bObi robotic vacuum review & giveaway

When someone sends you an e-mail asking if you would like to try out their robotic mop and vacuum, you say yes.  You just do.  Because it’s a robotic vacuum AND mop!

Before I had the studio and I worked from home, I felt like I was able to keep the house cleaner, except when we were in the “fuzzy-floor-days” of Lucketts prep.  The studio has relieved my house of the duties of being a photo studio, storage facility, and headquarters of Mustard Seed Interiors, but it’s also meant that I’m not here during the day to do some spot cleaning when the house needs it.

I’ve had to schedule my cleaning for evenings and weekends, just like I did when I worked in the corporate world.  Just like most of you do, I’m sure!  It’s been an adjustment and Jeff and I have been working together to find ways to be more efficient with our “chores”, allowing us to have our weekends free for R & R.  (Well, as much as possible with me running a business and Jeff working towards his masters degree!)

So, bObi Pet, the robotic vacuum and mop arrived at my door earlier this week.

I must admit, being brand-spanking-new to the world of robotic vacuums, I was a little intimidated by all of the contents of the box, but once I got it out and started reading the instruction manual, I felt at ease.

It wasn’t overly complicated to set up and get bObi cleaning.  It’s sort of like an iPhone.  You can get it up and running in just a few minutes, but there is a lot of technology you can utilize to get the most out of your new gadget.

As I was setting it up, I noticed there is a weekly maintenance checklist right on the bottom, which I liked, so I know what to do without fishing for the manual.

The bObi is a disk-shape with a mirrored top, so it’s sleek and simple.  The low profile allows her (she’s a girl, according to the manual) to get under furniture and the toe-kicks on kitchen cabinets.

She has three settings – “Go!”, “Juice” and “Waffle”.  “Go!” tells bObi to get to work; to start vacuuming and mopping.  “Juice” tells her to go back to her charging station.  She’ll do this automatically if her battery is running low.  “Waffle” is for messes in a concentrated area.  She’ll vacuum and/or mop in a grid or waffle pattern until the area is clean.

I put bObi to work in my kitchen, since I’m always at war with the white floor.  I did move the stool, just so she could get in the corner.

I left the jute rug under the sink in place, though.  We don’t have wall-to-wall carpet anywhere in our house, so I need a vacuum that can go from hard surface flooring to rugs without getting snagged.  She made the transitions well and, if she ever got “stuck” or ran into a wall, she was able to right herself and keep going.

I let bObi take care of the floors while I was picking up, washing dishes, cleaning off the counters, and finally working on my e-mail.

bObi does come with a “blOck”, so you can set an invisible boundary for her.  See that little black box in the doorway?  That’s the “blOck” to keep her from going out of the kitchen/family room area.

I was actually laughing in amazement as I watched bObi work, so I decided to take a quick video to really show her in action.

I’m just putting my toe in the world of robotic vacuuming, so there’s still a lot I need to learn about it and I’ll have to give an update in a few months.  Here are my initial thoughts…

  • From what I’ve observed so far, it does a really good job!  The little brush sweeps things into it’s path that might be out of reach, like debris that’s under the stove or fridge.
  • It is gentle when it bumps into large furniture, so I wouldn’t be concerned about it damaging the legs on my antiques.

  • It will scoot lightweight furniture, like barstools, on hard-surfaced floors, so just be mindful of that.
  • Marshall, my nine year old, declared, “Mommy won’t have to vacuum ever again!”  I don’t think it’s the end of vacuuming altogether, since there are nooks and crannies that it won’t be able to reach (not to mention the tops of baseboards, etc), but it seems to be able to get most of the floor and will really help with keeping fuzz, fluff, dust and dirt under control between cleanings.
  • It makes a light whirring sound, like a small hand-held vacuum, but I didn’t find it disruptive.
  • My boys think she looks like a little robot from Star Wars.  They could hardly wait to get home to “watch the vacuum”. (And there have been actual fights over who gets to drive bObi.)

Who I think bObi is best for…

  • For people with busy work schedules.  You can set a cleaning schedule on her remote control, so she can vacuum while you’re at work.
  • For someone who has physical limitations that makes vacuuming a challenge.
  • For a household with issues with dust and pet hair that make vacuuming almost a daily requirement.  (The suction was upgraded in this model to work on pet hair specifically.)
  • Families who want to get the kids more involved with cleaning and make it fun.  I originally didn’t have this point, but then my nine-year-old vacuumed and mopped our kitchen and family room FOR FUN, supervising bObi as she worked.
  • For people who really dislike cleaning and want to automate as much of it as possible!

Now, someone needs to invent a robotic laundry-folder and toilet-cleaner.

Not in one.

Two separate robots.  Definitely.

  1. Oh goodness I need this! We both work full time, my husband sometimes up to 65 hours a week. And he’s a logger so he comes home dirty, and even if he takes his boots off outside, there’s still mud somewhere on him that gets tracked in. Add two large dogs and three stories to clean… well, not all of the floors get done at once. Usually in stages or not at all. This would be a dream! I’d set it up for the kitchen and entry tile so it would get the most high-traffic area. It would be awesome to come home to clean floors!

  7. WOW is all I can say about this! I would love to have this for me, but more so for my mother. She has all dark hardwood floors in her home, but her arthritis has gotten so bad it won’t be long before she can’t do it herself AND then I will have hers and mine to clean! This would be a Godsend!!! She would be leary of the technology, but once she could see it pick up the dirt — she would be sold too!

  8. I personally do NOT recommend Bobbi robotic vacuums. I got one in January and by mid February it no longer worked. It would turn on but would not actually run or vacuum. If I were giving advice to someone, it would be to save your money and just buy a roomba. More money, but better quality. I do have to say Bobbi’s customer service was nice enough to let me return their defective product. I am still awaiting my refund.

  223. That is so awesome! I’ve never used a robot vacuum before, either. As soon as I started reading this I thought my older two (9 and 5) would totally fight over who gets to clean with her. I think it could definitely make cleaning fun for the kids, even though they are pretty good with helping, anyway. Kids just love remote controlled anything. I received a Roomba for Christmas but we have 2 dogs, one Golden Retriever who sheds constantly, and poor Roomba just can’t keep up with the dog hair tumbleweeds so one that has been upgraded to deal with pet hair would be a life saver. Also, mine doesn’t have the built in mop feature, which I would love. 🙂

  348. I have wondered about these, we have eight children, sometimes after a meal the crumb pile we sweep up looks like it could end world hunger. Would you say it is good for daily messes like that or more for dust and traffic dirt? How much can it hold? It is hard to tell how big it is and how often you would have to empty it.

  441. I’ve got me an iRobot a couple of years ago and I’m still in love with it! Not the iRobot brand per say, but the whole concept of someone taking care of your floor for you while you are at work 🙂 Another thing that amuses me is how smart it is figuring out the room shape and all obstructions and getting its path. It is so smart it has a name like a pet and some times I talk to it like “no, you’ve been in this corner already, go to that area behind the sofa!”

  1108. This Army wife needs one for the dark “wood” floors in her quarters that show EVERY bit of dog fur, dog drool, crumbs, lint, etc. I could/should pass the vacuum every day, BUT. . .

  1118. What an amazing little product! The weekly maintenance would concern me, mostly because I’m terrible at remembering that type of thing. I think it’s worth the suffering of maintenance for a vacuum that operates itself though 🙂

    However, could you please advise me about the automatic recharging capability of this robotic equipment. Is it capable of going to the charging base independently?
