Yay! I finally got the other part of my new bedding. A chocolate brown matelasse quilt and shams from Wal-Mart (ordered online.) This is where the title of my post comes in. I think it should be illegal to make bedding that is full SLASH queen. Is it a full size or queen size? Because there is a difference. Any couple who sleeps in a queen bed and then has to spend a night squished together in a full knows there is a size difference. It is my experience that a full/queen size normally means it’s a full size. You’ll have about a 2″ overhang on a queen bed, which just doesn’t cut it for me. So, when ordering this quilt, I took a chance and ordered a king. It was a good move and fits the bed perfectly. It is a gamble, though, because sometimes a queen bed in a king matelasse looks like a moo-moo on a girl with a nice figure. Not cute. Ok. I’m done. I’ve said my peace about that subject.
So, now I’ll show you my progress on the room. I’ve just wrapped fabric around my pillows, so it’s a little rough, but you’ll get the idea.
One thing I did was add this dark teal tole tray in the middle of my ironstone plates. I really needed some color above the bed and this compliments my fabrics and color scheme, without being too matchy-matchy.
You can see what a difference it makes.
I folded the white duvet at the end of the bed to add fluff and luxury. It also breaks up the brown. Now, unfortunately, it’s going to get packed away until it warms up a little. It would be a little too hot to sleep under a quilt and a duvet.
Here is a before piecture, so you can see where I’m coming from (and so I could participate in Met Monday! Talk about some beautiful bedrooms…whew, you must check it out!)
I’m very excited to share my newest project with you. I have loved and drooled over and pined after and stared longingly at antique European grain sacks for years. They are always out of my budget. Finally, I took matters into my own hands…
…and made some myself!
These were my tests that I worked on today and I am thrilled with how they turned out. So, you wanna know how I made them? In time, my pretties.
So, now that I have taunted you, I need your help. Which bed skirt should I go with? The white quilted skirt that matches the duvet? Or should I make a gathered skirt with the aqua toile fabric? And don’t lead me astray because you’re mad that I won’t tell you how to make the faux grain sacks…
Here’s another thing to keep in mind. I am considering making a half canopy over the bed. I think I would use the toile for that. The hesitation on that is the bed is right next to the one window in room and curtains next to a canopy might be a bit too much fabric all together. I would move the bed in front of the window and address the two together, but we have to put a window A/C unit in during the warmer months. Sigh…any thoughts?

