until I spotted one on The Savoy Flea.  It was all over after that.  One must be mine.  I needed one.  You know, for photo shoots.  For my business.  Finding one is a part of my job.

OK, that is a bit of an excuse, but it is partly true.  You are going to see this in a lot of pictures.  I purchased it from the Etsy shop AM Radio

Sigh.  Love.
Are there any “must haves” you’ve been drooling over lately?

  1. My dad had one on his desk in the '60s, and I just acquired it last week. So ironic that you just purchased an identical one; when I saw your post I thought, "Why did someone post my calendar?" Enjoy…it's a very sweet nostalgic piece.

  2. Hi, I love your new purchase, it's fabulous!!
My "must haves" lately are more vintage grain sacks and more dress forms!! I'm completely obsessed!
    Have a beautiful night.
    Sincerely,
    Melinda

  3. Always. I got one of my 'needs' within the last week…an old library card catalog. I found it through the classified ads, but thankfully it was missing some of the right "key word" so not EVERYONE found it…just me! Then would you believe it…last night I was GIVEN another card catalog! I'm delighted, and can't wait to do something with them! But now….I need a toast rack…

  4. Love the calendar! I must have a Janome sewing machine…anything that's better than my $99 Singer special. Doesn't help that I dropped it today & now I can't sew in reverse. 🙁

  5. I just had one of these moments this past weekend, aren't they the best?! I have been lusting over antique seltzer bottles for-ever but could never justify spending the hefty price tag usually associated. This weekend, not only did I stumbled across a well priced seltzer bottle, it was Czech blue glass and honestly, I had to pick my jaw off the floor! You can check it out, along with my other antique items I added to my collection, here:

I would love to know what you think!!

  6. LOVE that calendar…fun that you can use it as a business purchase, too! 🙂 I've been looking for months for the right sized table/right look for our living room/school room for daughter to do school on, and I found one today at the second hand store for $2!!! Yes, it's not really for me, and not really "fun" but it is fantastic when you're looking for something specific, and you FINALLY see it…and it's only $2!!! Of course, now I'm off to paint it. 🙂

  7. Pshh… thanks to you, a dough bowl, and one of these super cute little calendars. 😉 Also, a channel back, winged chair (with claw feet). I finally found a channel back chair with the claw feet I wanted, but it's higher than I want to pay ($45 for a newbie upholsterer- and randomly popped up on CL), but I finally found a channel back wing chair TODAY without the claw feel for $11. It feels SO good to finally find what you're looking for, doesn't it?!

  8. Oh, that's cool! My current obsession is an old wire egg basket. My chickens just started laying eggs and I NEED a vintage basket to put their eggs in (and photograph, ahem.) 🙂 I'm also always on the look out for vintage cuff links and tie clips, as my awesome husband still appreciates and wears such oddities.

  9. Isn't she the cutest thing? And I love that she has a dimple. You should name her…like your cows. I named the cupboard I vintagified (Lady Victoria)- that way it will be harder to sell her away one day. hahahaha!

  10. I always drool but had been lwanting a top hat for yonks and found one this week yayyyyyy.Loe your cute calender too.

  11. Love the calendar! Super cute!
I have been lusting for a industrial flat bed dolly for my living room. To use as a coffee table. Sigh

  12. This is awesome! I'm so fickle about things, that it's always difficult for me to narrow down exactly what I want, so I'm constantly browsing until I find it. Wish I could be like others who always know just what they want!

  13. I have a very similar brass calendar that belonged to my great grandparents. I do manage to change the date maybe 10 times a year. :@
Yesterday I found a vintage stuffed Airedale Terrier for my grand daughter's collection. It is SWEET! I don't come across these very often, so this one was a steal at $25!!!

  14. There are so many things that I drool over it's hard to pick just one! Probably my biggest want right now is a wonderful old house to restore… I know the right one is just out there waiting on me to find her, I just have to have patience… Love your perpetual calendar!