i am okay with you holding out for now! but will not wait long ~ lol
i love both dust ruffles but i think my fav for now is the toile!
Toile all the way. It looks so pretty and I'm a sucker for toile. I have a built in leveler in my head (so my husband says) and the pretty tray is a little crooked. It slopes to the right. I have always been able to eyeball things like that and it drives me mad. When we built our house in Florida, the guy was putting in our cabinets and he put in the microwave oven and I told him it was crooked. He said that it wasn't and went and got the level. It was an 1/8 of an inch off. Do you know how much fun I am to live with? LOL
I like the toile. It goes nicely with the chocolate breadspread.
Love the DIY grain sack pillows, can't wait to see how you did them. Another vote for the toile skirt.
Great tip on the kind vs. full/queen battle. I've always used a king comforter on our queen sized bed, not only does it look better, but we fight over the covers less!
Have a great night!
Melissa
Definitely the toile, unless you make a canopy with it too, that would be a little much.
Definitely think the tray adds a bit of "oomph" and depth to the wall, and I would go with the toile bedskirt–I think it will pull everything together nicely. And I totally agree with you about the blanket/quilt/duvet size. I have a SUPER plush queen (like 17 inches) and I use king size for my bed, because it might be okay on one side, but the side closest to the bathroom always has like, 1/2 overhang. The king is definitely bigger, but I appreciate the fact that I can adjust the overhang to be even on both sides.
Toile for sure, and I say go with the canopy too, you can never have too much toile right?
I love the teal tray on the wall, the whole bed looks great!
Have you considered bringing some of the toile on to the bed, like a cute round bolster, or some big europeon shams behind the white? Just a thought!
I love your blog, and your style, thanks for sharing!
I'd skip the canopy and go stay with the white dust-ruffle. It has a Danish look to the room right now and I think it would conflict with a canopy, but I am NO EXPERT!
Also, I just got a King for my Queen and we sleep SO MUCH BETTER. And it's perfect. No more fights about who gets the covers 🙂
Toille- definitely.
full/queen! ugh! it is so hard to find a matlasse that is just a queen-dare i say, impossible!
as for the skirt, my vote is for the toile. i have no idea about the canopy/window treatment. that is way over my decorating ability. haha!
I'm a toile gal myself, but I can understand if you're doing a canopy too. Can never go wrong with matelasse either. Where in the world do you get all the ENERGY?!?!? 🙂
no doubt…go w/ the toile. It looks fabulous w/ the quilt. I think a couple throw pillows w/ the same toile mixed in would be nice too! I like the way the toile picks up the color in the tray above your bed.
I am also doing master bed stuff…you'll have to come check it out & give me your thoughts & ideas!
Shellagh
I know just what you mean about the bedspead issues… I have a king size bed, so its very difficult for me to get that little 'extra'. I wish companies would make a point to offer an oversized king! I would gladly pay a little extra!
I love the toile- so pretty and cozy- but keep the matching one for warmer months when you want to lighten up and have your room feel airy.
Can't wait to hear more regarding those grain sacks! 🙂
Love them both, but the toile is just dreamy. really pretty to coordinate with the other pieces! Can't wait to hear about the grain sacks!
Fine. I won't sulk about it, but it's just wrong you teasing us like that! : ) I would go with the toile on the bedskirt considering the other fabrics you will be bringing in.
One question ~ what do you mean by a "half" canopy? What about one of those {I call them} bed crowns, though they are not actually shaped in a crown. Like a half circle piece with a rod for curtains or fabric with a pocket over the bed.
toile is my vote, also. I love the tray and ironstone. Lezlee
I love the addition of the tray, it's beautiful, totally adds a punch of color.
And I'm adding yet another vote for the toile, it's so pretty, so so so pretty and I think it adds a major visual interest. It's so pretty I want it!
I love the toile too. It rounds out the look! The tray looks good on the wall too. Things are looking great! Love & blessings from NC!
Your bedroom is really starting to look very spiffy! I vote for the toile and maybe against the canape, but I am holding that last vote untill I get more visual information.
Oh and can I say you are a tease!
I'm not trying to be different here but I have to say I'd go with the white quilted bedskirt to match the duvet.
I love them both so why pick. I would try layering them with the toile farthest from the floor. Since they are both the same size, I have made a dust ruffle smaller by placing it where I want it and pleating it and then using clear packing tape to secure it in place. If you decide to layer them and I have not explained this well I can send a pic. Love the whole look. I have a mattelesse (sp?) on my bed and they wash up beautifully. I should know I have Three Dogs At Home.
The tray was the crowning touch, Love it. It all flows just perfectly, Hugs, Janna
Oh I so agree with the full/queen stuff, what is up with that? Drives me crazy too!
My vote is the toile fabric
same here with the bed sizes…i always go for the king, and hope that some day the mattress fairy will show up and replace my queen size with a king. (i buy king flat sheets too)
my vote is for the toile bed skirt.
keep it comin'
Toile from me too! And, I thought that the tole tray was just a tad crooked too – but I thought it was me or the pic?
I just bought a king size "kiss-pleat" comforter set for my queen size bed and love it – I'm a hard, rough sleeper and this works out great for me!
Can't wait to see the how to make those pillows –
The Toile. It is beautiful. I so agree with you on the full/queen thing. They aren't the same. We have a queen size bed and invariably whatever I buy in full/queen is not quite the right size!
xo
Claudia
toille…with a "small" matching pillow on the bed!
I agree with two comments posted already.
One: you could change the bedskirts seasonally, white for spring and summer, toile for fall and winter.
Two: Leaving the white on and making a shorter and fuller toile bedskirt with the matelasse bedskirt peeking out. I made a two tier one for a friend at her request and love it that way.
Thanks for the reminder about ordering online from WalMart. The linen section at the WalMart where I shop is always picked over.
For whatever its worth- I like the white bed skirt.
Laura
So beautiful! I love the combination of old world / rustic / sophisticated that you've created. It's really soothing and pretty.
Toile…no doubt. I love it….I also agree in adding a couple of the toile pillows on the bed…. You can never have too many pillows???? I would worry a bit about the canopy with the windows….You'll just have to play around with it to see for sure.
Love what you are doing so far! I like the bedskirt on the right actually.
Do you have enough room to put the bed on the side of the window and create a faux window on the other side of the bed also? You could make a valance out of a cornice board that runs along the top of everything with the valance. Use a solid fabric on the sides of the bed to cover the existing window and your faux. I don't know if I explaned that right or not. The plates would look lovely over the bed inbetween the two side panels of fabric. Just a thought.
First…I love the addition of the tray in with the white dishes..looks more grounded to me and very pretty.'
Toile…!!!!! If you need to keep your bed close to the windows, put plantation blinds up for a nice, crisp look that won't fight your other fabrics. You are so good at this sort of thing, I know it will be beautiful when you are finished.
I, too, have drooled over the vintage feedsacks..waaay too over my budget..so I am waiting to hear how you did these..they are STUNNING!!
xo bj
I really like the aqua toile bedskirt.
And the tray and plates above the bed are absolutely gorgeous!
Of course, anything involving grain sacks is okay in my book!
Anne
I like the white.
Do you know where wall reading lights came from? They would be perfect over my bed!
I'm a toile girl too! But I love the idea of layering them or changing with the seasons. Canopy would be a bit much and I think you're right about competing with the curtains.
Love the pillows!

I love the pillow and yes I am anxious to hear just how you mad it. You've got me stumped.
Really, I like both of your choices for the bedskirt. It's a toss up really but I think I'd go with the toile, especially since you may make a canopy to match it. I have always wanted a canopy over our bed, but we have to large long windows in our bedroom, so I've been confused on how I could make it work. If you do the canopy I will be anxious to see just how you placed it in front of your window.

I just LOVE what you have done so far! I personally vote for the white bed shirt. With that being said, what other furniture pieces, accessories and window treatments will you be using? Don't laugh at me, but have you asked your husband if he has a perference because it's a room that's shared by the both of you. I'm planning a master bedroom re-do and my husband has given me some feedback….it doesn't mean I'm going to listen but I do like to hear what he thinks.
Have a wonderful Sunday.
I think either one would look good, I personally think the plain one is the best. If you chose to change accessories or colors I think it wouldn't get too busy. Good luck on your choice.
There's no such thing as too much toile. Go for both or another print/stripe on the skirt with the toile canopy. I've been working on the grain sack idea myself, lookiing forward to yours.
Janet
The toile! The pattern makes the eye roam around the room…I love a roaming eye around a room! Kind of like being in an art gallery – you don't want to miss a thing!!!
I love the bed! Can't wait for the instructions on the pillow covers!!
I personally like the white bedskirt. For the person that asked about the lights over the bed – we purchased those for Marian at Home Depot. They were very reasonable – but I don't think they have them any more :(. The last time we tried to purchase some for her guestroom they no longer carried them. We had seen some similar on a cruise ship and loved them and started looking for something like that. We were ready to buy close to the same thing at a fancy lamp shop when I just could not do it – they were too expensive. Then one day in Home Depot we ran across these and I have them in almost every bedroom and love them. They have a rheostat on them so you can dim them real low if your spouse is trying to sleep. You can check Home Depot as they may have something similar to replace these. Also IKEA has a light that works but has a bit different look.

I'm with the majority, I like the toile. It will give your room an element of surprise!(can't believe I said that designer thing)
I love the tray and plates on the wall, looks fabulous!!
The bedding so beautiful, I love it
all.
Thanks for coming to visit me, I just love it when you do.
hugs~~Sissie
The toile, I love everything, except I'm just not understanding the lights. Of course pictures don't always tell the true story, seeing them in person would be so different.
Mah, The lights are reading lights. They are a functional choice, not a decor choice! 🙂 What's really nice is they are on a dimmer, so one person can read and the other can sleep. Hope that clears it up!
Love this look, it is SO pretty! So crisp and classic. I think I love the toile bedskirt.
I have to vote for the toile bedskirt. I kept going back and forth between the picture of your bed and the two pictured bed skirts and I think the toile would add some color and detail.
But right now I am probably the last one to ask…I'm in the middle of my guest room redo and I have been back and forth to Bed, Bath and Beyond more times that I care to count! Decisions, decisions.
Jane
I am loving this room!! Looks FAB! I would vote for the toile bedskirt!! LOVE IT!

I like where you're going with this and I'm intrigued by the sack pillows!! I've had similar ideas brewing about those el cheapo flour sack towels at Walmart.
By the way, I see a lot of Delft in your kitchen. Are you Dutch?? If so, we've got another thing in common!
I have always had a king on my queen.. wow that really came out wrong….
I love the look of the toile. The white just seems so stark. Not sure if that's just the color monitor on my computer….. I just love toile though. Ya, toile would be my vote.
Btw, thanks for the tip on the full/queen. I've always wondered about that. I usually avoid covers like that.
I also wanted to say thank you for being such a giving person. I am learning sooo much from you!
I like the toile! And I have always gotten a king for my queen bed because I like the look of it hanging over the sides a foot and a half or so (plus my bed doesn't have a dust ruffle =) maybe someday…)! Also, you could do something like I did for a half canopy and then it's not too much fabric, but adds the elegance!: http://sweetwillowcottage.blogspot.com/2009/11/my-cherry-wood-boudoir.html
Love the toile and the gorgeous tray and ironstone. Your bed is gorgeous. Hugs, Marty
Hi, I have discovered the same thing, if it is marked full/queen it is going to be too small. I love the toile I think it balances the dark brown nicely. The white does not have the softness the bed needs. Love the platters and plates nice touch. Kathysue
I just started a new blog would love for you to visit
well, thanks for the info on the reading lamps. I figured they were discontinued, but it never hurts to ask.
Amanda
I like the toile bed skirt. Also, I would not be afraid to make the canopy for the top out of the toile with a lining. Really dress it up. I've come to realize that the more I am willing to fill a room abundantly the better it looks. It's coming together quite nicely. I love the plates! Thanks for sharing.
What a gorgeous outcome! I love how light and fresh everything looks. The chocolate bedding really grounds the works and absolutely pops against the white. Nice!
Bedskirt.. tough call. I think either or. The toile gives some nice patterned interest to an otherwise completely solid but very clean colourblocked look.
I'd personally stuff a sidefull of toile, then walk out of the room and come back in later. I always have my answer after a reset.
I didn't help at all, did I? 🙂