  15. Perfect! I know this feeling, right now it's ironstone. Very hard to find for a good price here in Florida. Yesterday I found a huge white Johnson Brothers bowl for $15.00. Right under my nose in my own shop!! It has a chip but that doesn't bother me at all.
It's the thrill of the hunt!
    Enjoy your day Marian.

  16. my "must have" for the longest time was one of those Swedish Grandfather clocks, don't ask me why…they just look proud and beautiful and I wanted one my home. I even have had a photo of one on my fridge for years, so many years I moved the PHOTO from one house to another house's refrigerator! Finally this summer, I found one, it is a replica but I adore it and now he lives in my home. patience is the key.

  17. I hadn't seen one of those particular kinds of calendars, but it's darling! It's much sweeter than the wooden block kind.

I owe my obsession to you and the cool things you make with the old grain sacks. Not that I have looked for them before this year, but I just don't recall ever seeing any in my ventures of thrift shopping. I know there's other things that I am lured into wanting as well, but the sacks are top on my list.

  18. I love the brass. Very pretty,it's like a piece of jewlery for your desk. I want to find a gold pocket watch. My father carried one.He passed away when I was 9. 🙁 And I wanted it but my Mom had to seel alot of things of his to get by.Always love reading your posts.Have a wonderful day.

  19. This is a crazy coincidence! JUST yesterday I was in an antiques store and there were three of these right on the checkout counter! Just like the grocery stores put candy bars there for kids, this dealer had these there as "candy" for the adults. So cute!

  20. Wow.. as you asked the question I realized that there is nothing of note that I am lusting after but am keeping a running list of items I am casually looking for to use for Ballard-style remakes that I am doing on my blog.. but one actual thing.. no.. and that is sort of odd!

    Maddie

  21. Uh yes…a dress form and grain sacks just like the ones you torture us with on the blog! I have been looking for both lately but no such luck….I will keep searching though! 😉 Maybe I will get lucky soon.

  22. I bought one a few months ago from ebay, and I have it sitting on a shelf in my living room set to the date my twins were born. Love it!

  23. So funny–I am looking at one of those perpetual calendars right now on my own desktop just below my Mac monitor. Was my grandmother's for eons. I keep it perpetually set to Christmas eve, this year on a Saturday…:)

  24. In this business it is fun to find things that you love, but you would probably never buy. Now, you can use them for what you want, and then when you are done with them have a place that you can sell them.

  25. Yes! A must have I've been lusting after is anything YOU make, especially a grain sack covered frenchy chair. Unfortunately I live in Houston and that's a long way from Luckett's. 🙁

  26. I'm looking for something really stupid, called "anti-overflowing-milk" or whatever it's called in English. It's a kind of Pyrex lid that you put in your pan before boiling milk… When it makes a clapping sound, you know the milk is beginning to boil and you don't forget it and burn it. It was very pouplar right after WWII in France. I don't know why but I have that feeling I really NEED one right now!

  27. The calendar is so cute, love the metal. I have one that belonged to my pops, but is stands much taller. I have been lusting over feed sacks and industral bins. I found several but am waiting for a deal, u know they will be gone when I go back!! Di@cottage-wishes.

  28. Rationalization, it's a beautiful thing!! I NEED a old fashioned glass garden cloche. .heavy one and at a decent price. I've seen replicas, but it's part of the fun to focus on something I really want and look and look and one day, it's just there!! The thrill of the search.

  29. My thing I "need" recently is furniture to fix. I go to a woodworking class with my kids once a week, and I bring in old but beautifully made furniture, and Mr. Bruce (the woodworker/teacher) shows me each thing that needs to be fixed and how to do it. I learn so much and end up with heirloom pieces of furniture. I'm currently learning how to carve missing pieces on a buffet/server with a marble top and how to clean the marble.

But, hmmmm, now I "need" to have something to remind me what the date is!
